lol @IchliebeKanada! the only exciting part of the whole Vancouver opening ceremony is the opening pageantry with the Eskimos up until Sarah Mclachlan came out and the tap dancing. everything else was flat and void of emotion.
You have to remember that with an opening ceremony for the Olympics, you are entertaining the world, not just yourselves. Sydney more than completed that, and Athens & Beijing did a very good job of doing that as well. As an American, I admit that Atlanta failed at that.
Hey to everyone reading this, the reliving of the games over the last week has made me wish that a television network in Australia would replay and let us relive the entire Sydney 2000 Olympic games. If anybody is interested send me a message and we’ll see if we can get a petition going. OneHD seems the perfect way!

@Bluesage2009 definitely these game were the most entertaining to watch. although beijing with its technology and the simplicity, yet still technology filled Athens were amazing, it just lacked a great amount of joy from both the audience and performers.
The best Olympics I ever saw, and the most impactful on my character. Had I known that event would be so great, I would have trained all my youth for a shot. Most people shrugged this event off. @3Tommyx3 1988, 1980, 2000, 1992, 2004 and 1996... these are the best summer olympics opening ceremony... the winter olympics are kinda boring... maybe because i live in a tropical country...

Cool. Australia used to compete in our fireworks contests at the Stockholm Water Festival. They literally blew the competition away year after year. Nobody can match entertainment like Australia.
Entertainment at it's best. Even almost 9 years later it's not outdated. I reckon there are no singular best anything. Things should be considered 'one of the best'. This is 'one of the best' Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Barcelona was amazing too & the Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony at Torino in Italy. Because I'm an Aussie my favourite is Sydney but everyone who hasn't should check out the clips on YouTube for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Rocket man was absolutely incredible. Athens sucked.
The last three Olympic Opening Ceremonies were all very special and magical in different ways. Sydney's was definitely the funniest of the three. Only the Aussies could have come up with this great sense of joy and openness! I love it!
Believe me the audience was speechless watcing the Athens opening ceremony; Just watch the allegory part! So simple, so deep and magical though...The music was fantastic. Just watch the lighting of the caudron! It was not a greek show, it was a masterpiece of human intellectualism! It surprises me that many of u didn't watch the Athens 2004 Olympics. Five years later it still remains the Best Games Ever! By the way Atlanta's Games were a shame for the olympic movement...
i did see the whole thing. and it was great, but it just left me empty. as did the beijing games. imo they both tried so hard to show off their culture, that they maybe should have focused more on entertainment rather than making sure that we understand their culture. which is y i love the sydney games and in my books the best ever. every1 had a good time! audience, performers, it was just amazing from start to finish. however athens closing ceremony probably the best
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Sydney Olympics were very good, not the best Games, for God's sake! Despite the groundless propaganda Greeks managed to create the BEST OLYMPICS EVER; artistic, in human scale, dream! Just watch the opening ceremony on youtube. Atlanta good Games? You guys coprehend things differently. Beijing were really excellent Olympics.
yea i watched the atlanta games after i saw this and it was NOT how i remembered it. The cheerleading scene was a bit corny imo. but I still don't think Athens was the best because while it may have been great on TV, i bet the audience didn't enjoy some of the parts much. Like in the parade, if you didn't pick the right place to sit, then you didn't see the whole parade segment. That parade did NOT circle the whole arena. Sydney was both good artistically and for the audience live and TV.
omg u r so lucky 2 b able 2 capture some amazing footage of this! plz someone let me kno was there ever an official video released of the opening/closing sydney ceremonies? if so let me kno where i can buy it!
and even tho beijing was technologically amazing, definitely Sydney best opening ceremony! so beautiful and breathtaking! then comes Atlanta very close 2nd! if Greece had not started late on planning they would probably take 1 of those spots but it was so rushed!
I was one of the wattles (Yellow flower dudes) in the fauna section. I had to carry a long pole with yellow laterns hanging off it and use it to lift the flower up in the end. That's my claim to fame :) Awesome fun though! One to tell the grandkids.
Wow good for you! I remember watching this. How proud you must have felt to have taken part!
For all the arguers on here I have but one thing to say : the interesting thing to see is that the Sydney Olympics was probably the last one where the organisers of the ceremony cared more about the audience in the stadium than they did about the TV audience. The Beijing OC was spectacular, but it was pretty obvious that if you were in the stadium you had a worse exp than people watching on tv.
314noceu I completely agree with you. Don't the "fake" footprint firework "walking" from the old part of Beijing to the new part. This was done by NBC on behalf of the Communist Govt of China. Why?
I loved the Sydney ceremonies - they had so much personality and were seemed like such fun. Whilst the Beijing ones were truly amazing it all seemed a little bit too precise and took away a bit of the atmosphere for me!
Guys stop having stupid little arguments on here, there's no point.
Each olympics was spectacular in its own sense and originality. And you gotta remember every olympic opening and closing ceremony is always trying to outdo the one before it.
You cant really say which one was the best, because everyone will have a different opinion and favorite, if sydney was the best to you, then let it be the best, if you liked athens better then thats what appealed to you.
Barcelona Games were artistic! Sydney Games were fantastic! Athens Games were dream Games! Beijing Games were spectacular! Every Olympiad is unique! That's the beauty of each Olympiad; the uniqueness in its diversity! Whether an Olympiad has been the best or not is something subjective. I strongly believe that Athens 2004 had been the best Games ever. Greece "rebaptised" the Olympic Games, giving them its true meaning; peace and friendship through fair competition...
agree with you...i enjoyed the beijing games i thought they were exceptional....i am just stating what the official said....i dont think sydeny was all that fantastic
readerliz.........beijing olympics hav no chance in front of sydney olympics cos the ceremony is supposed to show the culture, the history and the geographical beauty not the dumb display of lights!!!! and talking about the jelly fish and the video above.....well it was representing the GREAT BARRIER REEF of australia one of the wonders of the world! and idont think that any reef is supposed to be organized and symmetrical!!! the fake olympics2008 have no chance infront of the sydney olympics
for those people who think that sydney opening ceremony was dull and boring might want to know that the opening and closing ceremony of the 2000 olympics were far more better than any other olympics in history! mr. panadem u are probably greek thats why ur taking athens side! but i assure u that i am not an aussie and yet i believe that the sydney olympics were the best games ever! and will always be!
Whether you like it or not Athens opening ceremony was by far the best! Sydney did not differ from the typical Atlantas's opening, except for the lighting, that was truly amazing! Beijing, was spectacular, indeed. Barcelona was artistic, awesome. But Athens was authentic, "unforgetable, dream", poetic, the way it should be...
like the jellyfish!!. but it all seems rather messy and disorganized.. does not have any of the immaculate precision of Beijing ceremony.. all a bit haphazard.. yes.. maybe 'best games ever Sydney.'.. but sorry have to say.. Beijing one still better.. I think it will always be the best one.. most 'jaw dropping' effect one.. at least ..my jaw dropped anyway..
The Orchestra might have faked it but I was part of the 2000 person marching band in that opening ceremonies and i assure you we were NOT pre-recorded....
"Melbourne Symphony Orchestra managing director Trevor Green confirmed on Friday that the 2000 opening ceremony performance had been prerecorded by both the Sydney and Melbourne orchestras, saying that steps must be taken to ensure mistakes aren't made live during high-profile events."
Australia faked it, China faked it, Your girlfriend faked it, this world is nothing but a fake reality...make your own...but never ever fake it...
When has entertainment ever been authentic? I'm surprised at the number of people who cry foul the second they spot a "faked" moment. Seriously, people all need to lighten up and just enjoy the show for what it is: a SHOW.
laluneblanc are you quite an ignorant person then? Not very culturally educated? Just generally brainless and stupid? Why not open a book and learn something about the world rather than having to be spoonfed every last bit of information you fucking waster.
The Beijing games were certainly very impressive, but you need to remember that other countries have budgets, democratic governments that have to answer to the people, and opposition parties that are waiting to pounce on every budget overrun. Beijing was very different, BOCOG could spend as much as they needed. Figures are somewhat unreliable however Sydney cost ~ US$6 billion, Athens ~ US$12 billion, and Beijing ~ US$44 Billion (unadjusted figures). I think Sydney was pretty good, considering.

o yer beijing is so cool the way they fake the girl singing and fake their athletes ages. and copy australia with the little girl totaly original.....
Yeah, Sydney is definitely better than Athens or Beijing, which I found too artistic. I appreciate something fun and no-brain-needed festival like this, because I hate culture, art and history! They should've made more depthless ceremonies like for brainless people like me.
What's the most important elements for Olympic opening ceremony? To me, it has to be easy, simple, fun, so that someone doesn't have to be cultured or educated to understand.
Well done, but when outgoing IOC Chairman Mr.Samaranch declared the Sydney 2000 Olympics as the best ever, he meant they were best ever of the Olympics that ... HE WAS IN CHARGE OF. And we all know that his comment was interpreted differently and blown way out of proportion.
Then, Greece WELCOMED HOME THE OLYMPICS and Athens 2004 inspired and set the bar high having truly become the epitome of the Olympic Games being that they were the "Unforgettable, Dream Games"!!!
lol, the chinese's synchronization is unparalleled... I can't really seem to find another country that has such a good sync with each and every movement... so tech's not really THAT important
check the exact news or statement, the Chairman of IOC said "being the best" can not simply describe the beijing 2008, so he used "exceptional" which he said means nothing can be compared with...sorry for that, but your opening ceremony is fake and inferior indeed
I saw the Sydney one 8 years ago..thing is.. I can't remember a SINGLE ONE THING about it. so why it qualifies as 'best games ever' I really dont' know why..
Beijing may/may not be 'best games ever' but superb clockwise organization and ceremonies spectacularly impressive and memorable.. definitely yes! better to be most memorable games than totally forgettable!!!! which I'm afraid Sydney games is/was...
i agree with you...i enjoyed the beijing games i thought they were exceptional....i am just stating what the official said....i dont think sydeny was all that fantastic
i'm sure some country will. i mean all they have to do is have legit singers...not a girl pretending to sing because the real singer is not pretty. china is so mean.
its funny you brought that up, if you check, the Sydney Symphony performed there was sync to tape of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. They did basically the same thing.
Honestly, in my personal opinion, i didn't like this. No offense. I didn't like Beijing Opening Ceremony either but i liked how they lighted the torch.
The Aussies put on such a pretty show! I'm sure this must have looked nice up close. This isn't my favorite ceremony, but it definitely has an element of fun that some of the others don't have. I hope we have that element when we get the Olympics next.
did you heard the news.... most of the fireworks in beijing olympics were pre-recorded and others are just computer generated, one of this is the foot prints.. and yes, beijing admits it, and the other one china fails to fill all the sits in bird's nest stadium, they even let the by-stander to fill the empty chair
WESTERN MEDIA BRAINWASHES AND DECEIVES PEOPLE MORE THAN I THOUGHT!! I was WRONG to think that democratic media was much different to communist media.
LESS THAN 1 MINUTE video of the footprint fireworks approaching the stadium was "computerised" because IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE TO FILM IT LIVE!! they actually did have those fireworks!! the rest of the fireworks were real too!
dont be so IGNORANT to believe EVERYTHING THE MEDIA EXAGGERATES! have your own mind!
This is what I hate about being an Aussie, seriously. Like we're a nice people, but if you have a personality where you love your country but you're ki

I love it!
TheNYFlame 2 years ago
Believe me the audience was speechless watcing the Athens opening ceremony; Just watch the allegory part! So simple, so deep and magical though...The music was fantastic. Just watch the lighting of the caudron! It was not a greek show, it was a masterpiece of human intellectualism! It surprises me that many of u didn't watch the Athens 2004 Olympics. Five years later it still remains the Best Games Ever! By the way Atlanta's Games were a shame for the olympic movement...
panadem 2 years ago
i did see the whole thing. and it was great, but it just left me empty. as did the beijing games. imo they both tried so hard to show off their culture, that they maybe should have focused more on entertainment rather than making sure that we understand their culture. which is y i love the sydney games and in my books the best ever. every1 had a good time! audience, performers, it was just amazing from start to finish. however athens closing ceremony probably the best

Beijing were really excellent Olympics.
panadem 2 years ago
yea i watched the atlanta games after i saw this and it was NOT how i remembered it. Sydney was both good artistically and for the audience live and TV.
latininxtc 2 years ago
omg u r so lucky 2 b able 2 capture some amazing footage of this! plz someone let me kno was there ever an official video released of the opening/closing sydney ceremonies? if so let me kno where i can buy it!
and even tho beijing was technologically amazing, definitely Sydney best opening ceremony! so beautiful and breathtaking! then comes Atlanta very close 2nd! if Greece had not started late on planning they would probably take 1 of those spots but it was so rushed!

Why?

Guys stop having stupid little arguments on here, there's no point.
Each olympics was spectacular in its own sense and originality. And you gotta remember every olympic opening and closing ceremony is always trying to outdo the one before it.
You cant really say which one was the best, because everyone will have a different opinion and favorite, if sydney was the best to you, then let it be the best, if you liked athens better then thats what appealed to you.
Don't force other people to agree

Barcelona Games were artistic! Sydney Games were fantastic! Athens Games were dream Games! Beijing Games were spectacular! Every Olympiad is unique! That's the beauty of each Olympiad; the uniqueness in its diversity! Whether an Olympiad has been the best or not is something subjective. I strongly believe that Athens 2004 had been the best Games ever. Greece "rebaptised" the Olympic Games, giving them its true meaning; peace and friendship through fair competition...

asif2170 3 years ago
for those people who think that sydney opening ceremony was dull and boring might want to know that the opening and closing ceremony of the 2000 olympics were far more better than any other olympics in history! mr. panadem u are probably greek thats why ur taking athens side! but i assure u that i am not an aussie and yet i believe that the sydney olympics were the best games ever! and will always be!
asif2170 3 years ago

When has entertainment ever been authentic? I'm surprised at the number of people who cry foul the second they spot a "faked" moment. Seriously, people all need to lighten up and just enjoy the show for what it is: a SHOW.

To me, it has to be easy, simple, fun, so that someone doesn't have to be cultured or educated to understand.
laluneblanc 3 years ago
Well done, but when outgoing IOC Chairman Mr.Samaranch declared the Sydney 2000 Olympics as the best ever, he meant they were best ever of the Olympics that ... HE WAS IN CHARGE OF. And we all know that his comment was interpreted differently and blown way out of proportion.
Then, Greece WELCOMED HOME THE OLYMPICS and Athens 2004 inspired and set the bar high having truly become the epitome of the Olympic Games being that they were the "Unforgettable, Dream Games"!!!

Sydney 2000 is still considered the best Olympics ever apparently..Beijing was exceptional but wasnt stated as being the best.
Hipac01 3 years ago
check the exact news or statement, the Chairman of IOC said "being the best" can not simply describe the beijing 2008, so he used "exceptional" which he said means nothing can be compared with...sorry for that, but your opening ceremony is fake and inferior indeed
weststaras 3 years ago 2
Hipac01
DEFINITION of 'exceptional'.. =
"OUTSTANDING .. LIKE NO OTHER"..
I saw the Sydney one 8 years ago..thing is.. I can't remember a SINGLE ONE THING about it. so why it qualifies as 'best games ever' I really dont' know why..
Beijing may/may not be 'best games ever' but superb clockwise organization and ceremonies spectacularly impressive and memorable.. definitely yes! better to be most memorable games than totally forgettable!!!! which I'm afraid Sydney games is/was...

senoirb211 3 years ago
WESTERN MEDIA BRAINWASHES AND DECEIVES PEOPLE MORE THAN I THOUGHT!! I was WRONG to think that democratic media was much different to communist media.
LESS THAN 1 MINUTE video of the footprint fireworks approaching the stadium was "computerised" because IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE TO FILM IT LIVE!! they actually did have those fireworks!! the rest of the fireworks were real too!
