Nice people, you have Carl Sagan trying to talk peace and equality and you fucking idiots want to argue about religion and atheism. Creation and evolution. Why don't you all just accept each other or just the fuck up and get over it. Do you think this is what he wanted?
I'm sad to say in my debate team at the highschool I attend, we have the topic of the Advancing of Space Programs. Only 3 people agree to advance while the rest laugh at SETI, NASA, the ideas to expand the human race outwards into space. They call it a waste of money and time.
These are the people soon to be the future voters, citizens, and possibly leaders of our world's nations. I wish they could understand the words of Sagan, and realize the ignorance of their words.
I am not caucasian. I am not floridian. I am not American. I am a human of the planet earth. If people started thinking this way, things would be different.
@TrollingIsGay Why? What's wrong with being proud of your local nation or community or even ethnicity (as long as you don't look down upon other nations, communities and ethnicities, of course)? What's holding you back from being proud to be an American or a Floridian? I'm Jewish and I'm proud of my nation's acheivments over the past 3-or-so millenia, and I'm also very proud of humanity as a whole. One can't always think on a 7-billion-person scale, we're more than just humans.
@niceguy1068 There is nothing wrong with being proud of your ethnicity or country. After all, its what makes us unique. But if one day, we could put all our differences beside and just work together to end world problems such as hunger, AIDS, war, etc, We could advance as a species. We could live up to our fullest potential.
@TrollingIsGay lol patriotism is given a lot of weight in politics - imagine a politician saying "well we are not _____ we are human" - that would be interesting
Is there anyone in the world that says that this is boring or stupid. Who are those people that start a war who are those people that say kill the Jewish, hate the black or white or the one's who denies science and says that god has invented everything
@DZMOST It's like convection. The intellect is repressed at first but soon because of their intellect, it rises to the top, and the herd which once mocked it follows behind them in their wisdom. Then comes the dominance of the intellect. It becomes the status quo until time passes and it's ego again fades to the bottom of the convection. However as he falls, a new intellect rises from the bottom. The remaining herd at the top now represent closemindedness as they too fall. Its a cycle of change
People that don't like education don't really know what a vast and awesome experience they're loosing. It's something that people should thrive for instead of flout, it's truly the most epic matter in life.
Sagan so eloquantly exposes reality for what it is, both wonderful and to be feared, for we do now have the ability to wipe ourselves from future history. Through his words your mind opens up to the vast possibilities that the natural world and the cosmos are filled with.
I'm 14 years old as of yesterday. My grand-dad showing me this was probably the best gift I could've ever asked for. Because now, I know what I want to do in my life. I want to help, inspire, enlighten, and expand humanity in every way I can. As much as i can, i will try to expand my own view, while acheiving credentials through education, and without intolerance and ignorance, I now know that I want in life. I would like to give thanks for the opportunity to love humanity so early in life.
@Thornleyfan4ever I'm 14 as well, and I've got to say, this has completely changed not only my perspective on my life, but my perspective on our species as a whole. I hope that everyone will embrace the opportunity to do what you would want to do. I only hope that everyone realizes what could be out there, and how petty many conflicts are sweeping the world. If our species could unite, imagine the possibilities.
@onelowerlight All religions are incompatible with science unless the religion ignores part of itself. If you believe what the bible says is true, you are not being scientific.
@dabomb1357 I'm sorry you believe that. There are many ways to read the bible, and many other scriptures besides the bible that are not necessarily incompatible. Both religion and science grow out of the human experience, and I personally believe that the best path to truth is to focus on the ways in which religion and science intersect and support each other, not to obsess over the issues where they appear, for the moment at least, to be in irreconcilable conflict.

Hey everyone :) I made a video about government spending and how they should invest more money into space exploration, I'd appreciate it if you could check it out, thank you
If anything could inspire us as a species to stop our pointless aggression towards each other it would most definitely be space. As we begin to see this unfold we will undoubtedly unite and begin our expansion into the cosmos. We will shed our old hatreds and beliefs and adopt newer more progressive ones. We will as a species finally conquer our limitations.
I don't think that people 30-40 years ago went to bed, invariably thinking "the world seems kinda broken." Somehow, it is not a huge societal issue, though.
I love that videos of Lady Gaga get 20 million hits and videos of great minds like Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking get a mere 100,000. Goes to show you just where peoples heads are.
I would like to state now that as a 17 year old; I understand the problems facing this world. I firmly believe that ignorance is the worlds greatest threat. I believe I must defend my generation. We do not all run around chanting Biebers name and succumbing to corporate rule. I am not some hippie politics graduate either, I am a normal kid. We are not all ignorant. A lot of us care for more than booze and women.
@WestJetOwner I have thought about this myself. I will die one day, I will have my century. The earth has its billions of years. No matter how much money I get I will die, no matter the comforts I gain in life I am insignificant. A bunch of atoms, working together in an incredibly complicated system. But if I could make a difference, help to advance the human race with the time I have, then I have an impact. I am not brilliant at physics. I have a great talent for Geography. I can help change.
I don't think our generation is any dumber than generations before because that argument has been made since ancient Greece. There has always been an educated minority, and an ignorant majority. However, what separates our society from those before us, is that our people are voluntarily ignorant. That is the sad truth: when the opportunity to become educated is handed to us, many choose to decline.
@speddsk8rocker You are one of little, I am also 17 & looking at the world, I see the world going back to what seems like religious and political polarity, something unseen in years if not ever. This polarity is splitting humans farther than we thought possible. This is even scarier considering how easy it now is to communicate. This must be addressed, we must realize that we are humans not monsters. The future might be scariest thing that faces us, it is why we most embrace it and long for it!
the problem is that as humans we fear what we do not know, this causes war, and desperation. greed among other things as well skew the perception of value, we are caught up in a blinded society based on war, and stereo types. open your eyes, do not trust what the government says or what the bible says, because those things mask you, brothers and sisters we are all the same, the same blood runs through our veins, through peace, love, and equality we will strive towards the stars.
You no what all these comments by atheists and ultra religious nuts tell me? That you guys are unsure about your own beliefs, thus finding a need to go out of your way to offend others. Most of the world has freedom of religion, so SHUT THE FUCK UP AND BELIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE. Enjoy the damn video instead of wasting your time on trying to shove your beliefs (or the lack of thereof) down other peoples throats, on Youtube of all places.
@ciaranoc i feel like this comment is somewhat out of place on a video that emphasizes science and nature and discourages religion (the reference to the soul i mean)
@ciaranoc but surely if thats true then there is no point in saying it cos the ppl who are moved will know that if u are not then u have no soul and the people with no soul will not give a shit
@ciaranoc I am deeply moved by all seven of the sagan-series videos....and I don't have a soul. But no worries, neither do you. The more I learn about the way the universe works, the more alive I become....and discarding the myth of the soul has been part of the process. ;)
@b14blah absolutism isn't a good path to take, be it science or religion. with the way you're phrasing it, i feel it's important to point out that you're reeeeallly making science sound like a cult. in my own opinion, having a soul means having every little bit of wonder and curiosity and humbleness that sagan's talked about. for me, it's the part of us that reaches for the stars in the first place.
@Vinco No I'm not making science sound like a cult. Science is a process....a self-correcting one. Religion is not self-correcting. Every time that religion "corrects" or admits that it is wrong about a subject, it is due to the enormous pressure put onto it by empirical facts....by science.
@Vinco Cont'd: Don't play word games with me either. When you play the semantics game, you can make the word "soul" mean whatever you like. Why use a word that is so tangled up with religious nonsense when you can simply say that you are filled with wonder and curiosity? By your standards, I can say that having a soul means not believing in anything supernatural and completely rejecting all religious concepts....and you would have no argument against my claim.
@Vinco Cont'd: Just to be clear, I am open-minded. If the process of science one day shows that we have something that we might could call a soul, then I would be the first in line to examine the evidence. But as a man once said (and Sagan himself quoted him in his book 'The Demon-Haunted World') "It is important to have an open mind...but not so open that your brain falls out".
It is absolutely brilliant that humankind's collected wisdom is all on youtube. No more excuses for not learning stuff, as the best and brightest of our spiritual teachers, scientists, astronomers, intellectuals, and thinkers are posting all their present and past talks on youtube. One can fasttrack a university education by spending time with the greatest thinkers and artists of our time on youtube. It's amazing. I'd recommend Tedtalks/Lord Martin Rees: Is this the Final Century?
We are truly a hazard to ourselves and im 17 but still I have trouble believing that I will see my kids to grou up to get married and have kids of their owns :l
In terms of God, yes it is a belief you have. There is no truth. You KNOW nothing. Unless you have died and come back to life magically you cannot disprove the existence of a God you see in the afterlife or whatever other type of omniscient God people have come up with. Religion in itself is a group of belief systems I know that, and when it's being shoved in you're face you have the right to tell them to back off but that WAS NOT the case here.
@pintpot Also, I believe you are confusing 'vocabulary' and 'dictionary.'
You are allowed to have your own vocabulary (and I'm sure it annoys you when someone has one different from your own), but to have your own dictionary is a tad misleading, and well, pompous.
@pintpot I'm not interested in your hypothetical (I would accept hypotheticAL btw) and bogus claim. All I know is that according to New Oxford, American Heritage and Random House dictionaries (all sources I consider legitimate) epical is a proper, although archaic word. That is all.
Good luck on your quest to rewrite these books. I just hope your focus isn't concentrated on history books instead, as that would be bad news for all of us.
@dzloll Yeah really. Is it per-capita or not? The Canadian Federal level government has made cuts over the last 3/4 decade - although regional (Provinces) governments have subsidized renewable energy. Sun-tracking solar panels are part of 1/10 country family farms it seems.
Carl Sagan gave me a gift when i was a gift it was a telescope...Man my dad and I still use it in HIS HONOR... WE MISS YOU CARL!! You are now venturing the stars now.
angryrhino420 Yeah, fuck our species, the only ones so far to enter space. Fuck our planet, the only planet known to harbor life. Let us let our fears govern everything we do. Fuck your paranoia.
Truly epical!

If this series of short films doesn't move you, provoke you or inspire you, then you have no soul and are dead inside.
ciaranoc 5 months ago 126
@ciaranoc i feel like this comment is somewhat out of place on a video that emphasizes science and nature and discourages religion (the reference to the soul i mean)
cronchify 5 months ago
@cronchify Soul, as in passion, joie de vivre, enthusiasm, zeal, etc. Definitely not in the religious sense!
ciaranoc 4 months ago
@ciaranoc but surely if thats true then there is no point in saying it cos the ppl who are moved will know that if u are not then u have no soul and the people with no soul will not give a shit
oopman12 4 months ago in playlist Stuff Phil Likes: Monday Aug 29th, 2011

Vinco 4 months ago
@Vinco No I'm not making science sound like a cult. Science is a process....a self-correcting one. Religion is not self-correcting. Every time that religion "corrects" or admits that it is wrong about a subject, it is due to the enormous pressure put onto it by empirical facts....by science.
b14blah 4 months ago
@Vinco Cont'd: Don't play word games with me either. When you play the semantics game, you can make the word "soul" mean whatever you like. Why use a word that is so tangled up with religious nonsense when you can simply say that you are filled with wonder and curiosity? By your standards, I can say that having a soul means not believing in anything supernatural and completely rejecting all religious concepts....and you would have no argument against my claim.
b14blah 4 months ago
@Vinco Cont'd: Just to be clear, I am open-minded. If the process of science one day shows that we have something that we might could call a soul, then I would be the first in line to examine the evidence. But as a man once said (and Sagan himself quoted him in his book 'The Demon-Haunted World') "It is important to have an open mind...but not so open that your brain falls out".

The music is odd and distorted (high frequencies), you should look into the quality. The rest of your videos have been quite good!

I dont really get the last image with the 'renewable energy budgets'
Are those nations implementing sustainability or ruining sustainability?
dzloll 6 months ago
@dzloll Yeah really. Is it per-capita or not? The Canadian Federal level government has made cuts over the last 3/4 decade - although regional (Provinces) governments have subsidized renewable energy. Sun-tracking solar panels are part of 1/10 country family farms it seems.
