Hey gurp - Yeah, "raw" is the perfect word. And it seemed like he never took a breath during his really fast (and inventive) solos. Wow, I love listening to his fast songs. Just when you think he's gotta bring it back to the basic theme, he flies off in another direction! It's so beautiful, and so stimulating even after all this time has passed.
The trumpet, my favorite jazz instrument. And when it comes to the trumpet, there is pretty much Miles, Dizzy, and Kenny Dorham. Kenny didn't achieve 100th of the fame of the others, but they would certainly admit that he was near to being on their level. Check out the CD Matador for Kenny at his fierce best.
Hey Post - I've heard of Clifford Brown, but never heard him play. I'll check him out. I've heard Hank Mobley, and he's a great player, but I think Kenny was somewhat better known, but not by much. It's amazing how the music from that era holds up and is still so listenable, whether it's jazz, rock and roll, country, whatever.
You forgot Hubbard and Morgan, there, brother. I liked Miles' early bop material but lost interest when he came obsessed with the Harmon. A trumpet is such a dynamic and powerful instrument for jazz, I can't see why you'd want to use a mute unless you were playing a ballad. Miles should have played the sax if he wanted that sound. JMO.

Kenny was the best. He had a way of playing ''raw" that no one else could come close to. R.I.P.
I love Mobley, too. He's my favorite tenor. R.I.P., too, brother.

If you're talking hard-bop trumpet, you have to invite Clifford Brown to the table.
In terms of recognition, Kenny Dorham (of the 50s) makes me think of tenor saxophonist, Hank Mobley.
