I believe in part it is from some of the suffering i encountered in that hell. Hey everyone my name is Erica Garfinkel i was in Family one from April 14, 2003-July 29, 2005,28 months of my life turned to shit. I came in deeply disturbed due to troublesome family circumstances and left with more emotional problems i could ever imagine. I also felt like i needed to make up for lost time as a result of having lost out on a high school experience many kids were deprived of. I was on the streets shooting up and at such a low point.

alot of this has changed however i also agree with this guy i just got out of the place within the last year. It did change my life on the positive side of the spectrum but they must have changed a lot because they never hit kids with lamps, etc. but alot of this is very true in some senses i cannot believe this. Dosn't sound like the Family School I went to from 1990-1993. I have nothing but good things to say about my experience and for that I would like to thank the Family School . The family helped build my foundation of life from a young troubled teen to a responsable young man. Sounds like jon has some mental issues . Jon's looking to place blame on his failures in life and even though there might be some truth in what he 's saying it's with out a doubt twisted a little. Don't you think Jon?

My life has been nothing but good since the school, but that was because of my own decisions, there are certain clear cut lines of where therapy stops and abuse starts, the FFS in many cases crosses that line and regardless of what your end results were that is illegal and unethical.

Jon isn't resentful - he's angry (justifiably so!), but more than that he's standing up to injustice. GOD would have done the same thing had he been sent to a place run by child abusers that calls itself treatment. Its terribly sad that some folks believe abuse is necessary for healing. OH, the absurdity! IF FFS teaches nothing else, its that. And students become complicit in their own maltreatment and that of others. Great.
People need to understand that the Family School is a business. It costs over 60 thousand dollars a year to send your child there. Anytime your child spends the night in the "time-out room", a 6 by 6 room where the "bad kids" go, thats 150 dollars for that night. Plus, the parents provide the clothing, school materials and such. The food is cheap and unhealthy. The School has one thing to offer that parents can not offer their children: A new way of life. And parents are willing to pay for that.
After being there for 18 months (which is the minimum stay they require, usually though many stay for over 2 years) it's very hard to pick up the pieces and move forward with life. Having no support, old habits as well a new bad habits learned from other during this stay, only serve as additional obstacles to the ones previously faced prior to entering "treatment"

If these kids are not obeying their parent's rules (such as don't do drugs and be respectful) that that is what you should do. once you are of legal age you can leave the house .. support yourself and take all the drugs you want... even O.D. for all we care. Thank you sooo much for bringing light to what has happened in that place. This stuff is NOT made up. Thank you so much. I'm sure there are many alumni out there who were either afraid to come forward or did come forward (most likely to family) and were ignored. It's true that there needs to be places for troubled teens, but they need to be safe and regulated.

First off, don't talk to me like you know me, or anything about me. You can't even spell my name right and it's on the page. Second, it's not all about stats. Seeing kids wrapped up in duct tape and blankets, punched by staff, as well as by Tony Argiros himself, forced to eat food they were allergic to or could not eat due to religion, forced menial labor while not in school....etc. These are not resentments it's a matter of abuse. I'm sure all of the kids in there this happened to were not behaving as they should have been. what should they have doen.. given out awards for bad behaviour. Sometimes a kid needs a goo butt whoopen to straighten out.. My Dad did that to me.. and I straightened right up... cuz I knew it wasn't greener on the other side (IE: reform school!)

The staff bio and qualifications is part of the bill that is currently in the process. It has stalled in the Senate at the moment, but will hopefully be worked on soon. The economy seems to have made a lot of things take a back seat.

I am not a staff member. I am not saying that the dozens of children who were starved, wrapped in blankets and duct-taped, etc., etc., are wrong for feeling that way. The family school I was there! My name IS MELISSA PITTS and I still 11yrs later have issues from being in that place. It helped me non it harmed me more then I was even aware of and still today I feel for any of the students there and the prison they are forced to remain in. My prayers are with them all.

My brother went there from 99-01.That experience at the family school has scarred him for life!He has no self esteem, no social or communication skills, never intgeracts with women-since that was "forbidden" at the ffs. @homedog1962 sometimes parents aren't perfect and overreact. Shit you can't judge someone else's parent because of your own situation. I got sent to the ffs and for the first six months they thought I was a alcoholic because of my mother. I had only drank 3 times previous to going there. Sometimes there are situations that are different.

The question was - why were you put there by your parents? I'm thinking there must have been a good reason (at least I hope there was)otherwise you are right.. wouldn't make sense. A 3.0GPA and staying out late and smoking a little is no reason to send someone there. But judging from your response I see you might have an "anger Mgmt" issue? maybe? Yeah I lost my temper I generally do no appreciate being criticized for my comments about the school. I learned an excellent work ethic and to try to control my temper. My 'rents did overreact and because of that I lost 3 1/2 years of my life .
i was in a program for a little bit less than 15 months and it was bullshit but im okay now. the program did teach me things but the only thing that stuck with me is i make my own choices. and if i fuck up i fuck up and if i do good i do good its on me. and graduating the program sure ass hell means nothing. because everyone that i talk to that graduated the program is off smoking weed or worse. and the fact that i havent touched the the stuff i get credit for that one. not a fucking program

I hate to say it but by under law what FFS did was perfectly legal. They reason why their rules have gotten 'nicer' is because th elaws keep on changing. 97-99 Family Six Represent! Holy Crow Batman! This is intense! I experienced nightmares every night after I left FFS for at least a year. Every nightmare repeated itself. Every night I got sent back to FFS in my dreams. Really shitty waking up out of breath realizing I am in a bed at home every morning. Despite the fact, the school did more good than bad. Even if it was the worst experience of my life, its a good thing I went Props to Mr. Martin-Crawford!

@divaskyreisman Yes many of us asked to call CPS, or to simply tell parents what was really happening, and were NOT allowed to make those calls...and were punished after telling parents what happened. it may not have been the case for you, but it was par for the course for years.

I am appalled that someone would have the gall to criticize such a wonderful advocate. All I can say is that I wish during my time at FFS 4 years ago, I had as dedicated of someone fighting for me. Sure any student who is fresh out of there might be a little foggy in the head for the first year...the school does everything in its power to tear down your will to fight and its focus is on dehumanizing and tearing the students self esteems down in the name of therapy.
The school terrifies students into thinking they will die if they leave. Its a brilliant scam in some senses, get kids to NEED ffs, because in turn FFS needs the kids....for the $60,000/year fee. Everyone should have access to phone calls for Child Protective Services family members, no student should be forced to do physical labor against their will, and all staff working with kids should have background checks for sexual offenses.

You must be talking about the Westover girls whose mother had them kidnapped and incarcerated at FFS. One day law will finally be on their side. May God have mercy on the woman who did this and may God bless the woman who works tirelessly on their behalf. No acess to phones, no access to computers, no access to all the wonderful events which are part of the right of passage from teen years to adulthood. I had the priveledge to spend time with both women who do not deserve this.
I also want to just say that FFS was a huge part of my life's journey so far. I can't say what my parents' motives were for sending me away or if the tactics that the school employed were good or bad. What I can say is that I don't believe they did anything illegal whatsoever, and what I remember most about that school is feeling sincerely that above all else, I was truly loved and cared for. I am who I am today partly because of that experience, and I have no regrets about it whatsoever.
Interesting that you aren't in contact with Laura, though. She's been eighteen for almost a year-- it's her choice not to talk to you, because you are jeapordizing her health and well being. I am sure you want to be a support in Laura and Sophie's lives. I know you have the best intentions but you are hurting them. They were sent to the school for a reason. I know that your letters to Laura were really harmful-- I remember how she would come to me crying because of the things you said.

They've never been happier, thanks to people who love and care about them in a way you never could, and their incredible mother always tried to but was never able to get through. I was lucky enough to have been a large part of Laura's first six months at the school and believe that she is an incredibly strong, spirited young woman. In fact, she just got a work study job working in admissions.
I attented the FFS from 2000 -2002 and truley believe that they brainwashed us while we were there. Their methods of rehabilitation can only be described as cruel and unusual punishment. Ive always said I wouldnt send my very worst enemy to that school!

I attended FFS from 2000- 2002. I definitly agree that the school went to extreme measures to "scare" people straight. I also strongly believe that they use brainwashing tactics by completly isolating people from civilization. I was at the family from Jan98-Dec99 and I can personally attest to seeing all of the things that John was talking about. As I grow older I realize how young I really was when they got into my head. This is certainly an intense subject matter.. but I'll say this: The Family Foundation School is unlike anything I can articulate to anyone that hasn't experienced it. This is not a competition on who was the baddest kid, who had the most sanctions, or who was abused. There is so much more that lies beneath the surface of a FFS-alum. Nothing I could clearly explain, but I will say, it has 100% effected my life today. No question about that. I made some friends and had some good times...

I think what some people fail to realize is that at a certain age children begin to explore new concepts associated with adulthood. I DID live in a tent with full gear and an M-16....and it was easy compared to FFS. Chances are you're one of the few that stayed sober....check with your classmates. 95-97 has been totally repressed in my mind. I had the most aweful experience at FFS. I had never seen snow in my life and all the sudden I was dropped off in this Cold Hell Hole and left by my family bc they trusted these fake ass random people with no real experience. alot of this has changed however i also agree with this guy i just got out of the place within the last year. It did change my life on the positive side of the spectrum but they must have changed a lot because they never hit kids with lamps, etc. but alot of this is very true in some senses i cannot believe this. My life has been nothing but good since the school, but that was because of my own decisions, there are certain clear cut lines of where therapy stops and abuse starts, the FFS in many cases crosses that line and regardless of what your end results were that is illegal and unethical.

People need to understand that the Family School is a business. It costs over 60 thousand dollars a year to send your child there. Anytime your child spends the night in the "time-out room", a 6 by 6 room where the "bad kids" go, thats 150 dollars for that night. Plus, the parents provide the clothing, school materials and such. The food is cheap and unhealthy. The School has one thing to offer that parents can not offer their children: A new way of life. And parents are willing to pay for that.

After being there for 18 months (which is the minimum stay they require, usually though many stay for over 2 years) it's very hard to pick up the pieces and move forward with life. Having no support, old habits as well a new bad habits learned from other during this stay, only serve as additional obstacles to the ones previously faced prior to entering "treatment"

The family school I was there! My name IS MELISSA PITTS and I still 11yrs later have issues from being in that place. It helped me non it harmed me more then I was even aware of and still today I feel for any of the students there and the prison they are forced to remain in. My prayers are with them all.

Yeah I lost my temper I generally do no appreciate being criticized for my comments about the school. I learned an excellent work ethic and to try to control my temper. My 'rents did overreact and because of that I lost 3 1/2 years of my life .

i was in a program for a little bit less than 15 months and it was bullshit but im okay now. the program did teach me things but the only thing that stuck with me is i make my own choices. and if i fuck up i fuck up and if i do good i do good its on me. and graduating the program sure ass hell means nothing. because everyone that i talk to that graduated the program is off smoking weed or worse. and the fact that i havent touched the the stuff i get credit for that one. not a fucking program

I hate to say it but by under law what FFS did was perfectly legal. They reason why their rules have gotten 'nicer' is because th elaws keep on changing. That is why no one is wrapped in blankets anymore. Another theraputic school did the same thing in another state and killed a kid. So now there is a law against it.

97-99 Family Six Represent! Holy Crow Batman! This is intense! I experienced nightmares every night after I left FFS for at least a year. Every nightmare repeated itself. Every night I got sent back to FFS in my dreams. Really shitty waking up out of breath realizing I am in a bed at home every morning. Despite the fact, the school did more good than bad. The school terrifies students into thinking they will die if they leave. Its a brilliant scam in some senses, get kids to NEED ffs, because in turn FFS needs the kids....for the $60,000/year fee. Everyone should have access to phone calls for Child Protective Services family members, no student should be forced to do physical labor against their will, and all staff working with kids should have background checks for sexual offenses.

You must be talking about the Westover girls whose mother had them kidnapped and incarcerated at FFS. One day law will finally be on their side. I also want to just say that FFS was a huge part of my life's journey so far. I can't say what my parents' motives were for sending me away or if the tactics that the school employed were good or bad. What I can say is that I don't believe they did anything illegal whatsoever, and what I remember most about that school is feeling sincerely that above all else, I was truly loved and cared for. I am who I am today partly because of that experience, and I have no regrets about it whatsoever.

Interesting that you aren't in contact with Laura, though. She's been eighteen for almost a year-- it's her choice not to talk to you, because you are jeapordizing her health and well being. I am sure you want to be a support in Laura and Sophie's lives. I know you have the best intentions but you are hurting them. They were sent to the school for a reason. I know that your letters to Laura were really harmful-- I remember how she would come to me crying because of the things you said.

They've never been happier, thanks to people who love and care about them in a way you never could, and their incredible mother always tried to but was never able to get through. I was lucky enough to have been a large part of Laura's first six months at the school and believe that she is an incredibly strong, spirited young woman. In fact, she just got a work study job working in admissions.

I also strongly believe that they use brainwashing tactics by completly isolating people from civilization. I was at the family from Jan98-Dec99 and I can personally attest to seeing all of the things that John was talking about. As I grow older I realize how young I really was when they got into my head. This is certainly an intense subject matter.. but I'll say this: The Family Foundation School is unlike anything I can articulate to anyone that hasn't experienced it. This is not a competition on who was the baddest kid, who had the most sanctions, or who was abused. There is so much more that lies beneath the surface of a FFS-alum. Nothing I could clearly explain, but I will say, it has 100% effected my life today. No question about that. I made some friends and had some good times...

sent to a school like this, and yes my parents did hit me growing up. However, there is a big difference between a slap and a punch. There is a difference between being sent to your room or being tied up. I don't see how those things can be productive to the development of a child. I see that as being psychologically harmful. I was incarcerated at the FFS from June 5, 1998 to December 15th 2001 when I graduated. I DID live in a tent with full gear and an M-16....and it was easy compared to FFS. Chances are you're one of the few that stayed sober....check with your classmates. The stats aren't far from reality just because you're one out of your class that disagrees. Nobody is talking about failing FFS. There is a difference between "failing" and playing the game. 95-97 has been totally repressed in my mind. I had the most aweful experience at FFS. I had never seen snow in my life and all the sudden I was dropped off in this Cold Hell Hole and left by my family bc they trusted these fake ass random people with no real experience. I caught pneumonia and was left to die on their nasty old stained up couches. It went on for months until my father came up to bring me to the hospital. Thru this I was accused of trying to run away and was put on blackout.

96-99 I was a student and I admire my parents for asking for help. I had a great child hood never beaten or treated badly. I fought with them b/c I wanted to. So where does that take your theory? Kids choose their own destiny parents try to guid then in the right choice. Parents try to make sure if they were messed up that their kids don't make the same mistake.

nicole you are still obviously suffering from the very damaging effects of FFS brainwashing. you should be pitied. FFS has destroyed the lives of many youths. many more than ever could have died from drug overdoses or prison life. FFS abuses children and must be closed down.you must seek counseling to get deprogrammed. you need help nicole.
