This is revisionist history. Bowie had a mega hit with Ziggy Stardust which was released before 1973 (Suffragette City) in 1973 he released Aladdin Sane (Jean Genie) If anyone "Launched" Bowie's career, it was Bowie. He invented Glam, (or was among the very small handful of people who did)
@rlholo Bowie wasn't doing much in America at that time. In England he was getting big but in America he was very underground. After the release of Space Oddity in the US in 1973, he became big. This is an actual / factual story.
@xmakx37 I checked out the wikipedia page. If you click on the source of that information (which is this link, w w w . recordrama. c o m/david_bowie.htm) it takes your right back to this video. So basically it's just his word of it. You sholdn't believe everything your read in wikipedia.
Maybe he wasn't only collecting all this 70ies music but also living a real rock'n'roll-life with too much sex'n'drugs'alcohol: Space Oddity was released in the U.S. in '72, not in '73. Besides that, Bowie had become a huge Star in Europe with "Ziggy Stardust" - it was defenitely not a question of 300 copies of one song for a genius like David Bowie to become huge all over the world! There's no doubt that it was all up to him due to all that Angies and Pauls who talk nonsens and believe it....
@ianhitman Rotten old albums? he has UNRELEASED albums by the Rolling stones and music that the library of congress that doesent even have, that is STILL in mint condition!
Some truth to this story. Bowie got very little recognition for Space Oddity when it came out in 1969 but Bowie became a Superstar when Ziggy Strdust was released in 1972. The first Ziggy show was in Clevland, Ohio in 1972.
Great story. Wish it was believable. Maybe if this guy gave a s*** about his customers and wasn't a pompous ass, I'd feel this had some credibility. Record Rama is one of the few indie record stores that I was glad to see go.
What a load of bull. In 1973 David Bowie was already a major superstar. What is this guy blabbering about? So maybe Bowie wasnt yet as big in the States? Who cares? The man was already a multi millionaire!
This is a true story.

Poor man is deluded. He is lost in a cloud of too much vinyl. Far above the moon... Planet Earth is blue, and there's nothing he can do...

I put this link on FB of Bowie and asked if this is true.

Strange.
I shopped at this man's store many, many times over the years and he was always very personable and friendly to me.
Must have been you.

Must have been me. And all of the other folks in Pittsburgh music retail. Ask around. Not a well loved businessman.

The story of what he did might be true to help Bowie in the States, but it's a little ridiculous to say Bowie had no audience then.
