Muhammed showed by his actions what he meant. He was a conqurer that spread islam by the sword. It is all over the islamic texts. So the verses are not simply "defense", they are strategy for dealing with those who resist being conquered and converting to islam. If they did not the texts shows that they were slaughtered(men), plundered and enslaved(women and children). Since Muhammed is the rolemodel for muslims still today this is a big problem. Muslims don't differentiate between a personal spiritual choice and a mandatory social order. It has nothing to do with terrorism. The majority of Muslims won't murder people, but that doesn't mean that they won't try to turn Sharia law into the law of whatever state they live in.
