  • sound like seth rogan

  • i like that mario tee

  • I don't have a guitar with me right now to test it but I can tell you this...The melody is a key factor in this one since the chord progression seems to be non standard sounding in my head. in the chorus "Id like TO make myself believe" The word "TO" Its note for the vocal melody should be the key of the song in Major. Same as in the verse "Ten mill-ION fireflies" On the "ion" on million.. same root note I think.

  • can u tell me in what oclives owl city was singing in fireflies

  • "Ya happen to hear that note a lot and it sounds like home!"

    LOL! Great video. Very informative.

  • I wish you had explained this with an instrument than keep yapping for 8 and a quarter min!!

  • 2:06 progression ?

  • I hate to say it, but so many music lessons, especially for beginners lack a rational, consistent, articulate explanation

  • dang dude you help me out alot thankx 4 da info

  • Dm (F major) I guess? :S

  • Hey, I have a question, I'm having these chords: Dm, A#, F, C which key signature would it be? :/

(PS you kinda look like private Pyle :p)

  • so basically home is the key?

  • Shit am i trying to find the key via the instrument or the vocals.

  • is it any software that i can use to find the key maybe free

  • Most of the times the first note played is the key of the song, unless it is played on the upbeat. But in that case the following note (or the note on the next downbeat) is the key note.

  • I Masturbated to this felt so good

  • Man you talk to much but that was helpful though ! do you mean the first chord of the song is the key too of the song or what ? If I did not understand yet try to help me please !!!!...

  • @jazzytrumpet - I see what you're saying - I was oversimplifying and totally just thinking in terms of the major triad. Good call. cheers.

  • this is awesome

  • can you give me another sign that im not going crazy please?

  • This is probably a stupid question but i honestly dont know. What is a mode?

  • thanks, this was helpful

  • best lesson ive seen on this topic, the part about some notes working and some not meaning that its in a mode was just what i needed thx

  • no shit!

  • so it's just based on sound?like sharps and flats? because i always thought it meant like how many notes you were playing in a certain pitch could you give me an example

  • play an A chord, then an Aminor.

  • hey robot could you explain to me what is the difference between major and minor and why are they called major and minor

  • major are more happeir sounding minor are darker sounding if that helps

  • in any key, there are 7 notes, for example in the key of Cmajor: *C D E F G A B*. these seven notes are reffered to as the "intervals" or "tones" of the key. so in the Cmajor example, C is 1 (often called the "root" or "tonic" or "home" note.) D is 2, E 3, F 4, G 5, A 6, and B is 7. the difference between a major and minor key, is the 3rd interval (or tone). in a major key the 3rd interval is natural, in a minor key it is flat. so in C major, you get CDEFGAB. in C minor you get CDEbFGAB.

  • to relate this concept to chords, you have to understand the concept of the major/minor triads. the major triad, is made up of the 1st, 3rd and 5th tones. so we take the example of Cmaj again. we know the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the Cmaj scale are C, E and G. So the Cmaj triad, is C,E,G. To make it Cmin, you just flatten the 3rd (E) so you get Eb. So the Cmin triad is C, Eb, G.

  • if you play a Cmaj chord, look at what all of the notes are, write them down, then play a Cmin chord and do the same, youll see what I mean. hope what Ive said helps. message me with any questions you have aye. I still remember what its like to want so badly to know what the difference is, and how keys chords and scales work.

  • wow thank you so much you answered two of my questions actually three thank you

  • haha no problem, I saw your question and how round about and unhelpful the responses were.. I remember when I first asked "whats the difference" and a mate of mine said, "one sounds happy and the other sounds sad", and I said "youre telling me that the musical theory behind major and minor keys is broken down into subjective emotions? gimme a break.." happy to help man.

  • Ha you can get into quite a depth with this question if need be. It has to do with the overtone series. Which relies on the concert pitch to be arranged from a starting point in our tuning system. That concert pitch is determined in china for years now where they average the past couple of years in some mathematical equasion to tune their earth bells or some shit. lol I forget the exact specifics of their method and reasoning.

  • @digestiontactics

I've been having a lot of trouble actually understanding the whole key concept (theory won't stay in my head lol). I play guitar but don't actually know how to improvise and stay in key. Like if im playin in, the general example CMaj, how do you jump around and stay in the same key? Is it as simple as just hitting those 7 notes wherever or is there more to it than that?

  • its pretty much that simple. find a chart somewhere for the 7 modes fitting into the key of Cmaj and it should give you a perspective. its literally taking those notes and finding them wherever they occur on the fretboard, modal patterns are a good start point. hope this helps.

  • thanks:)

  • 7 notes different octaves

  • @digestiontactics Your kind of off there doc. you are right the 3rd note in a minor scale (or key) is flat but the 5th and 7th notes are as well. That's because the intervals(spacing between the notes) are(w=whole and h=half) w,w,h,w,w,w,h for a major scale and a minor scale is w,h,w,w,h,w,w

  • @digestiontactics Thank you! did you take any lessons in music theory?

  • so if ur in the right key but not the right mode can u still solo over it?

  • sure

  • @musichopper arent you that guy who can do 8 bit tapping?? (sorry for my writing)

  • Thanks for the help. Trying to figure out the key of a song I'm trying to learn and it's ridiculous.

  • so if you were trying to figure out like a metallica song where theyre constantly repeating the e string then would most of their songs be in the key of e

  • I would firstly guess it was in E minor or some sort of E minor mode because almost all of their songs are in that key lol.

  • i was wondering if you can make a video of yourself in the PROCESS of figuring out what key the song is in. Like your way of doin it. thanks that would be bery helpful

  • very good, very helpful and clear. I know what your talking about most the time until you get to the augmented cause i can play every note that sounds right with a song but still very little knowledge

  • yo man thanks so much. i just needed to find that out

  • That helps me- Thanks Robot

  • Thank you very much

  • Short answer: use your ears.

  • its not that simple, i don't care if you think you can but its hard to do it by ear...
