I'm not defending USA... For me, USSR was the true winner of the space race. They had better technology and achieved more than USA. A single milestone for the americans (first man on moon) doesn't make them winners.

Besides, the soviets were more clever than USA... USSR were fully ready but let USA go first, just in case. If something bad happens, let it happen to the yankees. USSR didn't want to risk that much, they risked a lot with Gagarin.
