While appreciating the efforts of the researcher, particularly since his motives are benign ( he wishes no harm towards these bears), it may be questionable in the long run, if such a close relationship between a human and a bear is beneficial for the bear. The bear may come to trust humans too much, which is not a good thing, because humans are predators, too. I understand the motivation behind it, namely to save the bears, but too much human interaction is probably counter-productive.
Dr Rogers has known Lily since she was a cub and is a beautiful example of the method of studying bear that the NABC promotes. Lily and her current cub Hope are now settling down for the winter in their den, beginning hibernation!
@myAngelZelda omg,,,thats so untrue.. you really need to learn more about black bears. only a very very few ever hurt humans. they r not people killers for gods sake..
@lovaxl lol.....they kill to protect themselves and their cubs..its how they survive..taming them will make them depend more on us,how will they know how to get ready for winter?when its been fed almost its whole life..think about it.
They call me Mad Jack, and if there is anybody in these mountains that knows the real story about Lily, that'd be me. So I'm putting it down in writing just how it happened in hopes of setting the record straight. Well, my friend Lily was accused of a crime she didn't commit...so she escaped into the mountains, leaving behind the only life that she ever knew. Now that wilderness out there ain't no place for a greenhorn and her chances of survivin' were mighty slim
Oh this is just so sad. This has to be just the worst for Doc and Sue -- prayers and thoughts go out to you and the entire staff at the NABC. They will come home!
I am worried about Hope as well, and whatever is going on with Lily. It is interesting that she waited for the food and didn't grab the whole bag like my cats would have done.
My heart is aching for Dr. Rogers and Sue! As bad as I hurt, I cannot imagine how they are feeling. I pray that Lily will find her way back to Hope, and they will live happily ever after! I love you, girls!
I'm glad Lily is alright but I am very worried about Hope. I hope you/she finds her. Poor baby without her mommy. I'm glad they have you folks to keep an eye on them. Hats off to you and the man examining her - awesome.
It is tough being the first born. Mom is inexperienced and imature, more things can go wrong. Lily behaves towards Hope more like a big sister than a mom. Hope is a healthy intelligent little cub, I hope they find each other soon...........
So wonderful to see the interaction of Lynn and Lily. Hope is a smart and brave little cub...she will be okay. From me to God's ears. Head back dear Lily...please.

I know that Lily is used to being around these humans, but I am surprised that she can be trusted to eat right from his hand.

feeding a bear out of my hand... Seems dangerous, but I'd like to try. Was Lily born into captivity?
