Astonishing performance, highly deserved win. I only consider Vivien Leigh in GONE WITH THE WIND to be comparable, although Joanne Woodward in Three Faces of Eve and, in more recent history, Charlize Theron in Monster and Marion Cotillard in Vie en Rose were also oustanding.

Frankly I think the reason she hasn't won another Oscar despite all the nominations is due to her performance in this movie. This is the benchmark that she is always compared to, and it simply cannot be toped (by anybody for that matter).

The 1982 best actresses nominees were all great! But Julie Andrews looks gorgeous, dazzling and undoubtedly the most beautiful - every inch the star! Meryl was given the Oscar, but her movie is one you see only once in a lifetime. Victor/Victoria is such a wonderful musical comedy; you can watch it again and again. Julie was such a joy to watch in it.I wish the Academy would give Oscars to comedies as well, like the Golden Globes.Both Meryl and Julie were winners that year.They were great!!!

There was NO doubt Meryl would win. One of the greatest Best Actress performances, arguably second only to Vivien Leigh in GONE WITH THE WIND. Other terrific winning examples were Ingrid Bergman in ANASTASIA, Joanne Woodward in THREE FACES OF EVE, Sophia Loren in TWO WOMEN, Charlize Theron in MONSTER, and Marillion Cotillard in LA VIE EN ROSE.

I felt that she really deserved an Oscar for her performance in Silkwood, that performance amazed me. Just comes to show that when it comes to acting no one ever has the same opinion.
