At that point in history a majority of Americans did not feel that interracial couples qualified as married by their definition of marriage at the time. This is the same situation as today. What we didn't do then was put it to a vote.

I helped returned marriage to its original definition. Between one man and one woman. This was never a rights issue. I constantly question what our elected officials do. I view intelligently questioning authority as a duty.

"Traditional" marriage as we know it is already a revision, so getting rid of unjust discrimination within it makes total sense to me.

I don't know if you can say Mainers have consistently rejected homosexual marriage, as it was nearly an even split.
