  • We went in mid June. It was cooler than normal but the temperature range was 38 to 100. We picked June because we were more likely to get the hike that we wanted. If you have been to Ribbon Falls and back a R@R hike will be easy for you. We could write a book of things to do but I will keep it a simple list in my next post as I am already running out of room on this.

  • @mrpeaster My son and I went to Ribbon Falls as a day hike from Phantom Ranch last Thanksgiving (2009). It's a bit over six miles each way, but the elevation gain /loss was only about 1000', and the temps were cool (especially in the Box). We went down the South Kaibab and up the Bright Angel, with a night at Indian Garden, plus the day hike to the falls. It was a great trip, but we'd love to try a rin2rim someday.

  • Great video! I really want to do this hike myself someday. Been up the North Kaibab as far as Ribbon Falls with my son - that's a real special place - but this video makes me want to take the next step and do a rim2rim. We went in November, so it wasn't 100 degrees (it was in the mid-60's when we went to the falls). Was the heat a challenge? That's one part of a rim2rim I'm dreading.

    1. If you want to enjoy the canyon, never hike more than 7 miles a day. It will give you time to hang out and enjoy it.

    2. Start hiking at first light. You will avoid the heat.

    3. Pack light! Our packs were under 25lbs including water. Base gear - Pack, clothes, cook ware, sleep gear and tent were under 11 lbs in each of 2. Base gear = everything but food and water.

    4. Find a light weight trail running shoe and use them. Mine were close out for $50.

  • @mrpeaster Thanks! Great advice. Would you ditch the tent if it was warm and there wasn't rain in the forecast, or is it useful to keep the critters (scorpions, mice) out of your bags at night?

  • @landrysg I wanted to ditch the tent but my wife wouldn't have it. Afterwards I am glad we had it. The mice at Indian Gardens and Cottonwood were climbing on it and we didn't have food anywhere near it. We had a REI 2 man half dome with the rain fly @ 5 pounds. We split the weight for 2.5 each.

  • Seems you had a great time! Nice video! One day we'll do the same!

  • Breath taking and Butt Puckering all at the same time. Good Job Jason and Alaina. Thanks for taking us along with you.
