  • building one curranty.. What tranny and t case you go with?

  • @montagazzi8 AX-15 and stock transfer case. I did put a slip yoke eliminator kit in it.

  • @bedspins which adapter plate is on the motor for running that?? Mine has a chevy now. Its going into a cherokee that currantly has a aw4 and 231 t case with sye. I have a sm465 at home and a nv3500 ..But a stock jeep ax15 prolly fits nice

  • @montagazzi8 I have the Novak adapter with a toyota clutch slave. The SM465 has a 1 to 1 final drive. If you are putting a low rpm diesel in it, got with an overdrive. If its a daily driver, the AX-15 will hold up fine.

  • Love everything but the huge body lift.... 1.25 inches is the highest i'd go... Did you put that big of a body lift on for looks or so the drivetrain would fit? If its the latter than ill stop complaining haha nice swap though!

  • @Gocza1377 I had to go with the 3" lift because the engine is so tall. I installed it without any lift and the exhaust wouldn't clear the fire wall and the hood wouldn't close. I had to do it.

  • This is amazing. I bet that Wrangler rips a new one in the local trails. I am wanting to do a 4bt swap in a comanche SO badly. As soon as the wallet permits, that's my next project... right along side the 350 vortec swap into my Jeep XJ.

Quick question... I've heard a lot of people complain about the vibrations the 4bt puts out. Now, I'm not whimp, so some vibes and noise aren't going to kill me, but are the vibes as bad as people make them out to be? I appreciate any feedback!

  • @1991JeepMan I was afraid of the mystical vibration that I was hearing about when I was building it. It runs way smoother that it did when it had the 4 banger in it. I have no idea what they were talking about.

  • nice how much work was this swap? im thinking of trying the same thing.

it sucks not having a vehicle for shitty weather and i figured whats better for bad weather than a jeep with gobs of torque.. :)

  • @dwnrety1 not too hard of a swap, the hardest part is getting the 4bt..

  • Be honest mate, you wanted a Caterpillar under the hood lol :)

  • @KPAracing No, I wanted a CASE under the hood. (they are yellow too)

  • @bedspins no way dude.... cat fucking murder's case on everything...

  • What a great swap. I would like to get something like that. A good combination of torque, fuel mileage and reliability. There should be a forum for swaps like this one

  • @luv2offroad1987 4btswaps (dot) com

  • Like that combination...Jeeps need that kind of low end torque on the trails...nice job on the installation.

  • @solidgoldmorningstar Thanks...

  • guys, stop hating on his jeep. its his. he likes the paint and the shifter. so you shouldnt tell him it sucks.

  • Bad paint job its not a cat... and you paint the black hoses...

  • @tinderinc I guess you never seen a CASE backhoe, excavator, skid steer with a cummins.

  • @bedspins yea but still most engines that are yellow are cat. I used to do glass on heavy duty machines so I have seen my fair share of backhoes and excavators. Did you paint that engine or did you get it outta a machine like that? I still like the conversion tho anytime you put a diesel motor in a once gas powered anything Im usally in love with it hahah. I like all the diffrent swaps people have been doing with the 4bt

  • @tinderinc WHAT HAVE YOU BUILD JACK ASS!!!

  • @serger2010 Have you checked out project Honda Skyline now that's a BUILD.... (check my videos).

O yeah and a "WHAT HAVE YOU BUILD JACK ASS!!!" is not proper English its BUILT**** So Id say your the JACK ASS that or a Redneck!

  • @tinderinc yep your a jack ass!!!

  • @tinderinc dont talk shit about rednecks it'll get ur ass beat

  • Awesome. Except for the skull shifter. freaking corny.

  • @mopar43v3r The scull shifter I made myself from some old harley shovelhead pistons. I cast it from a clay mold I made. It may be corny to you but its a one of a kind piece of art to me.

  • @bedspins Thats all that really matter is if you like it, just stating my opinion.

  • :59 = whysky tango foxtrot? if u dont know wat i mean nvm

  • I have the pipe exiting out of the hood now.

  • Is that straight piped? Thats a must for any diesel in my opinion. Sounds so much better, and not as much clunking noise

  • Diesel is THE ONLY way to go! My father had a Willys Jeep in the early 70's which came stock with a Perkins N.A. diesel engine. My little '81 Isuzu diesel 4X4 truck gets at least 35 MPG. I am putting a turbocharged engine in it soon.

  • 4bta is a perfect motor for a jeep

  • hey on your jeep what trany did you run with it? and who made you motor mounts

  • @gospeedracer40 I used the ax-15 stock transmission with no problem (knock on wood). I made the motor mounts out of pieces of angle iron. I used the liquid filled motor mounts on the front of the engine. They normally come on industrial engines and mount at the belhousing. They absorb the vibrations better than the Dodge pickups.

  • hahaha no its more like 68hp and 175ft pound torque which is about the same as the 4.2 thats in there right now..... maybe more torque..... its not going to be painted yellow..... I was thinking bright green........ not jd green tho, more like a 68 roadrunner green..... thanks for the vote of confidence.... I get the car this weekend and start riping it apart shortly there after....

  • don't get me wrong, I like the swap, I'm just giving him a hard time is all..... I wish I could afford a 4bt, but my yj will get a mercedes 4cyl diesel. Its cheap and I don't really care if I blow it up when I feed it more fuel and put a turbo on it... hahahaha

it is quite a bit lighter too so we will see how it all works out.....

  • @Michka981 Isn't that Mercedes diesel 28hp? You might have to put 2 turbos on it. Whatever you do "DON'T PAINT IT YELLOW! Good luck with it.

  • @bedspins hahaha ya something like that...... I think it is 78hp but I have a few turbos for it and a supercharger.... I'll try the turbos first then if I don't blow the thing up I'll arp the block and put compound turbos on it...... I would be happy with 250-300hp....... there is guys overseas getting 700+ out of the 5 cyl......

  • never heard of a yellow cummins... sorry.... but then again I have rarely seen a 4bt... always the six....

  • @Michka981 You guys have to get over the yellow thing. Any Case equipment comes with yellow cummins. We have a DD-90 roller, a skid steer and a backhoe, all with yellow cummins 4bts in them. The engine in the Jeep now came from a Case track hoe, which is yellow. It must be a Dodge thing.

  • What mpg does your rig get? Also what tranny or bell housing for this setup?

  • @k9forkids I get around 26 mpg, thats a considerable improvement over the 14 mpg I got with the gas motor. I have a chevy bell housing with a jeep adapter from Novak

  • @bedspins Thank you brother, great accomplishment on your jeep

  • awesome

  • Check out all the other comments. I covered it all.

  • Thats pritty neat how do you go about doin a swap like that?

  • I may just kick you in the balls for painting it cat yellow........good work on the swap but for the love of fuck why would you paint it cat yellow!?!?!?!?!

  • @Michka981 The engine was painted Rustolium Hard Hat Yellow. The new engine came from a case trackhoe which is also yellow.

  • @bedspins ahhh ok, but still i wouldn't have gone with yellow............. but thats just me, I still like the jeep tho

  • @Michka981 atleast hes not strokin it also like they say id rather be cummin then strokin

  • @floppy889 hahahahaha too true buds too true!!

  • @Michka981 Have you ever heard of Cummins Yellow? Thats like saying why did you paint your chevy Orange!

  • i got a few questions first what lift ru running and did you have any problems with the front a=sagging after the swap and how bad is the vibration some say its really bad. o and what axles ru running? thanks

  • @mthsmouse yes, the front saged about an inch and a half. I do have a 4 inch lift in the suspension and a 3 inch body lift to clear the height of the engine. No vibrations to speak of, and I have the stock axles with 4:10 gears.

  • I did the same thing in a 1998.

its forsale if anyone wants to buy it

    csa101309@yahoo.com

  • i bet that jeep does great off road now with the extra torque

  • @marshall0792 I never really had it off road. Here in Western New York it's the snow that we need the 4 wheel drive for.

  • Still got the air compressor on it. Nice jeep

  • Wow nice job. Great find on the Cummins.

I hope you get some money and fix up this nice little Jeep so she don't rust up on ya

  • @Reverseflush Too later for the rust. I'm going to look for a southern jeep to put the cummins in.

  • @bedspins

I can send you some dough to buy another Jeepy because I work in a bakery.

  • soo awesome

  • Where did u get motor mounts for this? If you made them, how did you do it?

  • @welditup85 I used the liquid filled mounts that are found on the bell housing of industrial cummins. I welded a piece of angle iron to the frame. I bolted an other piece of angle to the engine and put the mounts in between.

  • Awesome, I want to shove one in a Jeep Cherokee one day.

What kind of mpg's are you getting with the swap, and how does it feel compared to the 6 cyl?

  • @ChainerX I get about 26mpg with the cummins. It feels like driving a truck, heavy in the front end.

  • @bedspins I would Imagine, doesn't it weight about 300lbs more than the original engine? Did you add leaves to the front to compensate for the weight?

  • @ChainerX I added a 4" lift springs all the way around and 2" lift shackles up front to level it out.

  • That engine was out of a bread van. The engine that's in it now is from a Case track hoe. It has 120 hp and 320 lbs of torque.

  • Very cool. What is the engine originally out of? Any idea of the HP and Torque?

  • the sticker on the back window says it all , nice job

  • @m0dthunder Thanks

  • My ears are rattling from watching this video. I mean that in a good way. :P

  • @Flaheat Yeah, I turn down the radio and listen to the turbo whistle. It's better than anything on the radio...

  • soooooooooooooooooo fucking nice. I'm definitely doing this on my tj once the 4.0 goes

  • @Mitchumthegreat Thanks, its worth the work...

  • Cool, shoulda got one outa a newer case with a turbo on it. Makes a differance as far as it goes when its in a backhoe.

  • @Diggerkid The turbo is there, on the right side down low. The new motor has a high turbo on it. Check out my other video, you can see the turbo.

  • @bedspins guess Im blind.

  • Did you keep all the original drivetrain?

  • @BlakeMason2 Yes, the trans was an automatic from a 4 cylinder. I dropped a AX-15 5 speed from a 6 cylinder in it.

  • @bedspins have you had any drive train problems with the AX-15 behind that block? im assuming your running a dana 35 in back? has the extra power been a problem as far as broken driveshafts or diffs?

  • @azminivanracer I did brake a Woods custom rear drive shaft. The shaft shattered in a hundred pieces, but no problem with the AX-15.

  • Could you share what sort of gas mileage you averaged or got on the highway in this application?

  • @hollandnature

I got 14 mpg with the gas engine, now I get 24 to 26 mpg.

  • @bedspins Wow, Ive seen 6.2 chevy engines get that kinda fuel economy. I guess the 3.9 isnt the best then.

  • @Motorfordtoyota I have 4:10 gears in it. My full size 4 door, 8 foot box cummins gets 22.mpg

  • @bedspins ok

  • @GarrettKeetley his friends brand new subaru WRX STI... had all six lanes of traffic stopped on east wash. unfortunatly i have'nt seen the guy since and havent been able to talk to him. you want to see some crazy shit with a diesel, (no not a duramax with sixgun) check out what some romanians do with diesel Veedubs, it will make you blow one out your ass. its amazing stuff

  • @GarrettKeetley it wasnt called an sti. my friend owns one, its not horrific as long as you let it rev a little, definitely wasnt bad for a 1.6L i've almost bought a couple over the years, main reason i passed was i got a super deal on a turbo'd 82 300D... plus now if i crash i wont die, lol... 3800lbs vs round 2200lbs... great engines though, and you can turbo them for cheap, and i have seen alot of power out of them. guy here has one that will roast em in third, this he did after roasting

  • shitty paint but a nice engine swap!!!

  • Sorry you don't like the paint, I guess most people would prefer if a clown puked all over it. Not my style. I was going to put a chrome stack on it, but now I guess I'll steel wool it and rattle can it flat black....

  • @bedspins I was referring to the engine paint because it looks like it was put on without cleaning the grease off, and also looked like it was painted after the install.

  • That engine is on my garage floor right now. I blew that one up when a bolt in the gear case came loose and broke every gear and the cam too. I got a 4bt from a case backhoe. No grease on it but I'm not painting it. I'm leaving it shitty case yellow.

  • @bedspins sorry to here you killed the engine! yeah the colors are kick ass if you could clean it up before you paint em! I know 6 guys that are after me to get them a 4bt and one of those guys is going to attempt to put a 6.7 cummins 24v in a 1989 GMC s-15 4x4. lol that is going to be interesting to see how he does it with out a lift on the suspension. keep me posted on the engine swap I'd love to see what you get done with it!

  • @GarrettKeetley the only diesels that require some kind of forced induction are the two stroke Deeeeetroits, and its not really forced induction, its a device used to force out the exhaust gasses and bring in fresh air... a scavenging effect really. most diesels in light cars/ trucks wernt turbo'd till the 80's/ 90's

  • sweeeet

..i come from cheektowaga. moved to FL when i was 8 tho

im about to get an old comanche for free...thinkin bout a 4bt swap

  • Do it. You'll love it. Cheektowaga? The Polish capital of WNY....

  • Nice job! I live in buffalo... my swap as a 94 chevy K1500... Love it!!

  • Thanks, got any videos of yours?

  • what kind of trans did you use?

  • In the video i have a sm465 GM trans. I have since replaced it with a jeep ax15 for the overdrive. I couldn't go over 60 mph with the sm465. Now i can go 75 mph.

  • i live up in lockport sporting a 99 cherokee would love to see this beast some day :)

  • she is down right now. I'm waiting for the injector pump to come back from the rebuilders. if I'm in your area I'll email you.

  • hey nice cummins.where in buffalo are you?im right in cheektowaga

  • Thanks, I'm in West Falls, near the Aurora, Colden, Holland borders.

  • thats a sick jeep!!! what size is the motor 4bt in liters?what the motor out of?

  • It's a 3.9 liter from an old chevy bread truck.

  • GD! That is nice! The perfect Jeep! Why cant the Auto makers make a Jeep Like that? Great work man! Sounds like the perfect fit.

  • Thanks for the kind words. I agree, Chrysler should have done this swap...

  • Yes it has turbo. Check with your states laws before you do your truck. NY won't let you do this conversion without a DMV inspection and many conditons. My is a 95 so it is exempt from these laws.

  • is it a manual or auto?

  • ax-15 manual

  • do you know how heavy this engine is? i was thinking of using it for a swap... but had no idea on its weight... how much lighter than the 6bt is it?

  • The engine had a wet weight of 745 pounds (338 kg).

  • You should have put a CAT in it if you wanted a yellow motor!...original ride I guess though..any power?

  • Whats with all the yellow comments? I wish I painted it orange.... When I get the injector pump back from the rebuilders it should have all the power I need.

  • @bedspins ha ha..just giving you shit..I don't know i guess I just associate yellow diesel motors with CAT

  • @bedspins fuck them man you have the best yj ive ever seen. the exact thing i want to do. keep on keeping on my man!

  • Thanks Dude, I just got the pump turned up. I'm thinking about piping the exaust through the hood. I'll post the changes when they're done.

  • @bedspins i decided to shoot for the b3.3t ind/ag. it will be a little more rugged but a lot more rewarding seeing as not many have done it.

  • Comment removed

  • Nice project, but it looks like a pissed off 8 year old painted though, but don't get me wrong other than the square headlghts and the motor paint, nice jeep

  • I'm sure your cummins powered jeep is of show quality. I'm sorry i couldn't inpress you with my painting ability. You can blame Chrysler for the square headlights. I did the best I could for what I had.

  • @bedspins ha ha but square headlight jeeps are the best!

  • Why the hell is that Cummins Caterpillar yellow??? Unless it came from a piece of construction equipment. Time to paint on some Cummins beige or some K19 black!

  • It's not Cat yellow, it's rustolium hard hat yellow. I should have painted it chevy orange.

  • @bedspins ahhh my apologies. The 250 straight six in my 65 Chevy C10 just got a fresh coat of Chevrolet orange. Prettiest color in the world ma friend.

  • I hear ya. I need the whole Jeep sprayed Chevy orange....

  • nice stiker lol WTF?

  • i guess I would ask 7k for it. I got at least that tied up inher.

  • @bedspins I am interested in purchasing this jeep, Is there a way I can contact you ?

  • how much would you sell it for? not really interested in buying, have my own, just wondering what kind of value it has

  • i used a sealed bearing. I don't remember the size. I measured the crank hole and the input shaft. I ran down to Buffalo Bearing and they had one on the shelf. if I remember it was less than $20.

  • what did you do about you pilot bearing?

  • what did you on your clutch? im doing this swap to my tj and i orderd the plate to

adapt a chevy bellhousing to my nv3550 , but i seen where another guy used a novak kit that went between his jeep bellhousing and his 4bt . my stuff is suppose to be here tomorow from novak, may need some help...lol

  • I used the clutch slave from a Toyota. Advance Adapter has the kit. I had to modify it just a bit to make it all work.

  • hey what novak kit did you use the one that uses a chevy bellhousing or the kit that keeps the factory jeep bellhousing? thanks

  • I used the Chevy to ax-15 adapter. It's just a plate that goes between the bellhousing and the trans.

  • hey what kit from novak did you use, the one that uses a chevy bellhousing or did you keep the jeep bellhousing...thanks

  • Where did you get it and how much? Or did the Jeep come with it?

  • Had to make it myself.

  • @GarrettKeetley no they dont they can be naturally aspirated... look up 7.3 IDI no turbo... there are a handful that arent cummins 220? yeah theres a handful

  • i know how that is ive wanted to do a 350 or 4bt in my yj for awhile but after i got the lift and tires i cant afford it anymore lol

  • sick dude but lift the sucker and but some bigass tires on it

  • Thanks, I would love too but the cash is low and the bills are high...

  • damn i want to do this to me 91 yj so bad, the 350 Chevy doesn't give me the torque or gas mileage i want. or i was also thinking about just building a cj 7 from scratch out of quadratec mag and build it as a diesel? any opinion on that?

  • Should be eaiser than the YJ because of no computer in the cj.

  • is she turbo

  • The Cummins company names their engines on what they are. The 4bt means that the engine is a 4 cylinder by the "4", the "b" is the series the engine is, and the "t " denotes it is a turbo. The Dodge engines are "6bt ". The engine is the same except the 6 has 2 more cylinders.

  • Hey thank you i got her up and running like a champ ill post pictures here in the near future.. and you are right bout the 3 inch lift if you wanna run it out the back

  • What kind of fuel mileage do you get? I have a Jeep Liberty diesel 2006 -- I am getting about 26 mpg on the highway @ 70 mph

  • I get around 26 mpg. The bigger tires I have the better mileage I get. I have a programmable speedometer so its easy to change tire sizes

  • Awesome Jeep! I'm actually about to start a YJ project. I'm debating between a Ford 302 and the Cummins 4bt engine swap. Did you have to do "serious" work to fit and support the weight of the the diesel or in there?

  • You have to put the 4" suspention lift to clear the oil pan, and a 3" body lift if you want the exhaust out of the back. Everything else is just a normal swap.I'd go with the diesel just because they're cooler...

  • what tranny and what adaptor are you using? i have a 94 wrangler and im lookin to do the same

  • I'm using an ax-15 and an adapter from novak. The cummins came with a chevy bellhousing so it was an easy to hook up.

  • what tranny and what adaptor are you using? i have a 94 wrangler and im looking to do the same

  • I'm curious to know where you got the engine.

  • I got it from ebay. It came from a bread truck.

  • where did you get the engine to trans adapter from?

  • Advance adapter or novak make the adapters.

  • freaking awesome man.

  • Thanks!

  • I have a 95 with the 2.5L "low output" I-4. What would it take to put this engine into my jeep? I have an AX-5 I have thought of the conversion with the AX-15, what problems if any are you having or have had? I would like real info on this to get me started on my conversion. Thanks

  • I had no real problems. I got the adapter kit, set the trans and transfer case in the stock location. I dropped in the engine with the motor mounts attached and welded the mounts to the frame. The biggest problem I had was trying to figure out which wire was which that went to the computer. I have and AX-15 in it now. I broke a woods drive shaft and the tranny held up just fine.

  • @bedspins I have a 95 jeep just like yours with the 4bt already in it.. i installed it last weekend and was wondering which wires u had to use from the computer to get it to run and for the speed sensor and other electric crud to work.. i would really appreciate it..

  • after you cut the harness from the computer you are gonna have to test the wires to find some "key on wires". One was used for the GM style alternator that came with the 4bt and the another is used for the fuel shut off. I used an after market speedometer. I went to the chiltons manual to find hot wire from the speed sensor. It worked really well. The speedo is adjustable for tire size.

  • 4BT will fit anywhere a chevy 350 will... maybe with a little more head room
