It was his style. Singers, guitarist, bassist, drummers, keyboardist ect. all have there on style to make them feel more comfterable on stage getting the best out of them. The newer Buck is much calmer and his side of the stage is now described as a "Fuck off" feeling, said by U2's Bono. And it was there first TV appaerance, April 4 1984, they had to be e bit nervous just being a collage band
REM is a classic, by the way, is there still a good music scene in Athens, Georgia?....I know the B-52's were from there too....Just wondering...Amazing performance....
fucking classic, reminds me of days of old, rem kicked it out from day one, even though michael stipe is bald now and the musics gotten weird.. they rule!!
Like most early fans, I spent years trying to decipher Stipe's intentionally mumbled lyrics from LPs and live shows. Nice to know that he was just as unintelligible on their national TV debut...
I totally agree....I lost all interest in them after 1991 I think. Shit happens. I tihnk even Hitler noted that most artists lose their edge after their youth.
Sigh...saw them back in 1982. Nowadays I have Stipe's hairline and Buck's waistline...

in this year they probably didn't imagine they were going to release a materpiece (losing my religion) in '91, what a song one of the best I've heard

Johnny Marr was the same for the Smiths - always twatting around the stage like he was having a fit.
I remember those times though - people did actually dance like that...

Awesome. If REM made sense it would lose all of its awesomeness. Murmur is a great name for the album.

good god this band was exciting in the beginning...you really have to distinguish between "pre-Green" and "post-Green" and this shows why
