It was his style. Singers, guitarist, bassist,drummers, keyboardist ect. all have there on style to make them feel more comfterable on stage getting the best out of them. The newer Buck is much calmer and his side of the stage is now described as a "Fuck off" feeling, said by U2's Bono. And it was there first TV appaerance, April 4 1984, they had to be e bit nervous just being a collage band

Like most early fans, I spent years trying to decipher Stipe's intentionally mumbled lyrics from LPs and live shows. Nice to know that he was just as unintelligible on their national TV debut...
