I built the car in this video.. It was the first VQ35 swapped Spec V, back in 2005. The engine was from a Quest minivan (same as every other FWD VQ35DE, internally), and this particular car runs on a 2002 Altima ECU/modified harness. We just finished turbocharging a VQ35, in a 2003 Spec V.. Check out my video section for some footage. :)
actually folx, if you wanna do this swap, make sure u dont get an engine from a 350z/g35/m35. same block but different spots biult in the block for mounting.
It's not seen on cam but it's in the beggining from the 1st roll on the left side on the spec V... NOT THE s2000... S2000 had nothing to do with us just happen to be there as the 2nd race was getting started... The s2000 just took off as the SpecV and the 240 were getting set up for the roll... That's why the s2000 was way up on that race as they passed the S2000
From someone who has built tons of BOTH variants.. I will tell you that the VQ is the better option.. Drive both, and then tell me which is more fun to drive "all around".
I respect Mr. Travis Very Well... But I will Disagree with your statement... Raced 2 VQ Specs... and raced 2 VQ B14s... Nothing Special and I didn't lose one Bit. Can't say it's driver cause we all can drive..... I knew a few Others who've been VQ spec in a Boosted Spec.. Just my .02
And the MySpecV forums are amazing. How much did the swap run you? I think i'm going to turbo, because I don't think my parents would enjoy a QR sitting around in the garage, even though I'd love to have a VQ.

VQ35 has been one of the top 10 best engines for a decade now. It's used in just about everything nissan. Maxima, 3.5 Altima, Murano, 350z and the list goes on and on. The 300zx had the VG30 engine. The VQ is a proven engine and is pretty potent when QR owners swap to a VQ.

I bet the 240 would have done better with a KA Turbo setup. Much better for street/drag. The SR can make some power, but the cost of the swap for only 205-220hp pretty much just makes it the "fashionable" thing to do.
These are pretty fast cars for those of you saying they aren't. The SR20DET 240sx runs 12.9's on street tires. The VQ Spec was spraying a 75 shot for these races, and as Trav4011 said, it ran a 12.9 on slicks all motor.
They were screwing around at the light while that S2000 launched on them. The S2000 got a decent lead on them both as they were setting up the race and they both passed his ass pretty quick, as you can see, with 3 people in each car. They are not slow.
P.S. I was in a bolted Spec V behind them. The owner of the 240 is a good friend of mine, my buddy has this race from a different angle on his camera.
Unfortunately, We soon learned that Before that race in the video.. the bottle ran out of Spray. So that was a All Motor Run. And It's not as if the Spec had the bottle heated either. I personally Was there and Know both Drivers. That 240 By far isn't Slow neither is the Spec. But yes the s2k launched while we sat and talked. LOL
The Sentra is a 12.90 car on a 22" slick.. it's not slow, by any means.. I personally ran 12.90's @ 104-105mph in the car shown racing in this video. I personally built the car in question.. It is a 12.90 car, trapping 105mph on a 22x8" tire.. That is a full interior 2004 SE-R Spec V, with a stock Maxima VQ35.. the only mods are intake, headers/exhaust, and a crappy 2.5" exhaust. I assure you, it is a very fast car..
What do you consider "fast"? This is a stock sentra chassis, with a bone stock VQ35DE.. It's fast enough to beat or at least hang door to door with just about any domestic or import factory vehicle under 30 grand. The best part, is that the car can't be purchased and built for under 15K, and retains factory-like driveability, noise levels, and 30mpg on the highway..
i have mild mod VTiR, and i dunno if i should go NA to turbo now. how much did u spend on the turbo addons themselves and how much did u spend on strengthening to withstand the upgrades too
Does anyone here understand that a VQ swapped into a Spec V makes could make almost TWICE the difference that a K or B series motor would make in a civic, depending on which VQ motor? W/ a VQ35 out of an '03 Maxima, that's 255 crank HP in a fokin Spec V...PLUS mods.

Ya it the 240 wasn't boosted it woulda got walked really really really bad. Stock sr20det's only put out like 215hp, a vq35 is more like 275hp.

Btw, what year is your Spec V? I can't tell from the gauges because of the glare, and from the door inserts, it looks like an '03 or (some) '04(s).
