@trainlover658 This might sound a bit controversial, but one or two people have suggested that with the various delays and cost overruns on its latest overhaul, maybe it's time it was retired and just kept on static display. I fully appreciate what a significant piece of railway history it is, but preservation shouldn't be about just one engine - it's getting quite old now, and I wouldn't blame anyone for thinking that keeping it in mainline condition is becoming more trouble than it's worth.
Superb video here Novachannel, especially the acoustics provided by Yorks beautifully curved canopies. With a good 5.1 chanel surround sound system, its nearly as good as being there.
i found out a few days ago its costing the NRM more to overhaul 4472 than it cost the a1 trust to build tornado from scratch. i'll enjoy seeing her running in on the elr, all parts working correctly
Wow, for a british steam locomotive, thats not a bad whistle, i think thats one of the best ones in the U.K., but here in the U.S.A., we have whistles that litterally "Blow" you away! LOL
I think I was on that train cause I went on holiday to scarborough and went on a ride to york from scarborogh so i think that might have been the train i was on.
I think I was on that train cause I went on holiday to scarborough and went on a ride to york from scarborogh so i think that might have been the train i was on.
With 4472 back on the main line, it would only leave Blue Peter (60532) to return to steam before we have all four "A" LNER pacifics up and running ! what a sight it would be
Nice to see her back and well soon! Still rather have seen Mallard restored instead, but of course once Flying Scotsman is complete A1,A2,A3 and A4 will all be back running! Can't wait to see this beauty back on the Mainline!
Was at York NRM but was moved to Shildon this year. Tornado pulled it there. So yea, it is still being left in a museum, but who knows? Maybe one day.....
@TTTEFanNo22 Slight correction here, It was Mallard that was pulled by Tornado to Shildon. 'Scotsman' has been in bits in various location over the last few years, during a complete rebuild. The boiler is currently at the ELR.
I did know that and my comment was a reply to another comment but I can't find it! Lol!
Just my luck.
I have been back and forth to York over the last few years to see what progress has been made so I am hoping that it does get finished for this summer. Still, better to do the job right than to only do half a job!
Alright, I'm looking at this and thinking: "What would Gordon say if he had to be modified to look like that?" I'm not saying the face lift is bad. It's cool, but I wonder what the uh........headplates(?) are used for?
Eh? headplates? do u mean smoke deflectors? the definiton is in the name. granted, she does look good like that, too bad they're geting rid of the deflectors and double-chimney, but I think they will keep Gordon looking like he is until the end of Thomas & friends (circa- the END OF TIME!)
The double chimney and german-style smoke deflectors are nice, but not with LNER livery. It ought to be with BR logos and paint if it were to have them.
The line up A1 60163, A2 60532, A3 60103, A4's 60007, 60009, 60019, V2 60800 Green Arrow would also be nice. Obvious choice of line for me would be North Yorkshire Moors, then to keep the LNER theme going, use K4, 61994 Great Marquess and/or K1 62005 on the Whitby's.
I recall her visit to the US in the 1960's, with a bell on her pilot and AAR coupler in lieu of screws & buffer plates.(An odd bit of jewelry for this fine lady, but she handled it gracefully.) I only wish we in the US could return the favor to British rail enthusiasts, maybe loan UP 844 (4-8-4) or another Amrican steamer for runs on the LNER or LMS routes.
I travelling on the Scotsman (York to Scarborough) and it was a fantastic day. Bring some goggles along for looking out the window. It was funny to see the effect she has on people as she goes by, she's a superstar!
What a stupid comment. There is only Flying Scotsman and thats the one in this video. The engine carried them in BR days. My opinion is if the engine has to have them, then it should be in BR livery.
Like it or not, the engine still has presence despite the historical inaccuracy of the livery.
Great video, and as for her whistle - I hear tell that it is a south african chime whistle that was fitted, just behind the smoke deflector.
For me, the apple green livery looks magnificent on her still, and yes, i'd like to see her in single chimney form, but the deflectors make a heck of a difference on the mainline, and I think many drivers would prefer to have them then not at all.
i thought i recognised that whistle, south african chime, it sounds better at lower pressures though and i think she looks better with the smoke deflectors on.
Would someone please explain to me why 4472 has had its Vacumm Brake's Removed and why it has smoke deflectors in the wrong livery? A fantastic locomotive with alot of History, I just wish she could be looked after a little bit better. Am I wrong?
I'm not sure that authentic-ness (if that's not a word, it is now!) is now much of a concern with 4472. After all, what with the number of refits the old girls had, there's probably only a couple of bolts left that are actually original!! And not forget the two tender period...
It was Dr. Marchington that had the vacuum removed. He wanted to run a luxury train service using FS and, later on Bittern. He also had a contract with VSOE to do it. It ran with the deflectors for the aid of the crew and also because the double chimney also caused the soft exhaust. Technically it should of been in Brunswick Green and I'm hoping York will, be keeping to one of their rules, be authentic in looks and livery.
Wow. her timing is really off here. all 4 chuffs should be equal in how they sound as well as interval, and they're not. Obviously not a big enough problem to keep her from putting on an excellent show, however. Really nice video you have here.
This was getting close to the time when she failed just before Railfest. It was the only Railfest event I could attend because of work commitments. It was good to see her but shame she was not in steam. From that moment on she has been in the works since then.
