Winning a battle is a matter of accepting the death (or not being afraid of death). Chechens are protecting their motherland and as far as we can see they have noting left to loose but their lives. Most of the Russian soldiers do not know what they are doing up there, and they have too much to loose comparing to Chechens. Also the Muslim religion encourages them to fight to death. Besides Russian army's modern weapons (but poorly trained soldiers), all seems on behalf of Chechens.
