OH MY GOD! I'm a major Elizabeth Montgomery fan and well I've recently became a Who's the boss fan and I just realized that Katherine Helmond plays Emma! OMFG? FREAK COINCIDENCE? Think of how similar Bewitched and Who's the boss are?? well kinda... You learn something new everyday.
Another (more plausible) theory points a finger at Emma Borden as the real murderer with Lizzie as an accessory. I think the theory has merit, certainly enough for further investigation.
Elizabeth Montgomery! OH MY GOD. That song is stuck in my head, as is the movie. It was such a shock to see cute, sweet Samantha playing a murderess, but I must admit, she did an excellent job. People, if you haven't seen the whole movie, watch it! I am absolutely fascinated by this story now and am hoping to get more info on it. The mystery is still there, because no evidence has ever been found, but my heart tells me it was Lizzie.
@sdavenport1981 Lizzie was far from ugly and she didn't wear make-up. If you notice, Elizabeth Montgomery is wearing lip stick, false eye lashes, eye liner. I'm sure cover-up as well, they all do. They were both very attractive women.
I believe you're right. When Bewitched ended its run in 1972, Elizabeth wanted to do other roles to distance herself from that program. She had done two movies in 1974, A Case of Rape and Mrs. Sundance. The Legend of Lizzie Borden, which came out in 1975, was, I assume, her third movie after Bewitched's end.
@gotch09 She did just about all her roles to get away from Samantha lol. She was tired of being known as Goody 2 shoes. She also like throwing curve balls at the people.
@gotch09 Emma asked Lizzie in the beginning and she then replied ""No Emma I did not".I have'nt seen this movie on tv in years. They bore us to death with other movies, mostly bad.
In the Alfred Hitchcock episode, the younger sister admitted that she killed them...and tried to kill the older sister...the younger sister was then sent away.
The jury found LB not guilty but that doesn't mean the crime remains 'unsolved.' Of course, she killed both her parents, and everyone in Fall River knew/knows it.
@xdarkdaysx Hey! Come on man! This was like the 70's. What were you expecting? Watch the whole movie and you might change your mind. Oh, and listen to the song again. It truly is sick, because it says she gave her father one more slice with the axe. I think it was more personal.
Exceptional protrayal by the lead IMO. Probably, not true to the real story but Montgomery was perfection in her coldness and schematic rendition of dear Lizzie.
@Coyote329 The last scene when she just has that glare is awesome.Best Poker Face around. What an actress. When I first seen this I was amazed she could act that well from just seeing her in a comedy WOW What a range!!! Hollywood missed out on not making Big screen movies with her but oh-well she was great on t.v.
Borden was actually completely ostracized for the rest of her life; she lived in luxury, but isolation.
If you like this film, check out the short version A. Hitchcock made for "Alfred H. Presents;" I forget the name of the episode, but it was really clever!
This is nothing. The Lizzie Bordon murder has nothing on The Marsden Murders which were a devil cult in FR who killed many, many people - read Mortal Remains.
From what I understand, Elizabeth Montgomery and Lizzie Borden were related. Sixth cousins once removed or something like that. I wonder if Elizabeth knew she was playing her own cousin?
YES! Please release this on DVD! I remember it from years ago and it's really quite good. Does anyone know why the *uck it isn't on DVD yet!? Everyone I know who's seen it really liked it...I'm sure it would sell.

Does anyone else notice how Elizabeth slightly nods her head yes as the camera pans around her? Amm I seeing things? I have this on UK VHS tape and viewed it on my huge screen TV and I swear she nods Yes she did it.
This was one of the best TV movies of the Seventies, hands (or hatchets?)down. It offered up one of the most plausible explanations for the absence of blood on Lizzie's clothing, and managed to subtly hint at what may have been a slightly inappropriate relationship between Lizzie and her father.
The casting is incredible- Liz Montgomery bore an uncanny resemblence to Lizzie. Fritz Weaver made Andrew Borden more than just a hapless victim. Flanders as Knowlton, and so on. PLEASE RELEASE on DVD!
she couldn't have done it. someone saw her outside during the murder of andrew. Read the book called Lizzie Didn't Do It. it shows all the flaws in convicting Lizzie.
@teleise3 Lizzie did it. She had the motive and did some very incriminating things both before and after the murders (predicting a "family catastrophe" was about to occur, showing no emotion after the murders, etc.).
People in the 1890s just couldn't believe a Sunday School teacher and daughter of an upstanding middle-class family could commit such a gruesome crime. Adding to that her "damsel in distress" antics during the trial, so she managed to walk.
Although this movie has many omissions and errors, it does a good job of giving the viewer a place to start in trying tounderstand this eternal murder mystery. It makes me laugh when people like you, judge people you have never met, you don't know anything about me, but yet, you carry yourself like you do, grow up.
I remember seeing this when I was 12, this ending and the end of Burnt Offerings gave me chills! The look on Elizabeth's face when she turns around, the lifeless look of "you know, you asked me this question and you're going to have to go to sleep...sometime".
i felt so creeped up after seeing some mini clips of liz borden.tht woman is like a murderess even if she really ain't one..oh n liz-she truly shines!every moment despite acting as an axe murderess!
i have this one! thanks for posting it. for anyone looking to see it on tv, the oxygen channel shows it every now and then - i'm not even a viewer of the channel - just happened to see this movie listed in my onscreen guide one day. liz montgomery is great in this - along with julie harris!
Elizabeth Montgomery and Lizzie Borden were sixth cousins once removed, both descending from 17th-century Massachusetts resident John Luther.
I'm not sure if Liz actually knew she was related to LB or not, but it's certainly interesting that she played her own cousin. Makes this movie even more fascinating, imo.
"yeahtoday," you must've been under a big rock, as DA noted. In the 70s and 80s, Montgomery was classified as "the Queen of Made-for-TV Movies," and also one of the highest paid actresses in the televsision industry. Her "A Case of Rape" was considered a landmark, at the time; and she went on to star in and produce her own ventures, until her sadly premature death. People-wise, she was wonderfully down-to-earth and humorous.
The psychopathic look on Elizabeth Montgomery's face after her sister asked if she did it is an expression of her great talent. What a wonderful woman.
I just learned that Elizabeth Montgomery was somehow related to Lizzie Borden.

Well, when you saw a murder when only 8 years old, things like this show can scare you. There is no perhaps in you being an asshole.

I remember seeing this when I was 12, this ending and the end of Burnt Offerings gave me chills! The look on Elizabeth's face when she turns around, the lifeless look of "you know, you asked me this question and you're going to have to go to sleep...sometime".

wow...didnt know that. are you sure? well anyway...i wonder if she knows the real answer to the mystery - hah, doubt it...

yea i was reading about elizabeth montgomery from the wikipedia and she said she was related to the bordens

DA90027 missive to yeahtoday:
"yeahtoday," you must've been under a big rock, as DA noted. In the 70s and 80s, Montgomery was classified as "the Queen of Made-for-TV Movies," and also one of the highest paid actresses in the televsision industry. Her "A Case of Rape" was considered a landmark, at the time; and she went on to star in and produce her own ventures, until her sadly premature death. People-wise, she was wonderfully down-to-earth and humorous.

Is that Katherine Helmond playing Emma? I've never seen her so young.

Yeah! It was made just a couple of years before she started in "Soap".

The psychopathic look on Elizabeth Montgomery's face after her sister asked if she did it is an expression of her great talent. What a wonderful woman.
