WOW. The invisible giant here is ilayaraja's music. Listen @2:19 to @3:47 In perfect symphony with Kamal's acting and makes it stand out all the more. In one minute+, the music brings out many types of sadness and also foreshadows Kamal's eventual loss and desolation at the end. (Notice how the music abruptly ends just like sridevi's abrupt disappearance from Kamal's life) Also notice the segments where he doesn't use any music & lets kamal play out his act. Genius at it's height.

Just mesmerized with the acting of SIR Kamal Hasan we should say........should be shown in the other parts of this world i guess.......audience will like it for sure.......
please someone make a sequel of this film in which Somu try to find her and in the end they meet. Someone should make it just to please audience...i'm sure people will definitely find it interesting and watch the sequel too....

For almost 90% of the film Sridevi stole almost every scene she was in with Kamal but then in climax she recovers from madness and her memory gets restored to her real self which was that of a modern educated cold hearted female and Kamal's character who sacrificed so much for her is just casually forgotten by her and when sridevi looks at him as if he is mad its too much for him to bear and then the train goes away kamal has lost his sanity and sits on the bench! very very sad!

when of course she was shown to gain her consciousness and memory in totality. To me that was her best role in her professional acting career which has etched her name right in to that rare list of female protagonist luminaries who gained their prominence and iconic status in Indian film industry through their acting skills rather than the cheap displays of their skins.
No doubt a memorable and knock out performance from this talented artist and deservedly stole the major portion of credit from his female protagonist colleague in the climax.
Sridevi, on the other side, do deserve a huge applause from the viewer and critic after her amazing histrionic display of a complex role of a woman who accidentally suffered from an amnesiac cum autistic disorder and later had a complete control on her difficult role right in the end
Sridevi dominated the major chunks of this memorable movie or I must say completely overshadowed the performances of her colleagues until right in the end the main protagonist Kamal came up with this unexpectedly awesome and thundering display of emoting skills, which was full of emotionalism, desperation and anxiety immersed in lunatic antics where later he dejectedly sat down on the platform bench to rue his fate and the eventual calamity which overtook his whole demeanour.

Well, I know Kamal is versatile actor but plot of the movie lapsed into mawkish sentimentality near the end;In reality, I hardly think any die-hard lovers would do such a thing as Kamal in this movie-ya of course it's just a movie isn't it? WTF Sridevi said to him? "porukki' screw that bitch, get another!
the acting in this movie of sridevi is outstanding.. the best of her career.. but kamal takes off all that credit completely from her just in this ten min climax!! interestingly this movie is the last move she acted against kamal.,.. it is said she was upset for not recieving due credit to the role she played(infact she did)...they had some best of classics together in both tamil & telugu...
let alone National award, Sridevi did NOT recieve one SINGLE award for Sadma/Moondram Pirai. She was nominated for Sadma but that year Shabana Azmi had 4 nominations, 5th being Sridevi for Sadma and Shabana deservingly got the award but really sad for Sridevi not getting any award for a perforamnce like this.

I remember seeing only seeing the ending of this movie as a kid because the start had been cut out. Now I watch it years later and it's such a sad but beautiful scene.
For this scene the legend Kamal hassan won the national award...or else would have gone to Sridevi for the movie...but Kamal did an outstanding job at the end to snatch the award from Sridevi.....
It's nice. But its too melodramatic, esp. Kamal's acting, all that falling down so many times. Sridevi looks gorgeous as always. Watched it hoping for something spectacular, but was disappointed by the la ck of subtlety. Sorry, only a personal opinion.

@killintymm That's quite true, with the rare exception of say a Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Abhimaan!), or earlier on, Bimal Roy and Guru Dutt. It would be interesting to see how cinema will be if it merges the emotional strength of that era with the subtle portrayal of the modern era.

This movie was absolutely brilliant...I cried so much when I watched it a good feew years back. Brilliant acting by both of them. this scene just made me cry again...so SAD!!!
How do you rate Kamal's performance in this movie. I would consider this the best acting ever in the Indian cinema. I had watched Kamal earlier in the North South Love story and was just brilliant, Rathi included but this scene just took my breath away.
This scene is really good , no doubt but one wonders why an acrobatic and young person like him can not jump on the train and come face to face to sridevi and her parents , but it is a movie afterall, a hero can do so many things but can not small things sometimes

It is actors like Kamal Hasan who make language irrelevant. Whatever your mother tongue it doesn't matter you can watch the tamil version 'Moondram Pirai' the climax is awesome. The hindi version came very close and was exceptional too. Kamal and Sridevi combo rock.

Watch out the tamil version 'Moondram Pirai Climax".. its 100% by the actor... especialy at 7:23 when he hits the pillar... he did it jst really.. but hindi version u can see him expecting the hit.
I don't agree. Kamal's expression when he is just about to hit the pillar is what you feel when suddenly something comes into your line of vision and you are probably about to hit it. Just perfect. Another highlight in this entire scene!
Amitabh and Naseer are my fav actors but this one scene .... this one scene alone puts Kamal Hassan ahead of them. You really have to watch the whole movie to understand the true dynamics of this climax scene. Absolute masterclass in acting.

It was free night in our hostel ( a night without study hours ) when this movie was aired on DD as usual we were in mess watching the only piece of enatrtainement..and as usual it was time pass but not this last ten minutes ..i never ever imagined that those ten minutes would leave a permanent scar on my heart ... i think that whole night i could hardly sleep ..I wish that day was not a free night at alllllllllllllllllllll..................

They should remake the moonram pirai again in Tamil..with an added scene after the climax... where somehow, sridevi's character realises what all he had done for her.
Life doesn't always consist of happy endings. This movie reflects the intricacies of life. I am sure everyone would have preferred a happy end, but dont you think the entire movie would be spoiled if they altered the climax? The novelty lies in the ending:)

I remember seeing only seeing the ending of this movie as a kid because the start had been cut out. Now I watch it years later and it's such a sad but beautiful scene.

For this scene the legend Kamal hassan won the national award...or else would have gone to Sridevi for the movie...but Kamal did an outstanding job at the end to snatch the award from Sridevi.....

It's nice. But its too melodramatic, esp. Kamal's acting, all that falling down so many times. Sridevi looks gorgeous as always. Watched it hoping for something spectacular, but was disappointed by the la ck of subtlety. Sorry, only a personal opinion.

@killintymm That's quite true, with the rare exception of say a Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Abhimaan!), or earlier on, Bimal Roy and Guru Dutt. It would be interesting to see how cinema will be if it merges the emotional strength of that era with the subtle portrayal of the modern era.

How do you rate Kamal's performance in this movie. I would consider this the best acting ever in the Indian cinema. I had watched Kamal earlier in the North South Love story and was just brilliant, Rathi included but this scene just took my breath away.

This scene is really good , no doubt but one wonders why an acrobatic and young person like him can not jump on the train and come face to face to sridevi and her parents , but it is a movie afterall, a hero can do so many things but can not small things sometimes

What? i have never seen Kamal's movies and wonder how could i have missed an actor of this caliber. Hindi films did not even give him his due and hope he comes back to hindi to enthrall us with his superb performances.

It is actors like Kamal Hasan who make language irrelevant. Whatever your mother tongue it doesn't matter you can watch the tamil version 'Moondram Pirai' the climax is awesome. The hindi version came very close and was exceptional too. Kamal and Sridevi combo rock.

forget your six packs , great dancing ability, tall dark handsome etc , the ideal starson category . the ideal lady puller. HERE was or still is an actor with perfectly normal Indian looks , but by god what a guy and what talents he preserves within. i wished he carried on doing more hindi movies.. KAMAL HASSAN ZINDABAD

Watch out the tamil version 'Moondram Pirai Climax".. its 100% by the actor... especialy at 7:23 when he hits the pillar... he did it jst really.. but hindi version u can see him expecting the hit.

I don't agree. Kamal's expression when he is just about to hit the pillar is what you feel when suddenly something comes into your line of vision and you are probably about to hit it. Just perfect. Another highlight in this entire scene!

Amitabh and Naseer are my fav actors but this one scene .... this one scene alone puts Kamal Hassan ahead of them. You really have to watch the whole movie to understand the true dynamics of this climax scene. Absolute masterclass in acting.

It was free night in our hostel ( a night without study hours ) when this movie was aired on DD as usual we were in mess watching the only piece of enatrtainement..and as usual it was time pass but not this last ten minutes ..i never ever imagined that those ten minutes would leave a permanent scar on my heart ... i think that whole night i could hardly sleep ..I wish that day was not a free night at alllllllllllllllllllll..................

Life doesn't always consist of happy endings. This movie reflects the intricacies of life. I am sure everyone would have preferred a happy end, but dont you think the entire movie would be spoiled if they altered the climax? The novelty lies in the ending:)

@THUGSTERZZZ : after d accident, she goes into coma,..bt whn she regains her conciousness, she is unable to recollect anything (amnesia). So in d end, when she's cured and she fully regains her memory, d entire tym she spent wid somu (kamal hassan) is blacked out.....she jus takes him 2 b sm lunatic beggar....n dats wat d sad part is.....
