  • Never released cuz? Is Ry high?

  • @TubeMistake Don't know why it wasn't released, but your conjecture is irrelevant. Relax and if he was, are you taking names Mother Theresa?

  • FUUUK I LOVE YOU RY COODER !!! THIS is the BEST guitar intro ive ever KNOWN !!! MEAAAAAN MACHINE !!!!!! :)

  • Jim Keltner Drummie The Best

  • I first went to the Catalyst in 1974...would play chess all afternoon while nursing a Coke. There was a small stage where local musicians could set up and play for what they could collect by passing the hat.The place changed when the owners turned it into a major music venue after 1980.Old timers like myself think it lost its charm. The place was wrecked in Loma Prieta. It was rebuilt and remains a major venue.Santa Cruz is still a very special place where the 1960s attitude never really ended.

  • the definite classic collection of "it All" this recording should be ...in it's full version should be DVD availible to everybody everywhere ,anytime ...even inter terrestials would enjoy this ...if they have ears ?...

  • OH YEAH !!!

  • If I was born for one sole purpose to learn the first 37 seconds of this song and die the next day, I would die a happy man.

  • I guess as Blacks they would have a fair amount of knowledge about chain gangs being Negros have such a high crime rate.

  • @MrBEB123 What an odd thing to say. You must be hoping to be elected county sheriff someday somewhere and perhaps hope to become a rope farmer or something like that. May God bless you and send you a few meaningful life experiences .

  • Beautifull! thank you for sharing!

  • Question ! is this song a cover of an old song or is it rye cooders or bobby kings, help would be appreciated .

  • @briantime11 this is a cover of a song by soul legend Sam Cooke. check him out!

  • at :20 he gets touched by the holy spirit, that's why that riff is ridiculously dope

  • Wonderful!

  • Is that Flaco Jiménez on the accordian? Man, this concert had ALL kinds of people there!

  • King has a great voice. I especially love his bit on Springsteen's "Man's Job."

  • haven't listened to this for a while, forgot how good how it was

  • Wow ! I've always loved Ry Cooder. Haven't listened to him in a while. Now I know what I've been missing. He is obviously an extremely talented musician, but his real draw is in the fact that his soul drips from him when he plays! Also, his ability to bring different cultures together to share in the experience of playing beautiful music shows his true humanity. A great human being and great musician !

  • This has been around since December 2007 and this is the first time I've seen this vid. Geez! How come there only 213,286 views the 6-14-11 when there should have been over a million by now.

  • DONT GET ME WRONG I LOVE RY COODER'S GUITAR !1 BUT I'M HERE FOR MR. BOBBY FUCKING KING !!

  • This is the best ever version of this song/ tres tres bonne

  • woohooo, nice video

  • ry knows where the METERS come from. this is the best of the best, and will never happen again. it don't get any better than this.

  • Dude with the conga is Gangsta!!!

  • drums lacking a bit

  • yup....Flaco Jiminez on accordeon

  • if it gets much better than this, they'd have to outlaw it.

  • if it got much better than this, they'd have to outlaw it

  • they should have a double thumbs up for this and all of ry's stuff

  • I love the "Archie Brownlee" scream at the end...BRAVO! What a great performance.

  • Probably one of the best performances outside of Sam Cooke. I love the slow beat. It's good when a performer can make a song his own and separate himself from the original.

  • wow what a great group! incredible combination of great instrumentalists and vocalists

  • That must be the great Flaco Jimenez on accordian. Brilliant stuff. Ry Cooder always as ever great,

  • This is real music

  • aw how mellow is that music!totally brilliant!

  • i haven't heard many other versions of Chan Gang and this isn't Sam Cooke but it's OK

  • THIS IS BEAUTIFUL. So soulful....

  • what great singers

  • I listen to this everyday - and sing along with them, love this rendition of this classic Sam Cooke tune. Just beautiful.

These are truly awesome artists, every one of them.

Wonder if there would be a chance of Ry getting together with them again.

  • Wonderful. Real music. Thanks for posting!!!

  • This video was recorded at Santa Cruz on 1987. A magical version !!!

  • I think Ry Cooder's "Bob Till You Drop" was the 1st Digital album...CD ... something?...help me out ... Great Album!!!

My mama loved this song when I was a kid... Sam Cooke.

  • believe it or not but Bobby King goes to our church. NOT A LIE!!!!

  • @airsoftdudem16 Bobby does more than just go to church. He is one of the lead singers @ Refuge Temple Ministries in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

  • @ministeralexander He is full of feeling and soul, such a great and gifted singer.

  • One word magnificent

    OneLove

  • One of my favourite performances by anyone, ever. I could listen to this on repeat for hours.

  • I was at this show.. At the Catalyst in Santa Cruz.. Ry Cooder did 13 nighs in a row to prepare to record "Get Rhythm" with this band... This was the mini tour of the bay area to get the band ready to record. The first night of the tour was at Wolfgang's in San Francisco. What a great bunch of shows.

  • THANK YOU RY AND THE BAND....SWEET EMOTIONS AGAIN FROM *THE-MAN* And Bobby sings from his S-O-U-L THANKS MATES! :-)

  • watching these guys and listening to their wonderful music and singing it gives you a happy feeling inside - despite the sad message of their words - awesome !!!!

  • I want this complete movie bad...it's not available in the states, does anyone in Europe know how I can obtain a copy...DVD or Video Tape?....One of the most soulful things I've seen...great great stuff......

  • @harhar58 wish I could find a copy of it also.

  • @mbroders Thanks so much for letting us all know who the group members are in this vid. The forgotten folks in all these vids are those who make the sound of the song great. Who are the band members, if you know?

  • @rogerrrubin It's in the video notes - click on "Show more"

  • @mbroders "more"-wow! You got your thumb on the pulse, my friend. One of the few that knows the members of the band they upload. Good job! Together they nailed this song. I am going to start nailing the "more" click and on this one the thumbs up click twice. Thanks for standing by your vid.

  • haha im trying to find out the same thing !

  • he really stands out doesn't he! i wish we still made music like this these days...can't belive im seeing Ry tomorow! ill let him know you said hi ;)

  • @zillpick The gentleman on the far right with the bongos is Willie Greene Jr., part of the regular Ry Cooder choir.

  • @zillpick Me and my buddy walked outta the Ritz in lower Manhattan with Willie about 3am one morning. Snow falling and a wonderful night - one of so many that Ry has given me in this lifetime. John Hiatt played that evening with him in 1981

  • Nice touch also with Flaco Jiminez on accordian. What a collection of musicians! Ry Cooder has been a great presence on the music scene for decades. Truly an inspiration for what a human being can do.

  • I thank the great genderless creator in the heavens for music like this with sooooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuul.

    Thanks for posting it too.

  • gender less maybe but god is still black oh yeah

  • ry cooder is the man........the band and singer rule

  • Groovy - with an own style.

I think, Sam would like it too

  • My daddy used to sing this song to me when I was little so I am very familiar with the song but this version is so different I almost didn't recognize it. lol Love it tho!

  • when my bro was 15 he was thrown into a chain gang. for 'joy-riding' cars.. putting them back, unharmed, where he found them.. unharmed, all happened during the middle of the nite.. Look what happens now.. hard time for a year for murder-- is a pc and a fitness program. and we wonder why we have more people in prison than anyone. no hard time for anything. GREAT SONG, thank you for sharing it.. I will always love remembering many times when I still had my brother.

  • Broucku,im trying to get back home.

  • just awsome!!!!

  • Please...don't fall off the dock!

  • This is good as hell!

  • oh joy. i forgive bobby king interrupting the intro,. he had to after all, but what an intro.

  • Working on the chain.

    That's the sound.

  • Where can i get a recording of this???

  • The new Otis? Hell no! Yes he has a great voice but not even close to Otis.

I can't believe you would even say that

  • Does anyone know if this is on a CD?

And if so, what is the name of the album?

  • Comment removed

  • Super, Bobby King is the new Otis Redding..... Too much soul!!! Just great!

  • This is lovely and cool..Thanks Molly for sharing this with me..

  • Ye I'm feeling alright lol

  • The opening licks Ry plays are just so tasty. Nothing flashy, nothing wasted - just subtle note and phrasing changes that evoke a great mood for the song that follows. The boy can play.

  • oh, I love this song - and THIS VERSION.

Thank you, it´s soo great. *****

  • For anybody who is interested Bobby is a Gospel singer now. He is in his 60's now and is

even more amazing now than when this was done. He is my husband's Uncle and I am going to

see if he will let me make a couple videos for his fans to be able to hear his new stuff.

Send me a message and let me know if you would like to hear his new music.

  • It doesnt surprise me that he's singing Gospel now. He took it to church @ the end. He has an amazing voice. I would love to hear some of his music.

  • yah i would like to...

  • please please do ask.. i sure hope to god that he says yes and lets everyone see what hes still got!

  • Yes, please! I saw him with Ry in London at Hammersmith Odeon, many years ago - the best gigs of my life :)

  • Yes, I'd love to hear him singing gospel. He has such a wonderful voice.

  • GREAT!! So easy goin'

  • this is real music made by real musicians for real people. Turn on Mtv and you enter a strange, depraved bizzarro world.

  • what they gotta sing for?

  • Anybody know what that tuning is Ry is using? The key sounds like C, but he has a capo on the second fret.

  • Don't hold your breath, don't copy and paste anything, don't finish reading stupid superstitious nonsense- just sit and listen to the sound of the men working on the chain...gang!

  • Ry Cooder, one of my favorites. Always puts on a good performance.

  • Superb! Absolute top quality stuff!

  • Just great! Thanks for posting!

  • *****!!!

  • I´ve found it on a sampler of soulmusic and since them I like it. This live one (more slowly) is much better, thank, I love it

  • Makes me feel alive!

  • you have made my day. I used to have this in a VHS I taped from the TV, but it wore out from being played so often. I have looked everywhere to try to get this WONDERFUL recording.

PLEASE where is the DVD available??????

  • it's from sam cooke .i have this record on vynil

  • Soory. Just rembered it was Samm Cooke.

  • Does anyone remember who performed the early 1960's version of this song?

  • It was Jim Ford.

  • Wow!

  • From what I've read, it hasn't been released in the United States for some reason or another. And searching ebay and torrents yielded no results either.

    A damn shame, really.

  • Where can I get this concert on DVD?

  • THE song of my youth :)

  • KILLER!

  • Ry is STILL incredible !!!!!!

  • Does anyone know how to get a copy of this concert on DVD?
