Hey all, I'm thining about starting as a leasehand. I'm in Toronto and still need to get my H2S Alive. Should I just drive out to Nisku over 3 days and just take the course there, then look for a job? I spoke with Precisions Drilling last week and they said there are lots of jobs right now. Also, I'm 39, fit and energetic, like hard dirty work and don't do drugs(but I like my beer, no booze). Someone said I'm too old to do this. Is that true?

@dkolewaski Start wage is usually around 25$ a hour with no education and on top of that getting 140$ a day not in camp and 50$ a day in camp. Most of the time you can fill your diesel trucks up for free on the rigs too and the majority of companies pay for your flights aswell as any courses you need like heavy equipment or your az-dz(airbrake). I don't know how much money you make where you can tell people they make peanuts when most roughys bring in 7000+ a month let alone a paycheck.

Im on a topdrive rig and we do alot more then just run a dope brush lol. Alot of my friends that work for PD all work on those automated rigs...doubles are getting to be the easy rigs now, they don't even throw slips or tongs. How boring! I'd much rather bust a nut then stand there with a dope brush in my hand for 12 hours...

actully my good man, the "time-on" "time" off" is 21/on 7 off, and the minimum "tickets" here in Canada that they will look at is H2S ALIVE, WHMIS, FIRST AID, TDG, and a drivers abstract (unless it is a "fly-in" camp job) good luck and stay safe out there. Oh and yes Nabors Drilling is hiring !!!

You stay in Camp if the job requires it man, I worked on the Yukon border all winter on Precision drilling rig 522, jobs in the bush require you to stay in camp, not always in a hotel. depends on where your drilling.
Nisku Alberta has many of the offices for companys such as Precision Drilling, Ensign, Beaver, Extreme and Trinidad....and a few more. Apply at any of them, they are all looking for hands this time of year.
Unless you got 20 years plus as a DD, and I got some serious doubts, you wouldn't come close to that kind of money. Guys like you give guys like me who do have 20 years plus as DD a bad name. Im on a topdrive rig and we do alot more then just run a dope brush lol. Alot of my friends that work for PD all work on those automated rigs...doubles are getting to be the easy rigs now, they don't even throw slips or tongs. How boring! I'd much rather bust a nut then stand there with a dope brush in my hand for 12 hours...

well to the comment about the prefabs.. ive worked in northern canada for 7 years.. some winters ive worked 12 hour in -50c with windchill of -65 70.... that shit freezes and exposed skin in seconds. floor has to be seme heated to keep water and mud from freezing on it. o yea and anyone can run a dope brush on a top drive rig.

actully my good man, the "time-on" "time" off" is 21/on 7 off, and the minimum "tickets" here in Canada that they will look at is H2S ALIVE, WHMIS, FIRST AID, TDG, and a drivers abstract (unless it is a "fly-in" camp job) good luck and stay safe out there. Oh and yes Nabors Drilling is hiring !!!

Leasehand makes $26/hr, roughneck makes $27/hr, not sure about everyone else as I am a driller.. As for tips where you from?

You stay in Camp if the job requires it man, I worked on the Yukon border all winter on Precision drilling rig 522, jobs in the bush require you to stay in camp, not always in a hotel. depends on where your drilling.

Ruffy's here make somewhere around 23 an hour. I make 1500 a day for day rate plus 100/day per diem, and 1.25 a mile for driving miles.

ahh no degrees..go to school in nisku(rig training/safety training...yeah the pay is great be prepared to work with some losers and that means grade 7 education,been in jail idiots...go work on a rig without them and life will be good!!my advise stick to school and go do something better!!
