@minskbelarus That is a perfectly logical thought, I watched a piece from an old Harry James film, and said to myself, no way am I even going to come close. He played his number fast and precise similar to what we heard on this video. But put it in perspective, and always remember, they are the all time greats and this guy Wynton is right in that category.
amazing playing!!! the other trumpet guys look bored/irritated though as if wynton hogged the spotlight and they didn't get to solo much that night. just look again carefully
I have spent 31 years as a trumpeter moaning about all the Christmas and birthday presents of Satchmo's greatest hits compilations - I was way too cool to be into Louis Armstrong - more like Miles and Chet. I'm sort of glad I never went there directly - because I now have the pleasure of discovering just how fantastic he really was. Congratulations Wynton Marsalis for leading me down this path.
I have seen Wynton perform in just about every imaginable context and he is positively amazing in ALL of them. i have been a round quite a while and have listened to a great many fine performances from almost all of the great stars of the trumpet from Maurice Andre' to Maynard Ferguson. Wynton Marsalis just very well be the greatest trumpet player to have ever lived. Who has ever played this instrument with his unique range of performance abilities???
There arn't enough superlatives in the English language to describe just how good Wynton is. There are plenty of great players both past and present but IMO Wynton tops them all. Simply amazing!!
i thought this would be cool because this guy used to be on tv with Jay Leno. he cant even play the big horn anymore. and the drummer only plays one drum for the first part and his set is so small. neil pert has way bigger set.kenny g, who set the guiness record for longest note, has a clarinet made out of gold and the guy playing the big violin doesnt even have a bow.
Thanks for uploading shiny stockings. I know it's alot to ask, but this concert is one of my favourite concerts ever! If you could upload the whole 2002 LCJO proms concert, you don't know how thankful I'll be!!
Wow !! Thanks for posting this. How did you get hold of the films ?
By the way...could you upload the tune "dreaming on a washboard" pleeeease ? Cant remember which show it was from but it was the last song of a set i think.. Herlin Riley is the man !!!
A lot of people seem to love this concert and I'm happy to upload your request. As Dreaming on a washboard lasts over 13mins, I had to upload it in 2. parts. Maybe you can join them together in a playlist? Cheers, Gordon
@largsfairlie Hey buddy do you know what kinda mouthpiece he using on here, lol i need to get one(although i doubt itll make me any better XD ) -thanks
man, he just plays like a well oiled machine! not one slip up.. and then the drummer is the icing on the cake... this is just THE perfect performance of cherokee... i watch this so much and find something better about it each time
Thanks so much for posting this. It used to be up and was one of my favourite videos and I was quite disappointed when it was taken down. Great to see it back!

At 1:56 where the drummers lays it down so funky... reminds me of "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down" by Miles Davis. Wynton really is a master.

is he using prana 7?? of prana 3??
neody14 2 years ago
Not a Prana at all. Prana didn't exist in 2002, I'm fairly sure. Probably a customized 993, I would guess. He plays a Prana 3 know, as far as I know.
