this is a sound that may sound uneven and disorganized to the modern ear that is used to synthesized, fake, pop music, but to the true music enthusiast, this is beautiful. you go, ian mccool!
probably have not seen this video since it used to be on MTV before MTV dropped it's links to broadcast independant TV stations (mine was KTVU 2 Oakland) back in the mid 80's.
I still think of what Rik of the Young ones said in the episode "sick" : "that's it, I'm writing a letter!---Dear Echo..."
"i heard of this band but never listened until i saw Donnie Darko. i knew who it was instantly but never heard thier music. yes, i live under a rock. i really like thier music."
I just woke up from a dream...and this was music was playing in the dream...and there was some connection to Steppenwolf...Herman Hesse or the band...not sure...anybody have an insight? Or am I just dreaming...
What I love about this is it's whole honesty and rawness. It is just briliant, and Ian's voice echoes to me something that is so special to the world! He offers something about historical human life that no-one else ever talks about. To me it is about our new romantic and probably begininnig of human nature. Very passionate stuff!
This live version is by far the best. Back in the days when everything was pop Echo stood out for its semi-acoustic approach in songs like this one. Real music for real people. Siberdia is a proof that they will go on for decades to come.
@HarryUpHarry Yeah, kids nowadays are really missing out "idolizing" unreachable international superstars instead of liking the "real deal"... A bit sad really.
@geezaweebrek Because in the 80s you had nothing better to do after coming home from school than to listen to the radio or play some records, maybe watch some MTV or read a book.
Nowadays everyone's so busy with gaming, phones, millions of things to do on Internet that music just isn't that big of a deal anymore
sad, but true... i'm 1 of the rare people who still come home just to listen to much... after driving around listening to music ;-) TV bores me... music is my life!!!
This version is so much better than the sold studio version. I love how he sings it in the lives videos, so much more real and gives it a kick but this one is great too.
Maybe it is. However, what about The Queen Is Dead By The Smiths, The Stone Roses by The Stone roses, Pornography by The Cure, Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth, Murmur by R.E.M., & Apettite For Destruction by Guns N' Roses?
The 1980's are not as awful as many people think!
Well... Ocean Rain by Echo & The Bunnymen is a beautiful album, anyway! And this song is simply awesome! A master piece!
I have some Smiths albums, but not "The Queen is Dead"... yet. I don't have any Stone Roses or Sonic Youth. I have a few Cure albums, R.E.M., and not "Appetite"
Life's Rich Pageant is (IMO) the BEST REM album...some of their best work that noone remembers...I believe...these days...coyahoga..swan swan hummingbird
minus the hairstyles and whatnot of the 80's, i hope there'll be a resurgence of british bands like Echo, The Smiths, Lloyd Cole, etc. cos bands these days except for Suede and Oasis just don't have the it.
A good honest version, with dodgy McCulloch live vocals unairbrushed at the end. Let the rest of us try to do better, it's the talent and enthusiasm that shine through.
You're living proof at my finger tips is still the coolest line in any song
