  • that bass must be hard because there's no frets.

  • Not really. Beginners usually use little strips of tape as fretmarkers, but after a short while one develops the ear to hear where the note is and then the tape is not needed.

  • It's the most difficult fretless instrument though. There is more room for intonation errors due to the length of the fingerboard.

  • Are you kidding? The upright is one of the hardest instruments to get a competency level at.

    Tape? If you finger is a 16th of an inch either way of the tape your playing badly out of tune...

    Sure eventually you develop an ear for what a note is, but knowing what a note is after you've played it does not help when you have not yet heard the note your about to play.

    I play classical piano, and it is very hard... But to become competent at piano, guitar or sax is easy compared to contrabass.
