Not really. Beginners usually use little strips of tape as fretmarkers, but after a short while one develops the ear to hear where the note is and then the tape is not needed.

It's the most difficult fretless instrument though. There is more room for intonation errors due to the length of the fingerboard.

Are you kidding? The upright is one of the hardest instruments to get a competency level at.

Tape? If you finger is a 16th of an inch either way of the tape your playing badly out of tune...

Sure eventually you develop an ear for what a note is, but knowing what a note is after you've played it does not help when you have not yet heard the note your about to play.

I play classical piano, and it is very hard... But to become competent at piano, guitar or sax is easy compared to contrabass.
