Great games like that are no longer made. The poetic voice-acting, the Shakespearean dialogues, the deep and meaningful story revolving around the most humane question of free will... it is all replaced by blood, boobs and tetris-like action. As sad as the fate of Nosgoth.
@Marbles194 I believe that the quality and the resolution was definitely better in Defiance, but what SR2 has on its side is the great character designs. I like a lot more how Raziel is portrayed here than how he is in Defiance.
I remember in Soul Reaver 1 there was a cutscene when you looked through a portal in the Chronoplast of Raziel reaving Ariel's soul, the reaver turning yellow, but i've read on a website that there were supposed to be as many reavers as glyphs in sr1 and that Ariel's soul would imbue them all, but obviously they went in another direction.
So, watching Ariel's facial expressions, she seems surprised when Raziel speaks, which implies she didn't realize he was there. Which begs the question....who was she talking to? Does she just randomly monologue about Kain and her past even when no one is around? I suppose there are worse ways to pass the time, but still...
I love this series! But boy, time travel sure does give a headache ^^; I wonder somethin' though, in Defiance, where was future Kain gonna go since he had the perfected Soul Reaver, cured of corruption, and that "bitter taste" of hope.
@DeathSpawn666 Exactly, but Blood Omen 2 is just his younger self, where would the future Kain go to now that he's healed? Even he mentioned with the right moves it may be possible to restore the world, but can never give it back its innocence.
@combatmaster "I wonder somethin' though, in Defiance, where was future Kain gonna go since he had the perfected Soul Reaver, cured of corruption, and that "bitter taste" of hope." I can only speak for myself, but if I was Kain my next move would be to seek understanding of the pillars, specifically what it is about them that ties the health and vitality of the world to their purity. Then I'd try to find a way to remove that dependence so that the world can thrive with or without the pillars.
@nothri The Pillars were created by the Ancients to banish the Hylden to an alternate dimension. But in SR2, is was shown the Elder God was positioned beneath the Pillars, which Raziel admitted looking like he tore the Pillars down himself. In Defiance Raziel absorbed the souls of the original Ancient Guardians, so there goes that way finding answers out the window. The Pillars held the poison of that dimension back, with the binding broken, it's seeping into the land.
@combatmaster "In Defiance Raziel absorbed the souls of the original Ancient Guardians, so there goes that way finding answers out the window." Fortunately, we have other methods at our disposal. For example, I understand there are several timestreaming chambers left strewn about the countryside who's owner only recently died....and as luck would have future Kain spent eons mastering such devices when he discovered the chronoplast.
@nothri True that, if time travel has taught us anything it's that the dead can still speak in an era where they are alive but it can also trace a freaky destiny. Like murdering your human self for example. lol
Jeez, Raziel appears to be quite the sadist in this scene. In his argument with Ariel, he keeps attacking her with all the horrible things that she made Kain do, and even messes her up when he claims that Kain's sacrifice wouldn't help anything.
She's already being tortured enough, Raziel. Cut the poor lady some slack.
i wonder where ariel at the end of the cut scence because i when i first played this game move back to the material realm to is if see moved back there but she didn't so if she isn't in either realm where did see go.(because from what i understand is that she can't move to far from the pillars, but i could be wrong)
What is the story behind Ariel? So she was a pillar gardian who made kain into a vampire and then she betrayed the rest of the pillar gardians now kain is the last one?
She was the Balance Guardian, whom Nupraptor was in love with. She was murdered, and at that moment Kain was born as the new Balance Guardian to take her place. Nupraptor found her dead and went insane with grief, his insanity spread throughout the circle (as they are all connected) and corrupted them all, Kain included, and the pillars fell into ruin. This was the plan devised by the Hylden, to allow for their freedom when the pillars eventually fell.
Mortanius saw their plan unfolding, recognized it for what it was, and in a moment of clarity, had Kain assassinated so that he could be raised as a vampire, then sent him on his quest to destroy the Circle, so that new guardians could be born. It was Mortanius' belief that Kain would see what had to be done to restore the pillars and, after killing the rest of the circle, take his own life, too.
Moebius saw this, too, and engineered the near destruction of the vampire race, leaving Kain as the last guardian, and also the last vampire. If Kain were to take his own life, he'd be ensuring the extinction of the vampires, which Moebius desired. Kain, of course, refused the sacrifice, letting the pillars fall into decay, and built his empire upon their ashes.
It was the reverse, actually - the pillars exploded at the moment of Kain's choice not to sacrifice himself, which more or less freed the Hylden, allowing the Hylden Lord to possess Janos.
Janos was the "greatest vampire to have ever existed", to quote Kain in Blood Omen 1 (upon finding his first Heart of Darkness). Janos possessed the blood reaver (after it was forged by Vorador) but not the soul reaver (as it didn't become the soul reaver until after Kain acquired it (though technically it was 500 years *before* he acquired it - isn't time travel grand?)
@leondusfim I dont see how Janos could be more powerful than Kain. BO2 Kain beat the Sarafan Lord, but the SL defeated Janos. Also, Raziel pretty much defeated Janos in their battle in defiance. And future Kain is more powerful than BO2 Kain. Janos is definitely more powerful than BO1 Kain. Janos was the greatest vampire to have ever existed...was is the keyword....until Kain came along.
actually, only one powerful Hylden posseses Janos, the main antagonist of Blood Omen 2 (the Sarafan Lord). This guy however, was the same Hylden possesing Mortanius, by this means, he started the "down with the pillars" plan. At the end of Blood Omen 1, after Kain kills Mortanius, the Hylden inside takes control of the corpse, and gives Kain another battle. After he is defeated, he leaves the body, and as the Pillars collapse, he manages to enter Janos, who was weak because of the cataclysm
Ariel is the Guardian of Balance. Evil forces corrupted the circle, and Kain needs to die so she can be free and a new Balance guardian can be born. Mortanius, guard of the pillar of Death, was the one that turned Kain into a vampire in the first game (Blood Omen) so Kain could get revenge on some thugs that killed him when he was a human noble. I suggest looking up the back story online, because there's looots more to it.
Well if you think about it, SR 1 was way in the future compared to this scene. Later she's had time to cope with her imprisonment at the pillars and probably came to terms with it. That's probably why she helped Raziel in SR 1. Dunno for sure, that's just my opinion.
well, he actually was originally designed to be. but the original SR1 couldnt be finished in time, so they used the chronoplast scene to leave it in a "to be continued" but as SR2 was made, the plot began to change drastically, getting kain out of the villain side, and making the Elder God the great manipulating enemy.
Interesting how Ariel acts towards Raziel in each installment. In Soul Reaver she was a kind and beneficial ally whom would give him counsel on the next enemy would face. In Soul Reaver 2 she seems so introverted, melancholic, and doesn't want anything to do with Raziel. In Defiance, she's arrogant and rude, though she does grant him the answers he requires at the time, in the end she's nice again and purifies the reaver with her own spirit.
Guess it's all about the time zone she meets him in.
I believe so too. Ariel is the most mysterious character of all. I suppose she was so deeply in tune with Nosgoth's self, that she was a direct expression of the essence around her. As long as Nosgoth decayed, so she turned into a sad and lonely spirit, clinging to false hopes and forgotten hatreds. I loved his words when Raziel meets her at the Pillars in Defiance. And I loved her even more when I saw her whole and pure in the Reaver Forge. D.R.
Definitely! Raziel has some of the coolest dialogue, especially how he acted so nonchalant around Ariel in Defiance ^_^ I loved the Spirit Forge. I was worried about the prophetic portals in Soul Reaver 1 regarding Raziel striking Ariel down. I was so much more satisfied with the gentle hand gesture Defiance produced.
Something yet troubles me... in this installment, Raziel seems to have been much more aware of his path and the fate of Nosgoth. He reaches a level of understanding and wisdom so practical and deep... And yet, in Defiance, that is rather lost. He acts impulsively and is heedless in many occasions. He even made some interestingly correct assumptions about the collapse of the Pillars, which in Defiance are no longer part of his speech, for example. Was it the change from Vampire to Hylden concepts
In the main storyline, which made that kind of fall possible?
Perhaps the evolution of the characters is much more complex than we pressumed. Perhaps the eternity of imprisonment he endured with the Elder God, distorted his judgment and he could no longer summon the ideas he had previously shaped in his mind while he traversed through Nosgoth in SR2. Perhaps he was just too confused to believe those things anymore. D.R.
I think the recklessness he presented in Defiance was a result of his own confusion about himself and his place in everything that was happening, and his being tired of seemingly always being a pawn. I think he was just tired of being led around and wanted answers, the cost of getting those answers be damned.
Through the knowledge Raziel already possessed of history prior to becoming a wraith, paired with what he gained during his venture in Soul Reaver 1&2, Raziel did gain a great level of understanding of Nosgoth. But history is written by the victors, and so Nosgoth's history had some secrets to be uncovered in Defiance. As for his reckless behavior could best be considered a desperate act of self-preservation among hurrying to uncover the truth and his own salvation before history played out.
In the 1st LOK she was was the Balance Guardian whom died shortly before Kain was born, this making Kain her successor & guide as he traveled Nosgoth as a fledgling vampire after his own murder in his adult life.
SR1 She acts as a guide to Raziel, but in SR2 the time zone makes her a bit more timid/hostile around him. She doesn't appear in BO2 and in LoKD that era of Ariel rudely helps Raziel locate Vorador's manor & in the end she becomes the last forge & purifies the Soul Reaver.
Okay, so the Pillars were created originally to keep the Hylden at bay. They had vampire guardians, which the roles where later granted to humans. And though the humans had no knowledge of the Hylden, they did know that preserving the pillars was essential for Nosgoths integrity against corruption. But I'm curious as to why the elements of the pillars seem to transmigrate a gift to their guardians as Nuprator controlled mind, and moebius to time. How is that essentail to sealing the Hylden?
Maybe it was just a side effect of the magic? Who knows, maybe it was just because they were humans, and that guardianship was never meant for them, that the magic effected them so.
Raziel was born out of profecy. Since the vampires gave the curse on to the humans who were bound by their bloodline so was Raziel. He was Janos his last remaining blood line. Cause why did Kain say that he thru his strongest vampire in to the abyss. And another fact is he has wings proving he was blood related to Janos. And Janos knew about raziel even when to they first met and said my child what have they done to you.
Incorrect. Raziel's soul was taken from the Spectral Realm and bound to his human body, all vampires in Kain's empire were created in this fashion. Kain is the last remaining scion of Janos Audron's bloodline, seeing as he was resurrected with the Heart of Darkness. And Janos knew about the prophecy and was surpirised at Raziel's appearance because he was expecting Raziel to look like the hero from the Ancient murals.
no it did not it was designed after her murder to emphasis that though she believes she is uncorrupted she is not the corruption existed far earlier then Nuprators madness.
if janos made vorador and kain made raziel then why doesn voredor have wings since his creator was the anchien one and raziel haves wing doest that make atleast 2 of the ancient wing race
i think the game bases genetics here ,skipped generations of the ancient vampire gene.
and while every vampire that kain created would have conquered one element like sunlight , water and the spiritual realm and others just dominate , raziel is the one that will conquer flight/air
also :P
i think acient vampires create vampires by biting them , so i guess raziel just mutated by chance like that and the prophecy might also have something to do with it.
As said a few posts above, the Inquisitors Kain raised to be their Vampire Offsprings were already dead. He had to take their sould directly from the Spectral Realm and re-bound them to their bodies, but that must have required him some extensive use of necromantic powers, I assume, so the transformation was much different than that the Ancients bestowed upon their children. That is why all of the Lieutenants mutated and gained some sort of speciality. D.R.
I don't think she's so much ignorant as just resigned in her ways. She doesn't want to let herself believe any differently - she's kind of maintaining hope, as it were.
Actually, Ariel was so convinced of the righteousness of her thoughts that she never thought to question whether her beliefs were right and wrong. I believe Raziel merely gave her a dose of reality. Ariel's prejudice is a shame upon her duty as the Guardian of Balance.
Had he absorbed her she would not be there in present day Nosgoth (so the Nosgoth from SR1) to meet him after Kain's battle. So he couldn't suck her up, or it would have changed his own past.
In the LoK games, time travel cannot cause paradox. We see this many times - when they change something that otherwise would, history and future re-arrange themselves to accomodate the change and keep the same outcome. This is how in Defiance, Raziel can consume Ariel without causing the ill effects noted.
That's an excellent question. Be regardless of it's techincal validitity, isn't it most important to notice he did not offer? Remember his last sentences. He knows she deserves her punishment. Acting as if her hands are clean, when she just as responsible. Thus, so beautiful to see her so destroyed (morally).
Still remains one of the best scripts to date.

i thought the game ends a -500 years in the past if you are talking about SR2, or are you talking about the whole LOK
JuggaloJohn 3 years ago
It starts at T-30 to T+500 back to T-500.
FagDrag 3 years ago
no it starts t-30 but goes to T+100 (not 500) then to T-500
NasaCortis 3 years ago
I thought it was T-30, then T+70 (100 years after the first time period, as Raziel so noted), and THEN T-500.

Schandas 4 years ago
Maybe it was just a side effect of the magic? Who knows, maybe it was just because they were humans, and that guardianship was never meant for them, that the magic effected them so.
MordecaitheMad 3 years ago
My guess is that an elemental balance in Nosgoth were essential for the Pillars integrity. Once the balance was shifted, the seal was weakened.

Spartan2507 4 years ago

Did Ariel always had a half dead face even before she was assassinated?
JReed1985 4 years ago
no it did not it was designed after her murder to emphasis that though she believes she is uncorrupted she is not the corruption existed far earlier then Nuprators madness.
horusrage 4 years ago
Nupraptor didn't have much facial features, I wonder how they kissed lol. The Legacy of Kain mythology is so interesting.
JReed1985 4 years ago
Why doesen't she looks so destroyed there? When Raziel meets Ariel in the same spot in defiance she looks like hell.
larson1988 4 years ago
they remade her graphics for defiance thats why
horusrage 4 years ago
Asides from Janos Audron , Ariel is the only one that Raziel trusts and considers a friend ,but that is just my opinion
wowarlord 4 years ago
if janos made vorador and kain made raziel then why doesn voredor have wings since his creator was the anchien one and raziel haves wing doest that make atleast 2 of the ancient wing race
guzarche3 4 years ago
i think the game bases genetics here ,skipped generations of the ancient vampire gene.
and while every vampire that kain created would have conquered one element like sunlight , water and the spiritual realm and others just dominate , raziel is the one that will conquer flight/air
also :P
i think acient vampires create vampires by biting them , so i guess raziel just mutated by chance like that and the prophecy might also have something to do with it.
powerrangersbitch 4 years ago
rephrase(i dont think acient vampires create other vampires by biting them.
powerrangersbitch 4 years ago
No they didn't.They simply took a portion of their Vampiric soul, and fused it with the person they're trying to turn.
RFAKain 4 years ago
I don't think genetics or any modern scientific
paradigms exist in Nosgoth and Voredor was only human.
Mannok 4 years ago
As said a few posts above, the Inquisitors Kain raised to be their Vampire Offsprings were already dead. He had to take their sould directly from the Spectral Realm and re-bound them to their bodies, but that must have required him some extensive use of necromantic powers, I assume, so the transformation was much different than that the Ancients bestowed upon their children. That is why all of the Lieutenants mutated and gained some sort of speciality. D.R.

grim hope though. Hylden f***ed everything up. so at any rate, even WITH kain dead, the pillars would remain like this (Like Raziel said)

Ignorant little ghost.... even after all that time she kept Blaming Kain..
Aganiel 4 years ago
I don't think she's so much ignorant as just resigned in her ways. She doesn't want to let herself believe any differently - she's kind of maintaining hope, as it were.

Because she was so brutally murdered. The Hylden wanted her lover Nupraptor to find her in the worst shape possible.

ChiefPoopypants 5 years ago
In the LoK games, time travel cannot cause paradox. We see this many times - when they change something that otherwise would, history and future re-arrange themselves to accomodate the change and keep the same outcome. This is how in Defiance, Raziel can consume Ariel without causing the ill effects noted.

If she wanted release so much, couldn't Raziel have just ssSssSSsucked her up?

That's an excellent question. Be regardless of it's techincal validitity, isn't it most important to notice he did not offer? Remember his last sentences. He knows she deserves her punishment. Acting as if her hands are clean, when she just as responsible. Thus, so beautiful to see her so destroyed (morally).
