i had capgras when i was psychotic and not receiving anti psychotics yet. That shit sucks. I thought the evil versions of people could read my mind and they were plotting to kill me.
I'm studying Capgras' syndrome and a lot of other really interesting cases. If you are interested in this you should read Oliver Sack's 'The man who mistook his wife for a hat' as well as his other books.
im schizophrenic and ive had the capgras delusion. it is very difficult to explain and can cause lots of suffering to those close to one and to oneself.
this another dillusion thats also like this well in fact its the opposite but they have often spoke about together, it is called the fregoli dillusion where you believe everyone in the world is the same person, who is changing there clothes and appearance quickly.
@0NoName9 Every Freudian explanation has to involve a penis and a vagina. You should read Eysenck's 'sense and nonsense in psychology' or any of the other penguin classics by Eysenck - he has a few digs at Freud's theories and how ridiculous some of them are.
But is recognition before or after emotion? Could the emotional response only begin after recognition so that people or things are already responded to as replacements or impostures?
@JonahTorn Does everyone who recognizes anyone or anything have to feel the same way to accept that they are people they have seen before or objects they have seen before?
I had tried the drug Magic Mushrooms a couple of years ago. And it almost effected me like this. Everything and everyone looked the exact same, but something was off and different about it, like they were someone else, or my house wasn't my house. Of course after it wore off I didn't feel that way anyore. But I wonder if it effects the same part of the brain.
the freudian and oedipus correlation to capgras date back to the turn of the century and the 'theories' have slowly been deconstructed, even the dr in the video disperses this theory when he introduces fifi. big difference between theory and proven fact.
The doctor's "Freudian" example is ridiculous and set up so that he can make the analytic approach seem erroneous. No competently analytically trained psychiatrist would fail to recognize this as a syndrome the result of brain damage. Nor would he or she then try to drag in the Oedipus Complex. It should be noted that the doctor's explanation is pure speculation and not scientifically proven.
It's not just his parents. The part of the brain that is damaged is the emotional aspect of the brain (amygdala). The person can't relay any emotions to people he knows or places (materialistic items) but can remember them. Just no emotional attachment.
fascinating, i'm really interested in all the different mental illnesses that are caused by damage to the different regions of the brain (capgras, aphasia,...)
I've seen a case of this before on television between a wife and husband. It must be really heartbreaking and frustrating for the patient, and especially the family members. its like they have him back, but they don't. Some of the delusions in some cases, are more angry and confrontational than the one shown in this clip, as well.
Well explained! I like that doctor

And once again, the Freudian explanation turns out to be utter bullshit. How unsurprising.
