This animation was made so long ago! The real Terrafugia has made over twenty flights to date, and It looks a little bit different than the one in this animation. The real car is one of the most stable aircraft ever flown and by far the easiest to land. My Cessna 150 trainer doesn't even compare.
you wont have your personal airport anywhere if u plant to land in the highway dont forget the speed the space and the wings what about if those get in the wrongs hands suicidals will hit comercial airplanes buidings and the white house.they will rescue convicts they will kidnap people etc.
how is these thing suppose to fly in traffic, i mean, cars are to close together, and it needs a lot of space to take off. also in landing... these is just BS.
@tala12 They are designed to take off from small airports, and land at small air ports, but then after you land, you can simply leave the airport while driving it away. lol
Thank god the poor and the stupid simply will not be able to afford these things. Fortunatley, the rich and stupid are relatively few in number despite being fairly high profile, they should die out quickly leaving the skies safe for the rest of us.
its not like it just falls out of the sky, it just becomes a glider, you still have full control of the aircraft so pick a field or a road (since it is a car too) and just set it down. its actually quite practical and extremely ingenious, a really great idea.
Well, speaking of practical, imagine how many people wreck every day distracted while driving.....Now, imagine that same number but with flying cars into crowded neighborhoods all across the country. Imagine taking a shower, then suddenly, bam! a flying car in your bathroom.
you will need at least a sport pilots license to operate one of these crafts, so you have, to an extent, training on what to do in this sort of engine loss scenario. as far as i know airplanes dont go through peoples houses everyday, thats not to say that it doesn't happen once in a while but there are other options like fields and roads (since it does have wheels like a car).
training people to fly aircraft wont eliminate this from happening but it will reduce the possibility.
no matter what i say, you will be able to pick holes in this idea, which is why its still in testing and the regulations behind operating them and how airspace will be laid out are still in the works. its an amazing idea that people will one day be able to use these as transportation.
I'm certain it will work on long distance use. Generally my opinion of most drivers isn't favorable, and trying to fathom all of these people getting pilot's training boggles my mind. Honestly I think if we really are going to have flying cars, we're going to need completely different physics, & propulsion, not propellers
If that scenario is coming, I think you should install an anti-missile system so you can blow it into pieces before it falls down crashing into your bedroom !!! I guess it would be morally and legally correct, because the people inside that falling vehicule will die anyway, but this might save your family´s lives.
Again, air spaces aren't a "free-for-all" with traffic. If you want to drive from home to work, you need to take one of a possible set of routes to get there, you're not allowed to drive over people's fences and backyards to get where you want to go since it will cause mayhem if everyone else is doing the same. The same applies to air space, you need to follow routes and paths set by controllers. Granted increased traffic load is a possible challenge, but one controllers deal with regardless.
The sky is much larger than a street. Road accidents happen so frequently because there's so little space in the streets that the cars are all crammed together.
PoppedLASTICZ: Every plane, by its very nature, has the ability to glide. Engines die in planes too, you know, in which case pilots engage in a series of steps to either try to restart it or look for a safe place to set the plane down - you don't fall out of the sky as you so alarmingly (and perhaps ignorantly?) suggest.
On a light airplane, like Terrafugia, if the engine "blows" (as PoppedLASTICZ says) you do not "die," you merely glide to a suitable landing place, such as a field.
The Terrafugia can be practical, but is going to be more of a rich person's toy, if it ever gets into production.
PoppedLASTICZ, you ought to get more aviation wisdom before spouting nonsense.
I don't claim to be an expert. I have no knowledge of flying airplanes, correct. I pose questions. People are saying these will be our flying cars, & I wonder, how does that realistically fit into every day driver accidents. These would have to be long distance travel. I can't imagine people using this short distances to drop the kids off at school, etc....
Of course the "flying" part of this flying car is meant for long distance travel. That's why its inventors call it a roadable airplane: it's supposed to be driven to the nearest airport, take off from the track, fly to the airport that is closer to its destination, land and complete the travel on its wheels again.
I think they need to do some work on suspension / landing gear. The wheels as they are way too close to the car's underbelly. A slight tilt would cause it to impact the landing strip. Perhaps not when the weather ideal and a test pilot guides the vehicle, but when an under - taught and overconfident man like me takes it to the skies.
instrument rateing and a pilots licence will be required and most of the requirements of a solo pilot , but lets dream a little ,is this a step into another world ,road and air travel as you please most aviation officials think its about time we stepped up to the plate and took to the air , of corse by 2099 road travel will be something of the past that most of our grand kids will laugh about ,air travel in the private sector must come ,
No instrument rating is required as the rule for LSAs is VFR only. And the license required (in addition to an automotive driver's license) is the new Sport License which is half the requirements for a PPL.
The entire point of a roadable aircraft is that you can park it at home and avoid paying hangar fees at the airport. Additionally, you don't have to arrange for ground transport to your destination, and you don't have to wait at the airport to transfer your bags to another vehicle.

Here is what his MIT professor had to say about him, In my 30 years as a teacher [at MIT], I cannot recall a clearer exponent of the Edison mindset, said MIT Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics Manuel Martinez-Sanchez, one of Dietrichs recommenders for the $30,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize. Carl is routinely cycling back and forth between what is known and what is possible.
Give them time to get it right. They are on schedule with their production
Have you researched the speaker's biography in this video?
Carl Dietrich - 2006 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize Winner and S.B. (1999), S.M. (2003) and Ph.D. (2006) in aeronautics and astronautics from MIT. In 1998 Dietrich co-founded the MIT Rocket Team. He holds a patent for his Centrifugal Direct Injection Engine (CDIE)—a low-cost, high-performance rocket propulsion engine. CDIE operates without a conventional turbopump pressurization system, which greatly reduces its complexity and cost.
Why is there no video footage of this machine actually flying? Take off- in flight maneuvering- landing. I've searched the company website and web. NOTHING AT ALL!
how much do you think this thing will cost? i wonder if we'll be able to start flying if traffic is bad... wouldn't we need clearance from air traffic control or something so we don't get shot down?
I'll be getting one. As a Private Pilot, ground transportation at your destination can be a royal pain! The average Joe won't be jumping all over this. What's required physically and financially will scare the majority off. My PPL cost me over $7500 in 2003 at an AF Aero Club (very cheap). Although this will only require a Sport License, it still will not be cheap to get certified.
FYI...they are not NASA engineers, they are Awarded MIT engineers and all 3 have their pilots licenses.
This is awesome. This is a good example of how far the evolution has come. This might be expensive now, but don't you think the first car ever made was expensive? In the old days no one could afford a car...
For some of the previous comments...the jetsons invented the flying car around 40 years ago, not 20. And for the guy that said it'll never work for unstable and weak wing structure....the is thing is going out in the next few months...by next year it'll be on alot of showroom floors...its not intended to replace the car...or to be a car that can fly...its intended to be a plane that can drive like a car. Yes you will need a pilot license.
With all the stupid drivers causing mayhem on the roads, can you imagine these same characters zipping around in the air. The death toll would rise 10x.
...It's amazing how many ways that wouldn't work. Yaw would be quite unstable, an aerodynamic stall would be un-recoverable, the wing structure would be weak, it would be very slow on the ground (let alone aloft), the suspension would have to be so strong that the ride would be un-bearable on the road, it would be so heavy that it would need an engine bigger than can fit into it, and there is no room for a fuel tank to make flight worth while...and that's just the tip of the Iceberg.
it actually will fly 500 miles on a single tank of gas. its cruising speed is 115 mph, and was developed by former NASA engineers. so take your stupid ass somewhere else.
People can't figure out a 4 way stop and in the future we are all pilots? You think gas is expensive now? Make it electric and maybe it is an idea to benefit the future. Hope that someone creates something better out of this - but nice video. The Jetsons invented flying cars 20 years ago!
Dummy, 16 year old girls won't be flying around in this thing. You have to have a pilot's license to fly the thing, and you can't get a pilot's license till you are 17. And only people who are willing to put in several thousand dollars for pilot's training and 200 grand to buy the car/plane will be flying them around anyway.
This is a 20th century idea that is pretty impractical today. Not to mention the design of the wheels are no way going to make it on common (esp suburb) streets and highways, plus the folding wings and tail would lose structural integrity from the wind resistance during land travel. Add that up with the fact that the company name and product is one in the same and this looks like a doomed business/scam. Anyone who gets this would be a collector or for nostalgia.
I hangar at my house ($200 per month saving), I drive 8 miles to the local airport, I fly 30 miles (over the most congested highway in the state) to the airport in the state capitol, I drive 2 miles to work, I fly 400 miles to a project site (landing 2 miles away and driving the rest), I save 2 hours of travel time each way, I eat dinner with my kids. I can see the advantage.
I could fly from Boston to ski in Killington Vermont every weekend all winter long in this vehicle. Sure beats getting up at 5:00 am and driving 3 hours just to ski and then drive back 3 more hours. The Transition could get me from Boston to Killington, VT in less than an hour. Now that is cool!
When can I come to Woburn, MA and help start up your production line and help validate your design and production processes. I work as a Quality Engineer and Manufacturing Engineer doing design and process validation.
I believe that this is the greatest invention related to personal transporation since Henry Ford's Model T, and the Wright Brothers Flyer, combined.
A suggestion: the wings should be folded up on top like a fly or moths wing. This will elimate the car mode problem of crosswinds blowing the car over due to the wings large surface area exposed to the crosswind. Carl Dietrich, Sam and team, You Rock!!!
The model T itself wasn't revolutionary either - it was the tech behind it that made it cheap. In this case, the idea for a flying car's been around since the 50's, but this could still be much different. Don't overplay this, but don't disregard it's potential either
I think most people miss the point of the design intent. They are NOT trying to make a "flying car" for the masses, they are trying design a plane that can fly to other airports that can also be used as ground transportation once you arrive at your destination airport. Today, in a normal private plane, once you fly to a small municipal airport, unless someone else provides local ground transport, you are stuck at the airport. This design solves the problem "How do we get to the.. after we land?"
But this makes no sense. What is the purpose? For 200,000 dollars, anyone can buy a much better airplane, and a much better car. Since one had to drive the terrafugia to an airport to take off, why not just drive a real car and then fly a real airplane? Oh, so you can drive to any airport to take off? Is that the idea? So you drive around in this bakery truck and then decide as you exit the grocery store that you will drive 25 miles to the nearest airport to fly -- where exactly?
They are NOT solving how to get between your home and the airport. The problem they are trying to solve is what you do AFTER you fly SOMEWHERE ELSE, like a small municipal airport. The trick is to fly somewhere else and THEN be able to drive to your hotel, cabin, into town, and explore somewhere new.
Any new idea will have it's problems, obviously it is not perfect, but at least it's a start, any thing that flies needs aerofoils somewhere. (except rockets and balloons, yes OK). The Wright Brothers were laughed at too. To everyone who thinks the concept is crap, if/when you come up with a better idea that works PERFECTLY, then talk, until then, be quiet. I hope some genius inventor ignores the nay sayers and gets a car that can fly above traffic to solve the gridlock on the roads.
ey men can you send me the plane to fsx please

Why? How does this make it any easier to fly without a visa?
People can already steal a plane and use it to fly to another country without visas.
You'll still need a pilot's license and skills to fly this.

i think the main idea of it being a car is ultimately so you do not have to pay for the storage and the convenience

I don't think anyone with $200,000.00 to spare is going to live in a house like that one. This is rich man's toy if that.

Why is there no video footage of this machine actually flying? Take off- in flight maneuvering- landing. I've searched the company website and web. NOTHING AT ALL!

Because it's never actually been flown yet. There is supposed to be a test flight this month.

how much do you think this thing will cost? i wonder if we'll be able to start flying if traffic is bad... wouldn't we need clearance from air traffic control or something so we don't get shot down?

I'll be getting one. As a Private Pilot, ground transportation at your destination can be a royal pain! The average Joe won't be jumping all over this. What's required physically and financially will scare the majority off. My PPL cost me over $7500 in 2003 at an AF Aero Club (very cheap). Although this will only require a Sport License, it still will not be cheap to get certified.
FYI...they are not NASA engineers, they are Awarded MIT engineers and all 3 have their pilots licenses.
DesignoSLK 3 years ago
This is awesome. This is a good example of how far the evolution has come. This might be expensive now, but don't you think the first car ever made was expensive? In the old days no one could afford a car...

i dont care about the looks, it can fuckin' FLY!!!!!!
kieran369 3 years ago 2
For some of the previous comments...the jetsons invented the flying car around 40 years ago, not 20. And for the guy that said it'll never work for unstable and weak wing structure....the is thing is going out in the next few months...by next year it'll be on alot of showroom floors...its not intended to replace the car...or to be a car that can fly...its intended to be a plane that can drive like a car. Yes you will need a pilot license.
lunnsworld 3 years ago 2
With all the stupid drivers causing mayhem on the roads, can you imagine these same characters zipping around in the air. The death toll would rise 10x.
grumpone 3 years ago
1) you need a driver's license and a sport pilot license to operate it
2) it's not intended to replace the car
3) it's $200,000
phoneoperator 3 years ago 2
...It's amazing how many ways that wouldn't work. Yaw would be quite unstable, an aerodynamic stall would be un-recoverable, the wing structure would be weak, it would be very slow on the ground (let alone aloft), the suspension would have to be so strong that the ride would be un-bearable on the road, it would be so heavy that it would need an engine bigger than can fit into it, and there is no room for a fuel tank to make flight worth while...and that's just the tip of the Iceberg.
ksrslr 3 years ago
it actually will fly 500 miles on a single tank of gas. its cruising speed is 115 mph, and was developed by former NASA engineers. so take your stupid ass somewhere else.
cyprenator 3 years ago 2
People can't figure out a 4 way stop and in the future we are all pilots? You think gas is expensive now? Make it electric and maybe it is an idea to benefit the future. Hope that someone creates something better out of this - but nice video. The Jetsons invented flying cars 20 years ago!

Yeah.. I don't want 16 year old girls to be flying around in half a ton of metal and plastic above my house, no one does.
Prosth3tic 3 years ago
Dummy, 16 year old girls won't be flying around in this thing. You have to have a pilot's license to fly the thing, and you can't get a pilot's license till you are 17. And only people who are willing to put in several thousand dollars for pilot's training and 200 grand to buy the car/plane will be flying them around anyway.
You are a big dummy.
thexxinvinciblexxone 3 years ago 3
This is a 20th century idea that is pretty impractical today. Not to mention the design of the wheels are no way going to make it on common (esp suburb) streets and highways, plus the folding wings and tail would lose structural integrity from the wind resistance during land travel. Add that up with the fact that the company name and product is one in the same and this looks like a doomed business/scam. Anyone who gets this would be a collector or for nostalgia.

Cant they just make some level of the atmosphere anti gravity and then we could fly around like the cars in blade runner.

"I believe that this is the greatest invention related to personal transporation since Henry Ford's Model T, and the Wright Brothers Flyer, combined"
its a fold up plane its nothing revolutionary, its an expensive toy nothing more
chrislawless 3 years ago
The model T itself wasn't revolutionary either - it was the tech behind it that made it cheap. In this case, the idea for a flying car's been around since the 50's, but this could still be much different. Don't overplay this, but don't disregard it's potential either
Hrrpttr854 3 years ago
just need FED X and a fleet of cargo planes and every one buy a smart car , catch a cargo plane going your way . it would be cheaper faster safer
thomasuras 3 years ago 2
I think most people miss the point of the design intent. They are NOT trying to make a "flying car" for the masses, they are trying design a plane that can fly to other airports that can also be used as ground transportation once you arrive at your destination airport. Today, in a normal private plane, once you fly to a small municipal airport, unless someone else provides local ground transport, you are stuck at the airport. This design solves the problem "How do we get to the.. after we land?"
coolgrey1 3 years ago 2
But this makes no sense. What is the purpose? For 200,000 dollars, anyone can buy a much better airplane, and a much better car. Since one had to drive the terrafugia to an airport to take off, why not just drive a real car and then fly a real airplane? Oh, so you can drive to any airport to take off? Is that the idea? So you drive around in this bakery truck and then decide as you exit the grocery store that you will drive 25 miles to the nearest airport to fly -- where exactly?
myndenway 3 years ago
They are NOT solving how to get between your home and the airport. The problem they are trying to solve is what you do AFTER you fly SOMEWHERE ELSE, like a small municipal airport. The trick is to fly somewhere else and THEN be able to drive to your hotel, cabin, into town, and explore somewhere new.
coolgrey1 3 years ago
The Plane looks cool but the car is as ugly as HELL.
GoRacing1 3 years ago
looks good in concept and cgi but lets see the prototype in action!!
trav1971 3 years ago
Any new idea will have it's problems, obviously it is not perfect, but at least it's a start, any thing that flies needs aerofoils somewhere. (except rockets and balloons, yes OK). The Wright Brothers were laughed at too. To everyone who thinks the concept is crap, if/when you come up with a better idea that works PERFECTLY, then talk, until then, be quiet. I hope some genius inventor ignores the nay sayers and gets a car that can fly above traffic to solve the gridlock on the roads.
