Mr. Price I appluad your outspokeness on this issue. America faces many crises at the moment, and education is surely one of them. I think the problem has many facets which bring about, in the end, lower outcomes. Jay Leno's humorous segment is a good random indicator that something is amiss.
One of the issues involved in improving the education system is education discipline. Respect for the classroom, teacher, and the school as a whole. Thanks for the video.
yeah it's scary but think about it, it's funny because the majority of the public actually knows the answer and these select minority on the street don't. This means that in order for jaywalking to be funny, well over the majority of the people watching it have to know the answer. So stop blaming school systems, because the majority of the public know the answer to these basic questions. I went to a public school and I have never been stumped by a Leno question.
But these are very easy questions. That anybody can't answer them is terrifying. And we are dealing with adults here....Truth is, public schools disdain facts and knowledge. Children are brought along knowing as little as possible...RE: where these approaches came from and where they go, please see video "John Dewey and the Kiss of Death."
i think that private schools disdain facts and knowledge more than public. Just think about it, Catholic schools?? Anyways, I went to a public school and I've never heard a jaywalking question that I didn't know, so it's not the schools, its the people who go there. The schools are required to teach the material, but do the children have to pay attention? no. I'd say the real problem here is lack of motivation in the kids. but then again, most public school systems aren't that bad
@blacksabbathgnr098 Interesting point. The difference is that private schools put their indoctrination schema out front and deliberately enforce orthodoxy and conformity. So Catholic Schools are just as pernicious as public schools are. The difference is that they are fairly transparent. You know what you are paying for. All schooling is bad and functions as a major part of the class structure of the US.
Not only that, and more importantly, the public school system disdains instilling free thought and civic mindedness. By the time most kids walk out of public school (graduated or otherwise) they despise learning and most often can only think about their narrow spectrum of experience in life. AKA, their class culture, their individual mindset, and their selves. We don't need to fix the school system, we need to replace it with something entirely different.
@chinesemilkman Absolutely correct. Public schools have done their job and done it well. That's unfortunate but true.Keep in mind, that the purpose of the schools is not instill free thought-that's an oxymoron and contradiction. Its is to enforce conformity and orthodoxy and produce future generations of workers. It is part of the American class structure. Keep the poor ignorant and stupid and in their place.
@BruceDeitrickPrice Very true. The reason is that public schools were created to educated future laborers, clerks and factory workers not doctors, lawyers and architects. That's not the job of public schools. My analysis indicates that schools are actually doing their job not failing. Their job is to provide an education not preparation which is wholly different. People who go to public schools get an education. Period. end of discusion.
@BruceDeitrickPrice Public schools disdain facts? We'll that would go against their very fabric. Private schools are the ones who purposely "ignore" facts to push their religious agenda. For the most part public schools are objective (and I can say that as a somewhat recent graduate). Of course there are dumbasses who don't pay attention because they are stupid or don't care, but that's going to be the case at any high school!
Sir: Jay Leno is an excellent choice for Educator of the Year. I have watched his hilarious "Jaywalking" segments, and while many people might think it has to be a put-on or joke; sadly I know from personal experience that it is all too true. Kudos to your excellent and insightful choice! It is absolutely spot-on!
I appreciate this video and your efforts. I agree with what you say and maintain that our public education could hardly be called education. I went through the public school system just recently, graduated high school in 2000. I feel that I learned only very basic skills through school and have only progressed my education through self-motivated efforts and a desire to not be dumb. Even though I understand that I know very little, in comparison to my peers I may as well be a genius.
You are obviously very wise and I hope you will peruse my main site Improve-EducationDOTorg. You might also write letters to your hometown paper explaining how your school could have served you better.
@LunarCrystal07 What are you fucking complaining about? You got an education through the public schools and graduated from high school with a diploma. The schools did their job. Their job is not to teach anything beyond the basic tools and skills needed. That's it. The rest is window dressing. The problem in this country is that people don't know anything about how educational systems work and thus fall for the bullshit and propaganda.
I know I'm rather serious in this video but the truth is, if at all possible, I laugh at anybody's jokes. It's good for the soul. I actually watch Leno every day. Last night he had a Jaywalk All Stars that was as scary as any you've seen. "Where's the Suez Canal?" "Suez??" Thanks for the comment.

You need "citizens" who care.
That should be incorporated into the definition of a citizen - someone who cares about someone or something other than themselves.

I'm glad I was homeschooled. That said, I just saw Jaywalking for the first time last week. It was hilarious!

"...when you water it."
