wow this is wierd im really trying to make the cross over from windows to ubuntu and its really difficult for a new user ive never used ubuntu and it's really hard my media player is saying the a dvd that i bought something about encrypted so i can't play it's really not made for everybody it's really not something you can just pick up and say wow this is really easy i like this please ubuntu make ubuntu more easier for people to make the switch i remeber a guy saying download something but that
i have been using ubuntu for a year now. and i finally got tired of the incompatibility, but the good thing is there are a lot of alternatives at the software center and everything is free. one major draw back for me is video play back (flash and movie) are so slugish and very CPU intensive. since i mostly use my computer for such i'm switching back to winndows after a really pleasant experince from ubuntu.
I really wish someday i would completely swicth to such a cool and smart OS, but what makes me desparate that there is little, or perhaps too little supports like Visual Studio, Some games, Installers, drivers and lot many tools i am addicted to use on Windows.
Really? And a MAC costs how much? $1200 and up? Ubuntu is FREE! and in my opinion, speaking as a very new user, Ubuntu takes the best of Windows and MAC and mashes them into an amazing full featured, user friendly, secure OS
@Ironman52398 no itunes but u can install it through wine XD and google chrome and ooVoo are available :) just download google chrome the way u'd download it for windows. simple.
@noijze Try it out. Go to the ubuntu website and install it using Wubi. This will allow you to switch between the two and see if you like it. If you don't. You'll be able to delete it the same way you'd delete any other file. Though if your computer can run windows. It can easily run Ubuntu.

@noijze I wouldn't recommend you to delete W7, unless you have the installation disc. Since windows does cost money, and it is quite difficult to get games to run any linux distro. Give it a go for about a week or so. Or you could simply keep your set up you have right now and boot into linux for as long as you want.
@wrathallll that dock came from NeXT OS, which is the unix based OS steve jobs worked on the time he didnt work at apple in the early ninetees. Anyway, these are all unix based systems, the biggest diff is that linux are not content nazis.

@Ggalacticos well im no microsoft fanboy but imo windows 7 is better than linux... vista sucks but windows 7 runs smoother than any linux distro ive tried (including ubuntu, kubuntu, archlinux and fedora), its more compatible to hardware and software, its fast, i never have viruses and hardly errors (much less than with linux)... ive only tested the unity interface for a couple of minutes but in my opinion it really sucks... gnome 2 was better

@Ggalacticos You can't just bash Windows like that. Ubuntu is good for specific things, Windows too. Last time I check to run a game on Ubuntu, you need wine. And I'll add that games look and run like crap when you run through Wine. And you need a lot of third party stuff to use a lot of programs, like once again, Wine is needed for Microsoft Office. Ubuntu is great, but so is Windows. Btw, pro Linux users use Fedora. The only crappy OS out there really, is Mac OS.

@ONEBlackJellyFish, how do you mean? Do you mean readily out of the box? Or do you mean at all possible? The software centre will let you readily add "gnome-tweak-tool" which will let you modify system fonts and other things and compiz manager will give you a lot of special effects that are not available in windows. Adding "screenlets" will give you desktop widgets (although they need some work after the transition to unity). If customization is what you "can do" I disagree.
I want to install zorin os. So i chose replace windows with zorin but then it said not enough free space and it crashes. How can i make space for a partition?
for me is exactly the same im a programmer i dont usually play games...maybe some quake 3 arena, but that game i have on every single plataform, i got 3 machines each one running with ubuntu 11.10 , PC windows 7 64-bit, macbook pro 13 inch running :p macOSx
the only actual operating system that i wouldnt recomend programming on is on mac is to difficult to get a good IDE with a GOOD compiler...but still i think all of the 3 are good :D

@Backspacebrad yup :) download cairo dock , it doesnt bring the menu bar from the left to the bottom but it adds a cool dock on the bottom , its really cool and pretty customizable
in my opinion ubuntu is good for browsing the web (now that flash actually works on it ten years later lol) but for anything else other than coding and stuff on it..ur shit out of luck. they have gotten better with porting games to it but i wouldnt say that makes it a gaming os yet... its just... so far behind.... the fun shit u can do in windows like the lattest graphix games emulators and stuff is in abundance for windows. plus video/audio recording software is ack.. tried it wont do it again

UNREAL DEVELOPMENT KIT is out with better graphix i got the beta comes with a free demo game... its beatiful gota love it. u can make ur own games with nice graphix. UDK Beta out for windows now. Supports greater features of windows OS. UDK was used to make gears of war and alot of games we play.
@adryannnful Some banks do use Linux in Romania, ever heard of ABMs? Those machines need a realiable OS with a great uptime. The best part is you can customise it! Not like Windows which does not let you customise as much.
@ghajaanan linux is very compatible with the software files that you mentioned, for microsoft office just use Libre Office to open MS Office files, and for torrenting there are a lot of application that you can use, for example Transmission and Deluge

Less features isn't an improvement, IMO. Gnome used to have an uncountable amount of features and settings. Now it has none that I can find. At least xfce is still usable... for now.
looking forward to having to manually search for and compile applications when the usable ubuntu is "unsupported"

@RockBand2Freak78 coming from someone who's not bias'd about linux or windows, I'd say it depends. windows has a lot of programs that don't run on linux, but linux is fun to use once you get the hang of it. or you could just do like I did and duel wield both linux and windows.
I found that 11.10 has more problems than the previous version. Although I still find it better than Windows 7, I'm looking forward to the next upgrade. Over all, a 3/5 is what I rate it.

am new to the whole Linux OS and started with Ubuntu couple of days ago , and even though am still a newbie i already don't get why did they remove the upper panel stuff like Application / System , it seemed to be very useful i like the unity bar too since its super fast to search for stuff and it has lots of shortcuts but i can't get why does it cancel the upper panel drop down menus ... is there anyway to i can have both ? i hope Ubuntu is that flexible ...
Is there a NBR and if so does it have any issues? The last time I tried to install ubuntu on my netbook it worked fine apart from wifi so it became useless to me.
This looks awesome, although the only thing keeping me from getting it is its compatibility issues, especially for the fact that it still cant run ".exe" files without use of Wine. Also I'm a gamer type so when Ubuntu finally is able to run ".exe" files independently, I will use it, or at least until Steam gets off its lazy ass and starts on a Linux version... :(

I just finished fixing my computer after this screwed it. It would not let install it to the SSD's but only wanted the hard drive. All the icons on the left were almost off the screen, it would not let me resize it.
It then corrupted the boot loader so I could no longer log into Windows 7.
Both 32 and 64 bit seem the same. Some serious work is needed before I will waste a morning again.
Everyone bitching about the new version just go back to the latest LTS. These new versions are just to test and feel what they are working on until they release a new LTS wich will have all of the bugs fixed and will be a lot smoother. There is a reason they call LTS's Long Term Service

Since I started using linux about 3 years ago I have converted 7 people who now wouldn't touch crappy windows if you paid them. And ubuntu is very user friendly especially the support in the ubuntu forums from the community.

I use linux in dualboot with windows 7 to xtend my notebook's battery life.
However, windows applications and games are far more advanced and mature than ubuntus and macos, nobody can deny that.
Since there is not many quality apps outthere for ubuntu yet, it is unfortunatly a boring OS compared to windows.

@ONEBlackJellyFish, how do you mean? Do you mean readily out of the box? Or do you mean at all possible? The software centre will let you readily add "gnome-tweak-tool" which will let you modify system fonts and other things and compiz manager will give you a lot of special effects that are not available in windows. Adding "screenlets" will give you desktop widgets (although they need some work after the transition to unity). If customization is what you "can do" I disagree.

for me is exactly the same im a programmer i dont usually play games...maybe some quake 3 arena, but that game i have on every single plataform, i got 3 machines each one running with ubuntu 11.10 , PC windows 7 64-bit, macbook pro 13 inch running :p macOSx
the only actual operating system that i wouldnt recomend programming on is on mac is to difficult to get a good IDE with a GOOD compiler...but still i think all of the 3 are good :D

in my opinion ubuntu is good for browsing the web (now that flash actually works on it ten years later lol) but for anything else other than coding and stuff on it..ur shit out of luck. they have gotten better with porting games to it but i wouldnt say that makes it a gaming os yet... its just... so far behind.... the fun shit u can do in windows like the lattest graphix games emulators and stuff is in abundance for windows. plus video/audio recording software is ack.. tried it wont do it again

Ubuntu was better than vista i can't deny that much so i give it props for being semi useful. I'm shocked it beat Vista. So maybe its not so worthless after all? O_o' Once windows 7 came out it became shit (again) lol.. Windows7 DX 11 is out better graphix on home pcs windows is really focusing on games now. Gota love that. They saw the huge job market in it.

UNREAL DEVELOPMENT KIT is out with better graphix i got the beta comes with a free demo game... its beatiful gota love it. u can make ur own games with nice graphix. UDK Beta out for windows now. Supports greater features of windows OS. UDK was used to make gears of war and alot of games we play.

@ghajaanan linux is very compatible with the software files that you mentioned, for microsoft office just use Libre Office to open MS Office files, and for torrenting there are a lot of application that you can use, for example Transmission and Deluge

Less features isn't an improvement, IMO. Gnome used to have an uncountable amount of features and settings. Now it has none that I can find. At least xfce is still usable... for now.
looking forward to having to manually search for and compile applications when the usable ubuntu is "unsupported"

I found that 11.10 has more problems than the previous version. Although I still find it better than Windows 7, I'm looking forward to the next upgrade. Over all, a 3/5 is what I rate it.

I still don't understand why they rob a few pixels forcing you to have a bar at the top and then hide menu contexts in it only to be seen if you hover with your mouse over it.
Why don't they understand that this is highly illogical? Why add something to only hide something?

am new to the whole Linux OS and started with Ubuntu couple of days ago , and even though am still a newbie i already don't get why did they remove the upper panel stuff like Application / System , it seemed to be very useful i like the unity bar too since its super fast to search for stuff and it has lots of shortcuts but i can't get why does it cancel the upper panel drop down menus ... is there anyway to i can have both ? i hope Ubuntu is that flexible ...

This looks awesome, although the only thing keeping me from getting it is its compatibility issues, especially for the fact that it still cant run ".exe" files without use of Wine. Also I'm a gamer type so when Ubuntu finally is able to run ".exe" files independently, I will use it, or at least until Steam gets off its lazy ass and starts on a Linux version... :(

I just finished fixing my computer after this screwed it. It would not let install it to the SSD's but only wanted the hard drive. All the icons on the left were almost off the screen, it would not let me resize it.
It then corrupted the boot loader so I could no longer log into Windows 7.
Both 32 and 64 bit seem the same. Some serious work is needed before I will waste a morning again.

Since I started using linux about 3 years ago I have converted 7 people who now wouldn't touch crappy windows if you paid them.
