These guys were so underrated by almost everyone; including me. I thought of myself as a serious Rock N Roller, and the Monkees were (IMO) corney. They weren't Cream, CCR, Hendricks, Poco Harum, nor were they the Kinks, Spencer Davis Group, The Animals, or Stones. I thought of them as TV created fluff. But Micky Dolenze performance here is unquestionably one of the best Rock N Roll performances ever. Good for you Monkees; kudos Micky
Not sure of the sax solo but the high note trumpet solo is played by Bill Chase, who was at the time the lead trumpet with Woody Herman's band and later the later of the rock band "Chase".
And these guys don't qualify for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?!!? Yeah right. 100% better than over half the people in the RaRHoF and 90% of the stuff being played today.
Monkees myself but I gotta say the least talented of the group was Davy Jones. Sorry just the way I saw it. Micky was awesome. Peter and Mike were great. Davy was just there to look cute. Not that talented in my opinion.
Davy was very talented. He wasn't as musically talented as the other guys (besides his singing). He was more talented in acting. Just don't underestimate him.
There was a reason Mickey was the lead singer in a local band before The Monkees, because he was that damn good! They WERE talented guys. If there was an exception to the group it was Davy.
@Gottaknowbetterful I felt the exact same way! Micky was so underrated, such a shame, he had a great voice, possibly one of the best in pop music, and it was so awesome to see him shine in this video!
Mickey still sings with his sister Coco and has ever since they were young.. I love the rendition of Midnight Train with just the two of them on acoustic guitar. Truly amazing, they sound so young and mischievous.
Mickey was a child actor to. He played a boy in the series " Circus Boy " he was called " Corky " in it. Loved the monkees and still do. Thank goodness for technology. Otherwise all would be lost.
@jondoe4171 And isn't it amazing that the child actor became such a great singer. I'd thought it was Davy Jones singing many of the Monkee songs...in fact, it was Mikey all along!
:) and this folks...is why Micky's my FAVE Monkee <3 i just wish they didnt cancel their summer tour X(..i woulda gotten to see them a second time X'''(
This is a great track. Many many years ago I bought the 45rpm single of Daydeam Believer and this track was the B side. That was the first time I had heard it and it is still one of my favourites to this day. Thanks for posting it.
He's absolutely channeling James Brown. He's amazing here, the singing, the movement (with a nod to JB). This one was a real shocker, in a good way, when it first played on air. Like Star Collector, it was ahead of its time. Just a little on the cutting edge.
Micky was a singer & guitarist first. He only learnt to play drums for the show... His amazing talent was his ability to 'scat'. He was given the basic premise of 'Parchment Farm' (lyrics revolving around someone attempting to get drunk enough to suicide by drowning). Basically, he did several several 'stream of consciousness' scats (what you'd now call 'rapping') on the theme to the music... and the final lyrics were plucked from there. They're all amazing & deserved to be serious musicians.
This has always been one of my favs... I mean the bass, the horns, the way Mickey rides the rhythm. The look of the vid. is nice the bass player with the gloves and flashes of the horns and Mickey swaying to the rhythm... Love it!!!
hmmm this was from one of the shows..... um for my dvd it says like if you copy this stuff you could be in jail five years but i just love how he is doing this and the colors
what great rhythm Mickey has, just to be able to sing this one!!!! They were great...many fantastic songs, especially if you were around then, when it was all going on...
My favorite Dolenz tune. It is nothing like any of the other Monkees songs. was lucky enough to see him perform this one live in 1986. Three times. :D Oh, and once more in '90.
@emeiii4639 before the monkees he wasnt a drumer, he was a gutarist, davy was a drumer, but the makers of the show thoght he would be lost behind the drums, so they put micky as the drumer, and he hd to learn from there.
@thereelmaster@emeii4639 Actually, no. Davy was an actor in England. He appeared in "Oliver" as the Artful Dodger, then moved to america and happen to be in the right place at the right time for auditions for The Monkees. As for Dolenz, he was an actor as well. He appeared in "Circus Boy" as a child. Later on he auditioned for the role in the Monkees. The only REAL musicians were Peter, and Mike, who both left the Monkees after two years to pursue REAL music careers. (which didn't work out)
@TheBrainiac1000 I WANT to say in one of the music montages from the first season... Like, maybe "Monkees A La Mode." He's wearing the red scuba suit and sitting on the grass, tapping his foot while strumming a guitar. (This is all from memory here, so don't hold me to it!)
@TheBrainiac1000 Oh my. That was actually me replying. My husband (Axelman03) must have signed me out and signed himself in without my noticing! Bahaha! Oh well. I still think it was "Monkees A La Mode!"
@kzoladyj I know that show! I watch it all the time. I have seen it since it first aired on antenna tv. I even watch the trailers and stuff on antenna tv, when it was only a day old.
@kzoladyj I guess you can ask me. If you see my videos, you can see that I am just preteen right now. I love the show so much! I got started watching these older shows with The Three Stooges and Alfred Hitchcock. Then I got into music and I loved the Partridge Family and the Beatles. The Beatles got me into the Monkees! :)
@TheBrainiac1000 Sounds like you were born a generation too late. Never fear, if you'r a preteen, maybe in a few years, real talent will triumph instead of the $hit you get on the radio today. I think there's a movement in that direction, what with Adele,Adam, etc.
@imapowerranger27 And he didn't even know ow to play them at first, but eventually learned. This is what happens with talented people. Where are they today!
