Long story short only travel to the future. But then you might take inventions from the future and claim them as your own, which would create a paradox, especially if you were the original inventor in the future - where did the idea come from?

Basically, don't time travel.

Of course, if you were to kill Hitler, even ignoring the obvious paradox, World War 2 not happening would mean all sorts of technology would not be invented (such as RADAR) and others would be severely hampered (computers). Not only this, but the lack of a baby boomer generation would cause all sorts of genealogical problems - you might not even be born.
