Oklahoma 25 Penn State 10. The bottom line is that Penn State got its lunch handed to them. And this year, the Nittany Lions could go 12-0, but not make it to the National Title game, because of their awful non-conference schedule and because the Big Ten STINKS!
That is true. However, it was Penn State that lost to Oklahoma. It didn't matter if they were an independent or a Big Ten team. They still lost by 15 points.
@blazer79 You missed the point of the highlight video, it was to show that the Sooners weren't averaging 20 yards per carry or something. BTW the Big Ten went 4-3 in bowl games last year with the losses being close, Penn State has won four of their last five bowl games, also do you remember the reason for PSU's bad OOC schedule in 2009? Alabama backed out, and Syracuse turned out to be bad (they won 10 games when scheduled in 2002).
I wouldn't be so quick to give up on Penn State this year. A couple WRs may be real surprises. And if you remember, in the preseason last year, the defense was thinned out and expected to give up loads of points but turned out to be the top defense in the Big Ten, with previously unheralded Aaron Maybin and Navarro Bowman being the surprise stars of 2008. Who knows, maybe Chaz Powell, Derek Moye, Graham Zug, and Brett Brackett could turn out to be amazing WRs.
Zug is great, I agree. Zug managed to become the new Chuck Norris among some Penn State fans ever since he torched the OSU secondary last year. And yep, we still have Bowman. But hey, even if PSU gets shut out of the official NCG, I still want them to win the Rose Bowl. Voters won't want another 1994, so the AP voters will make it a split national championship.
I'm not giving up on them at all. They will be the best in the conference, but they won't be in the title discussion with Florida and the Texas/Oklahoma winner ready to go for big seasons. PSU should start the season around 12.
Yeah, if they go undefeated, there's still a good chance they'll only go to the Rose Bowl. But they still won't be out of the running for an AP #1. However, I think the biggest thing that will hurt them will be the perception of the Big Ten combined with the horrible OOC schedule (a schedule where Temple could be the best team outside of the conference schedule).
Shane Conlan was one of the best Linebackers to ever don the blue and white. Oklahoma had a great team that year and deserved to win that night, but I remember that game very well watching it that night, and two big pass plays by Oklahoma and turnovers by John Shaffer cost us dearly that night, but that D was nasty. Don't think Holloway ever saw a defense as fast and hard hitting like he did that night. Vinny Tesdaverde found out the next year in the Fiesta Bowl. WE ARE!!!!!
Alabama fan here that has tremendous respect for Penn St. football. The greatest fans I've ever met in my travels. I can't wait 'til we play again in a few years (those games from the 80's were classics!!!).
dude shane conlan was a tank with penn state and the bills. even though this was a losing effort for the lions i still added this to my account cuz of #31. lets not forget another psu legend who wore that number
PAUL POSLUZSNY!!
who is currently with the bills right now. how ironic.
Im A Sooner fan, Penn State has always been my #2 though.Even had a subscription to BWI.Yes Shane did A Hell of A job that night containing Jamelle.Glad you all stuffed the canes the next year!!
Avoided him after halftime, yeah. Think OU had some pretty solid linebackers in this game! All I remember was hearing how that running back was gonna run all over our defense. RRRRRRRR! Wrong answer!
I was at that game. It was one of the greatest individual defensive performances in college football history. Jamelle Holloway ended up with 1 yard on 12 carries--but he did hit a big TD pass. Conlan kept PSU in the game before OU pulled away. OU had a great, great team in 1985 and deserved to win that night.
ou fan here. but more importantly a college football fan. great montage. and yes penn state has done a great job at recruiting and developing LBs... something many teams wish they could do. Penn State is the one big ten team i like to see win games. idk why, i have just liked them more than any mich, osu, or Iowa teams.
Oh...Thanks for letting me know 22 years after the fact. Since you are so hip on current events, do you think Darth Vader is really Luke's father? Yes, OU won the game fair and square. All due credit to your team that night. Come on, do you honestly think anyone who follows either team is unaware who won? I just want to show the young people why we are LINEBACKER U. This guy played his butt off for years and he never got the credit he deserved. WE ARE PENN STATE!
its hard to tell who was who, every player looks like a linebacker on that team

1985: Penn State dominates everyone but loses the NCG by two TDs
1986: Penn State wins the NCG, although less dominant through the season
In 2008, Penn State won most games dominantly, but lost the Rose Bowl by two touchdowns, could history repeat itself for the 2009 Nittany Lions?

Not after losing their top four receivers to graduation.
