I'm about to get a black finned shark for my 90G which has some mollies in it, I was just wondering if yours bothered/ate your mollies when they got larger?
@Foxiesz hey i got a 40 gallon breeder. its long and wide can i fit 2 bala sharks in there.?? also theres 2 rainbow sharks , 4 tiger barbs, and some guppies but im sellin them ???? plz answer??
I used a single length of blue LED light rope folded in half and slid into a clear plastic florescent tube cover (found at a local home improvement store), which is a little bigger in size and shape then an actual florescent tube. The blue LED lights are then set on the stand just behind the tank. The blue led lights give off a warm glow and makes for a great night light (hint: The LED rope is on a timer by itself). You can even just use a LED light rope by itself folded in half
Yes, the black fin shark as they get bigger will need to be in saltwater. Even when they are smaller they do well in brackish water. The molly can live in saltwater as well. You can check it out in the April 2011 issue of "Aquarium Fish International Magazine"
Love your tank, I've been looking for a way to give the blue lighting effect but still have that florescent light in the tank, so thanks for letting me know. I have one question though, do you not have a background on the tank? I'm guessing if you put up a plain (I was thinking blue) background the blue led lights wouldn't give the same effect would it? It doesn't look ugly when you have the led light off and your could see your wall straight threw the tank? thanks alot! really appreciate it.
Hey! glad to see someone else has this exact combination. I'm pretty new to fish owning, so glad to see someone making it work, I do have a question though. A friend who owns a couple large tanks of fish told me that Black Fins after they get to a certain size need to be acclimated to a heavier salt water system. Anyone know if this is true and if this requires putting them in a different tank then the Mollies? If anyone can offer two cents on it I would much appreciate it.
@Kudaimo Good question as mine are rather big and I would hate to loose them due to lack of salt in the water. Maybe a search on google would provide some answers..?
@ravesgauge I actually did find out a couple days later from the same friend. Said eventually will need more salt or "Brackish water" i guess it's called, but not that big of deal because Mollies are able to live in Brackish water as well according to him Thanks for replying!
@ravesgauge ino this comment is late but mollys are actually brackish water fish, therefore they would also be able to live in saltwater. so you could just turn your entire tank to saltwater as is and it would be fine.
@ravesgauge Both the mollys and the sharks are naturally brackish fish, but will do completely fine and live a full life in freshwater. Just because something is natural doesn't mean it has to be done. Do you see people with catfish, that stay 50ft on the river/lake floor, with 50ft deep tanks? I don't think so, but the fish still thrive in a tank that is well suited to their size.
@lDARYLN3LSONl I know there is more to fish than tank size. I've been in the hobby for more than ten years. I'm not understanding you analogy though.
@jacksonjones402 I used a single length of blue LED light rope folded in half and slid into a clear plastic florescent tube cover (found at a local home improvement store), which is a little bigger in size and shape then an actual florescent tube. The blue LED lights are then set on the stand just behind the tank. The blue led lights give off a warm glow and makes for a great night light (hint: The LED rope is on a timer by itself). You can even just use a LED light rope by itself folded in half
@jacksonjones402 well actually these are brackwaterfish and they need a certain amount of salt in the water because these fish live as starters in fresh water bus if they grow older the go out to seewater.adventually if you want to keep them as adults you will have to put them in saltwatertanks.by then they will have reached a size of aprox. 45 cm.
I bought two a couple weeks ago, and unfortunantly the one was sick and he was floating in fishy heaven earlier. My healthy female(I believe) does the exact same thing. Swims all the way around the tank rubbing its belly on the glass and running one barbel on the top of the water. I think its part of the whole instinct to migrate but the sickly one was just swimming up and down and basically roatating and spinning past two days just staying in the same place. Any ideas?
@Meleemaker When I see a fish rubbing its body on anything I immediately suspect it of having 'ick'. Ick is a common disease that fish get. It seems as I always get it in my tank when I bring new fish in and empty the water that is in the bag with the fish into my tank. Since I quit emptying the water from the bag and only taking the fish out of the bag with either my hand or a net I don't seem to have issues with ick anymore. Look for tiny white specks that look like salt on the fish.
Also, if you suspect your fish of having ick, you might want to get the treatment from the pet store for that. As ick can spread to other fish in your tank very easily. I hope all goes well for you.
@ravesgauge unfortunantly, the next day my one died(no white speckling that I could see and it looked healthy. I had another one riding the entire side a few times and i went to the Rally yesterday on my bike and came back healthy, checks for spots. Saw one possible spot decided to go get some ick away this morning(I was sore and didnt know it had it). Belly up this morning. Unfortuantly I wasnt fast enough. I treated the tank for it and moved my remaining betta out. Thanks for the help though
@Meleemaker So sorry to hear about your fish.. I know the feeling all too well. There have been a good deal of fish that haven't survived in my tank.. but I've learned which ones do well in my water. Hopefully you'll have better luck in the future.
@dmitch1337 The hood is florescent lighting but I used a single length of blue LED light rope folded in half and slid into a clear plastic florescent tube cover (found at a local home improvement store), which is a little bigger in size and shape then an actual florescent tube. The blue LED lights are then set on the stand just behind the tank. The blue led lights give off a warm glow and makes for a great night light (hint: The LED is on a timer by itself).
Wow - I love the look of this tank - so vibrant and clean! I'm getting ready to get a tank for my family room, would you mind telling me what equipment you're using as far as filters, lights, etc..... ?? Thanks.
The Black fin shark is named that but it is actually a cat fish. And my knowledge of fish shouldn't restrict me, or anyone for that matter, from owning a tank. Many people own fish tanks because it is a pleasant addition to their environment.
@ravesgauge You are correct that it is not a shark, but it is a marine catfish, and you are (or "were") keeping it in freshwater, so besides size, bone structure, and temperament, it is essentially the same situation... hopefully you either no longer own these fish, or they have since been at least acclimated to brackish water.
@vorkev1 Dude, seems to me you dont know anything about fish either. If your expecting to see great whites in this tank then your a retard. And those black fin sharks are catfish we know, however they are called BLACK FIN SHARKS! Do not say to people that they shouldnt own fish if they dont know fish to well, when clearly you have no idea on what your on about. get down bad kid.
