God how old am I!!! I saw the Mentals at the Civic Hotel in Sydney in mid 70s. they were a fantastic pub band . they played their own songs and covers from Wreckless Eric, George Thorogood, Elvis, Eddie Cochrane. Would have a beer with the crowd between sets. We loved them!!! Still going eh...I must get out of my middle aged funk and see them!!!

One of the best bands to see live. Their Christmas show in 1982 was unforgettable. They played with the Dynamic Hepnotics and the Allnighters. Wonderful to see them at their prime.
"Mental As Anything is something of a phenomenon in Australia, having recorded and performed for over twenty years (1977-2000) without a single lineup change"
Very well put mate! Well done
They have never needed to change - very special. Brilliant band that was around through a brilliant era of Australian Music and Life.
We were so lucky to be flooded with great bands back then.
Saw them Christmas 2009 South Maroubra. Some of the boys are locals. Sounded so good I had forgotten they were part of the sound track to the magic moments in my life. My kids were bopping out the magic returned, some things are timeless.
No, I'm sorry this song is about pooing on the beach - If you grew up with "Monumental as Anything" you'll know exactly what I mean... I'm guessing i'm gonna get banned...
i fcked up the times, it was an afternoon gig & by the time i found out it was 2 late. i saw them late last year in st.kilda & they were great. Theyre doin shows with the b-52s & the proclaimers in november, which should be interesting
well I live in Norway and here it's bloody annoying how it takes ages for me to get to the bus stop because I have to struggle my way past all the fighting and playing vikings
Thanks for posting this piece of Aussie rock history. One of my all time fav's. Long live the Mentals, Hoodoo Gurus, Icehouse, Divinyls, Mondo Rock, etc.... 80's Aussie music.
My favorite Mentals song, if not my all time fave.. Bit funny cause now Im an expat living in Norway. Thank fucking Christ that its spring up here now, and that I can dose out on the best of Aussie culture up here on this stuff=D
Yeah, i picked up on it today that it was about ABBA because my dad said it and it all suddenly made sense
I picked up two copies of Cats And Dogs on vinyl, originals. an alright, slightly scratched version for $8 and one my uncle gave me today that is in gem mint condition, no scratches that he found for $1...
They played in Torquay last night. I walked past the venue and there was a very drunk girl hanging over the back fence handing a heavily autographed Mentals poster to a friend, and pointing out all the members and telling us (incorrectly) who they were and what they did in the band... LOL
Man, is this one of my favorite songs ever! The groove is just so damned relaxed, the lyrics tell a fun but weird story (about ABBA? really?), and THAT GUITAR INTRO gives me the shivers.
Their kookiness was a little too studied for me (and they weren't exactly great eye candy)although I admired their musicianship and songwriting ability. This is catchy. Had forgotten all about it.
I wouldn't call this a particularly "fun" song as it is about a divorce, but definitely take your point. It seems very uncool these days to smile. Apparently you have to wear as little as possible, have all the right "moves" and preferably "tood" into the bargain... <yawn>
I'm pretty sure I only saw them once, it was in the early '80s at the Astor in St Kilda. I was only a passing fan but it was a really amazing gig. They performed over 20 songs but I knew every one of them either because they were hits or had radio play. They certainly were great times.
i used to see these guys down the commodore in sandringham years ago. and you know what they were fucking brilliant. mombassa on guitar ,greedy on the keys doherty on the bass and of course the plaza on vocals. this was my upbringing and life. fuuuucking great times.
Anybody who has discovered this song through 'Animal Kingdom' should now do the right thing... immediate suicide.
1. Becuase your ignorance is inexcusable.
2. Because you wasted 90 mins (or whatever) of your life watching such brainless crap.
