  • Anybody who has discovered this song through 'Animal Kingdom' should now do the right thing... immediate suicide.

    1. Becuase your ignorance is inexcusable.

    2. Because you wasted 90 mins (or whatever) of your life watching such brainless crap.

  • @MeatCloud be proud to add yourself to the " haters " and keep your hating thoughts to yourself.

  • i bought the single when it came out. i love the track still! so many people luv this song. it is a gem.

  • I was just a kid when this came out, I never realized how HOT Martin Plaza was. God damn!!

  • God how old am I!!! I saw the Mentals at the Civic Hotel in Sydney in mid 70s. they were a fantastic pub band . they played their own songs and covers from Wreckless Eric, George Thorogood, Elvis, Eddie Cochrane. Would have a beer with the crowd between sets. We loved them!!! Still going eh...I must get out of my middle aged funk and see them!!!

  • @shortofalength how good was it back then!!!!

Plenty of bands did the beer between tunes... Boy do I miss them days :(

  • CORRECTION TO WHERE THE MENTALS ARE PLAYING LIVE NEXT...Level One Chatswood (Above The Chatswood Club) Friday 15th April!

  • @SeductionProductions Saw them thurs 10th March(parkridge tavern,QLD) sat 12th March(beenleigh rsl).Show was so good thurs had to see them sat.Greedy and Martin out front, like a time warp back to the 80's,they absolutely 100 % nailed it!! Played a new song "Bucking Hard" was very cool and very "Mental as ..."

  • I heard this song in Animal Kingdom and couldn't figure out who sang it. Finally got an answer. Thanks so much for posting.

  • @operatorofthedrones Thanks for pointing this out, I've added that information to the title and tags :)

  • Great song

  • I just love this song

  • I always enjoy MAA's lyrics - clever band.

  • I'm 64. I could listen to this song over and again for hours. Commercial music at its zenith.

  • Sad as it sounds, I miss Countdown!

So many aussie bands got a start on Countdown and great run on that show it isnt funny...

Countdown stoped, Aussie music went down faster than a $2.00 hooker.

  • greatest aussie song ever

  • Brilliant.

  • I love Reggie's semi-jogging moves @1:55

  • Does anyone have the original filmclip of this song? It's a classic!

  • One of the best bands to see live. Their Christmas show in 1982 was unforgettable. They played with the Dynamic Hepnotics and the Allnighters. Wonderful to see them at their prime.

  • @hotpepperstudios That would have rocked!!! Gee, I'd almost forgotten the Dynamics!

  • saw them in brissy live many years ago was great then and still are

  • @auspete says in the description

"Mental As Anything is something of a phenomenon in Australia, having recorded and performed for over twenty years (1977-2000) without a single lineup change"

Very well put mate! Well done

They have never needed to change - very special. Brilliant band that was around through a brilliant era of Australian Music and Life.

We were so lucky to be flooded with great bands back then.

Shame we cant go back, I'd stay there if I could.

    Thanks for posting

  • they were great saturday night at Riverstone.I will for sure see them again

  • se Mentals live in Vietnam on my channel

  • thanks for sharing mission507.....great song and video !!

  • Nice Share ! Great Post ! Thankyou....Anita..

  • Pity Abba cant get back together.

  • ABBA could theoretically get back together, but they won't and they shouldn't.

  • a song about the swedes? you dont hear much of that. but i enjoyed it, especially being fresh off the boat from Sweden.

  • Saw them Christmas 2009 South Maroubra. Some of the boys are locals. Sounded so good I had forgotten they were part of the sound track to the magic moments in my life. My kids were bopping out the magic returned, some things are timeless.

  • No, I'm sorry this song is about pooing on the beach - If you grew up with "Monumental as Anything" you'll know exactly what I mean... I'm guessing i'm gonna get banned...

  • you dont need banned biskits99 but you are wrong

it is about the abba breakup and i do remember reg doing the "sausage" bit on the video

    good times

  • this song is about ABBA :)

  • just saw the "beach-and-suburbia" video for this brilliant song on rage. brilliant lyrics, matching music. classic mentals

  • how good is this! best country, best life, best people- love it!

  • @MrBondibill Couldn't have put it better myself. Peace.

  • Martin Plaza looks so hot in this clip :)))

  • !*****!

  • Thanks for the share Gary - Great Stuff !!!

  • Songs from the long hot summers of my youth. Love it!

  • ... 'Armour-plated garments are her sphere' ... great, quirky reference to sequins. Very cool

  • Probably the most underrated band ever.

  • im going 2 c them play 2nite in geelong, this song is worth the entry fee alone

  • How were they?

  • i fcked up the times, it was an afternoon gig & by the time i found out it was 2 late. i saw them late last year in st.kilda & they were great. Theyre doin shows with the b-52s & the proclaimers in november, which should be interesting

  • A song about Abba...& like that guitar.

  • 5 Biggies !

  • Intesting sound..never heard this before.. Thx.

  • Great Song & Video!!! 5*s

  • Great song about the pop group Abba....5 ***** stars

  • well I live in Norway and here it's bloody annoying how it takes ages for me to get to the bus stop because I have to struggle my way past all the fighting and playing vikings

  • Well gosh could you imagine how hard it would be if you were Swedish???

Im glad us Aussies only have to battle kangaroos....

  • grew up on this music but i appreciate it much more now. top group.

  • Those vikings love to fight and play!!

  • I really miss The Mentals! Thanks a lot for this posting. Memories came streaming back - all good! Great tune and brilliant band!

  • semplicemente fantastici...l'Italia ama i mental!

    (simply fantastic...Italy loves mental!)

  • "adamtim" at hotm -- friendly muscle

  • One of my all time favourites. Not usually a mental fan.

  • Had to have this Aussie love song in my favourites. Thanks auspete.

  • Thanks for posting this piece of Aussie rock history. One of my all time fav's. Long live the Mentals, Hoodoo Gurus, Icehouse, Divinyls, Mondo Rock, etc.... 80's Aussie music.

  • Hear the horns blow...Viking Love show......

  • I always liked the shivery intro and the laconic vocals. Plus that Charlie Watts backbeat and the sparse bass. What laid-back rock is all about ...

Those Vikings love to fight and play!

  • I've met Pete O'Doherty and Reg Mombassa a few times. Great guys.

  • Yes agree, that's my favourite part of the song too - just when you thought it couldn't get any better they save the chorus till last!

  • Exactly. Classic song-writing skills. You don't hear much of that these days, do you? More's the pity...

  • My favorite Mentals song, if not my all time fave.. Bit funny cause now Im an expat living in Norway. Thank fucking Christ that its spring up here now, and that I can dose out on the best of Aussie culture up here on this stuff=D

  • My favourite Mentals song.

  • torquay a month ago!?keep us posted!

  • this is actuall a friggen sad song dammitall

  • Yeah, i picked up on it today that it was about ABBA because my dad said it and it all suddenly made sense

I picked up two copies of Cats And Dogs on vinyl, originals. an alright, slightly scratched version for $8 and one my uncle gave me today that is in gem mint condition, no scratches that he found for $1...

They are worth so much more

Definantly one of my fav bands

  • They played in Torquay last night. I walked past the venue and there was a very drunk girl hanging over the back fence handing a heavily autographed Mentals poster to a friend, and pointing out all the members and telling us (incorrectly) who they were and what they did in the band... LOL

  • Do you mean Torquay on the surf coast Aus?

  • Certainly do.

  • oh wow if i knew that i would of went as i'm on the bellarine, how can i find out there gig schedule if you know. thanks auspete

  • Well I bought a copy of Cats And Dogs on vinyl for $9.99 ... that was 25 years ago though ;)

  • was this song really about the break up of ABBA? I had no idea! Just thought it was quirky. They are still going are they not?

  • go and google the lyrics and make up your mind. There are a few ABBA related bits in it.

  • Just saw Pete and Reg do this on Rockwiz. Had forgoten about it. Damn great.

  • Man, is this one of my favorite songs ever! The groove is just so damned relaxed, the lyrics tell a fun but weird story (about ABBA? really?), and THAT GUITAR INTRO gives me the shivers.

Those Vikings love to fight and play!

  • Their kookiness was a little too studied for me (and they weren't exactly great eye candy)although I admired their musicianship and songwriting ability. This is catchy. Had forgotten all about it.

  • Brilliant song about the breakup of Abba.

  • Martin Plaza was so cute.

  • So young and fresh...

  • This was supposed to be posted in response to the "Martin Plaza was so cute" comment.

  • love it, love it, love it, thats all i can say : )

  • this is a brilliant song. so glad it's on youtube. love homegrown music.

  • These guys were in Italy during the 80s on holidays and saw there was a battle of the bands on, so they entered it for fun and won.

  • Written by O'Doherty.

  • I can remember that this album got quite a workout...of course none of my friends had ever heard of them...one of the finest!

  • How sweet is this fucking song.Smoooooooooooooooth....

  • Brilliant!!!

  • SAW THEM IN WONTHAGGI STILL BRILLIANT

  • vikings shouldnt mix their work and play.

  • im 15 and these guys are one of my favourite bands. This was the firsr song of there's i heard

  • I wouldn't call this a particularly "fun" song as it is about a divorce, but definitely take your point. It seems very uncool these days to smile. Apparently you have to wear as little as possible, have all the right "moves" and preferably "tood" into the bargain... <yawn>

  • saw them at wonthaggi fri 24 3 07 great

  • thanks. i hadn't seen that one before. i'm one of mental as anything's biggest fans. remember when popular bands used to be fun?!

  • I'm pretty sure I only saw them once, it was in the early '80s at the Astor in St Kilda. I was only a passing fan but it was a really amazing gig. They performed over 20 songs but I knew every one of them either because they were hits or had radio play. They certainly were great times.

  • i used to see these guys down the commodore in sandringham years ago. and you know what they were fucking brilliant. mombassa on guitar ,greedy on the keys doherty on the bass and of course the plaza on vocals. this was my upbringing and life. fuuuucking great times.

  • Great band and song after all these years. They would be a great inclusion on the next Countdown Spectacular

  • this was on the album called 1982 with a bullet

  • abba - that's wrong

  • Woo Hoo!!!!

  • Watched this the other morning on RAGE. Still a decent song after all of this time.
