Holy cow!!!...over 1000 targets at once..the size of a tennis ball traveling at 2-3 times the speed of sound!!....is that true?, if it is this is one remarkable piece of kit!!
I have got my name down for one of these. Oh and I read the multiple target tracking system can take care of incoming objects at supersonic speeds as small as a tennis ball. Then again, if its an "actual" tennis ball, nothing to worry about...
its main weapon is the sea viper aa missile as it is an AA destroyer. it also has phalanx and a 4.5 inch polyvalent gun. it has the capabilitie for harpoon and has a merlin or lynx for sub attack. if it ever kicked off in the falklands the argentinians wouldnt get near it. the sea viper is designed to shoot both aircraft and missiles as is the phalanx and if there navy were to leave there ports to attack the subs would take care of them
Excellent ship ! One flaw if it ever goes over a sea mine that wasnot supposed to be there , THen it goes straight to the Bottom , espicailly with sea mines that carry a 2000lb warhead
I dont believe the sampson radar is better than the comming DBR (Dual Band Radar) from the US. Sampson consists of 2 back to back rotating aesa arrays, operating in the X band. Its a compromise with 2 antennas rather than 3 or 4 to keep the weight down and secure ships stability.
It reminds me of an anthropological video where opposing tribesmen flaunt their privates at each other....perhaps that's really where the military term originated; giving humans science was like giving an ape a shotgun.
It's main weapons are below the deck it can shoot down over 100 aircraft or missiles 200 miles away. It has anti ship and anti submarine weapons. It's stealthy so that it can shoot at enemy ships before they know it's there.
@FunnyVideoCollector No, it cannot. It cant shoot down more missiles and aircrafts than it has missiles..Im surprised it doesnt even has land attack capabillieties...just like the US navy Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer. Its better armed. The radars cant detect seaskimming missiles closer than 50 km due to the horizon...
There is a possibility of a larger Cruiser sized Type 45 at around 11,000 tonnes. It would be amazing if we got 6+ of these to replace the number of Type 45's that were cancelled.
There was talk about creating a larger, Cruiser sized version of the Type 45 (not called the Type 45!) for Land Attack! I think that this would be a good idea as we could have 6x Type 45 and 6x Land Attack variants.
There was talk of making a larger, cruiser sized Type 45 (not called that) designed for Land Attack. Personally I think that this would be great idea. 6 Type 45's and then a further 6 (Type '50'?) Land Attack variant.
No CIWS are visible on the ship, although specifications note 2 phalanx systems I cannot see them. Also, even if they are there they do not look sufficient even today, given operational usage of the super-sonic missiles (especially Russian Sunburns, Granit, Alpha, Jakhont and others). Likes of combined rocket-light-canon CIWS systems (e.g. RAM missiles paired with 30 Gatling or 35 mm fast-shooting gun) is a must in the 21 century marine warfare. Anti-torpedo system is also becoming
@KanchoKomancho Interesting point. In light of renewed sabre rattling regarding the Falklands its interesting to think that our ships may be as susceptible to missiles as they were in 1982. I'm pretty sure we dont want to see the likes of HMS Sheffield happening again.
@KanchoKomancho Once again you see a ship whose weapons fit has been chopped down by the Treasury .
We saw this before , increase the number of hulls in the water because in an emergency we can always bolt the stuff on far faster than we can build extra ships .
Result ?
All those ships going off to the Falklands with 50cal and 7.62 MGs clamped on in unprotected open mounts .
The captains ought to refuse to take them to sea , as unoperational .
@KanchoKomancho The video is HMS Dauntless sea trials (the second in the class). I think the deal for Block 1B Phalanx took too long to get sorted and it was daft to fit the 1A only to take it off again shortly after the sea trials.
The missile system is designed for longer range anti-missile defence as well as long range anti-air.
It is a bit light on ASW power (4 Sting Rays on the helecopter), but it was designed for air defence of (amongst others) ASW frigates.
@mikefan09 x3 are in service (not on operations yet) and the other three are in various stages of 'fitting out.' The first Type 45 will go operational early next year (2012)
@thethreelions3 That's cause it's an anti air warfare destroyer..but dont worry we are gettin the new Type 26 wich carries Harpoon anti ship missiles so one will protect the other in combination
@thethreelions3 It's designed to protect a carrier , electronic countermeasures ect ect. Fairly sure that the carriers fighters would be taking care of the enemy ships.
Is that a USAF B1 Bomber lol??? Would be a shame if we had to shoot it down lol. :P

Very expensive platform for a 4.5 inch gun, because that's all the Navy can afford to put on it.Very clever people in Defence Procurement.

Who gives a damn about guns, carries enough missiles to totally wipe out south american air forces. ... battleships is for guns
booker90 1 month ago
@adelaide102 The 4.5 inch gun is very much a secondary armament behind the missiles and helicopter with a primary use of shore bombardment.
Naval battles are not fought with guns anymore, haven't been for more than 60 years.
