1:53 Good thing at least your fingers just touched the front side of the blades. It is the back side that is dangerous because that is where the leading edges of the blades are. The front side is the safe side because with the pitch of the blades facing forward and the leading edges in back, the blades would just simply bat your fingers out of the way.
@roybo1930 oops! TROJAN I MEANT!!! Mine is type no# 5110 - no# 515527. As for them being open You must have respect for these machines, They were made in a time when people knew that playing with one of these when on was dangerous, In fact G-E fans of this period had exposed wire terminals! I have 3 of these, 2 -12" and one 16" They are also AWESOME fans.
Why in the hell did they produce fans like this with such big openings in the grill? Obviously people are going to accidentally stick their fingers in there.
2 reasons: 1st and foremost was that the grille was there to protect the blades of the fan, not from idiots trying to stick their fingers into the blades to see what happens... 2nd was that in those days people had common sense which is totally lacking today, to NOT try and stick their fingers into the blades and that included children! OSHA has decreed that today the grille is to protect little fingers and hence the restrictive grilles that hamper airflow of today's fans. Simple as that.
@NathanH5 A- MEN! I can`t say to much I stuck my fingers into a 1906 EMERSON 16" one time. I`ll never do that again!!!! :( I was showing it to My friends , turning it around, with it on high , and 2 of my fingers went into the BACK of the fan. The front just slaps , But the back chops. SHEEEEEEEEESE! I still have the Emerson fan that I call CHOPPER! These are very ornate beautiful fans.
I'd be willing to bet that there would be a more pronounced change in speed if you ran that on a Variac. What is the design voltage on that, 104 or 110?

Very very nice fan! A few months ago I too got a finger in a metal bladed fan. Gave me a pretty good slice in my thumb.

This is now on my want list! I love that design.

Tis 104 volts at 7200 alts. Yes, a variac would make a better distance between speeds.
