  • I have made some video example of this tutorial, posted as video response.

  • Uuuuhhh....

    The video goes too slow...

A&D would have been better because of more accurate settings...

Dielectric material is kinda sorta legacy.

The IOR (index of refraction) was set to 1.5, and that's glass, water is 1.33

The light used should have been one of photometric lights, they have similar settings as this, but decay light properly with distance. Alternately, this light could have been manually set to be photometric.

But, what he doesnt have in rendering skills, he has in modelling!

  • If we want to create this effect in a achitectural environment, when we enable caustics does it will effect or apply to other objects too?? if so, will it create any unwanted effects??

  • And how on earth do you "apply and easy grey material to this"?

You just used a keyboard shortcut and I have no idea where to find that.

  • @sanosukke he pressed M to go to the material edit and clicked the button saying something like 'apply material to object'.

  • ??? i get an error when i do this. it says "There are no caustic photon emitters in the scene."

  • Physics Phenom is locked in my 3d max 2010 how do i unlock it? I accessed the shader file and removed all the "hidden" it gives me syntax error for the file at start of 3d max :(

  • My 3dmax 2011 says there is no caustic photon emitters in the scene, do you know what could I have done wrong?

  • what if i use vray?? do i use vray material and refract it? or is there a better option?

  • Right click the object with the polys you want to flip then go to object properties then turn on cull backface. it turns flipped polygons see-thru

  • i found out how to to do the flip faces , right click on the smooth + highlights and in the command menu goto xview then uvw flipped faces , then select all faces in the editable poly and then click flip in the editable polygons tab ,

  • Also how would I get the noise to move/wave? to make a moving caustics?

  • I'm having the same problem everyone else is with the flipping of the polygons, I've seen you do the same thing in your other videos but the same thing happens, the objects dont turn invisible they just turn black.

  • i have a problem.....I can't do the thing from 1:35.They don't turn invisible...they just flip

  • Hey Guy, I would like to know why when Im "flipping" the Mesh, it gets Dark / black and I can not look thorugh the walls as in your vid. And also I could not figure out , why the mr Area omni light is invisible, even if I checked "Show Icon in Renderer" (The Light appears but there is no shape of the Cylinder) . Would be realy cool to get sime advice of you ... I guess its just a checkbox somewhere ...

  • Looks like a lot of people feel that I went too fast. I might redo this one with a sharper technique and post it as a video reply...

  • Oh man, this was really usefull! Thanks.

    Ceep em coming.

  • Umm how did you flip the box inside out...been trying to figure this out for days now...

  • awesome tutorial man. Very well explained.

  • Thanx so much. I am learning 3d max. and people like you are REALLY helpful. It seems like everybody is trying to make a buck. It's nice to see that there are some people that are willing to hepl those of us that are novice

  • it goes a bit too fast, I didn't get which buttons you used but good tutorial!
