I conducted this piece's first three minutes or so, until it got to the softer part. Wished we could have played this as our closing piece for our marching show, such a magnificent piece...

My youth symphony played this last year in June 2010. I believe I just relived those memories by listening to this video. There's a recording of it up somewhere if you're interested.
@shiauZOOMer I will definitely try! :) We're only playing the 2nd and 4th movements, sadly. We don't really have time for the entire piece. :( I wish we could play it all!

Can't wait to play this at TN All-State Clinic in April :DDD I'm on Eb Clarinet :) Which means I get the super awesome solo in the 2nd movement. What a way to end my senior year :)
@iDaniel2011 can you PLEASE post a video of it when you can?? are you playing the whole piece? it seems like every All-State and MENC Division orchestra started playing this movement. in 2009, both the All-Eastern and All-Northwest Orchestra played it. And the year after that, Maryland, Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina followed suit.. =]
@SiMoN6873 I had to go back and find my comment because I couldn't remember what I'd said ... and now I've totally confused myself! I have no idea why I said the the tempo was fast as hell, because it's definitely slower than I like. I definitely agree with you. Maybe I thought I was commenting on the Bernstein recording. :S
@SiMoN6873 whats the fascination with speed? too fast too slow? It's all open to interpretation. Everytime i see people commenting that the orchestras plays it "too slow" or "too fast" i know it's a bunch of kids commenting.
Oh, so I can't voice an opinion on someone's performance? We all have our own tastes, our own 'interpretations'.
Also, concerning this piece in particular, the later recordings of Mravinsky, the conducter of the LPO who had collaborated and worked with Shostakovich had conducted the beginning much faster. So not only was my opinion justified, it is also supported by evidence.
I think it's YOU that needs to GROW UP. Because you don't sound very mature, 'iloveyourmommy'.
@SiMoN6873 what evidence are you talking about. we are not talking about a crime scene here. so what if it was played faster or slower before? how does it relate to this piece and this interpretation? Don't deny the fact that you made the mistake of always focusing on the speed of the piece. You sound just like any other 12 year old kid who says "oh this is too SLOW, xxx orchestra plays it way faster". Its stupid. You are stupid. Period.
So the word evidence only applies to a crime scene now? Why don't you learn some English first.
The tempo of the version I spoke of matters I'm comparing this interpretation to the one of Mravinsky, which is related because he is widely accepted as one of the best Shostakovitch interpreters.
Also, the only reason I brought up the speed was because 'EclecticMuse4' had said it was fast, whereas compared to all the other performances, it would be somewhat slower.
Hence I overlooked all the other aspects of this performance because I was only responding to her comment, when you cut in and accused me of being a typical child that only cares about speed.
And what is wrong with me commenting on how slow a piece is? Am I not entitled to agree or disagree with an orchestra's interpretation? Of course I don't ignore all the other aspects, but considering how tempo plays in the role of a piece of music, it is still very important.
