@MrJurongwest The rotors are linked by a driveshaft in case of engine failure. It's another safety feature borrowed from the chinook design.
The crash at murano was caused by the rotor pitch control gears stripping out. Thus the rotor blades went to neutral while the other rotor was pushing air. That design was beefed up and those parts were given a higher maintence priority in the newer version.
@jjones5411 Are you kidding? Are you comparing a fighterplane with vertical takeoff capabilities and room for 1 pilot to a tiltwing who is meant for troop transport?
Now they just need to come up with a jet powered version... Something similar to the pelican drop-ships in halo. The Osprey is a great first step though; but I can't wait to see what the military comes out with in the next decade or so.
@micromanrsking man the javelin is a nato weapon and not a threat the pavelow was my dream aircraft when i was learning to fly but for long range troop transport and csar this is an amazing tool for the trade

the Pavelow was retired from the airfoce, and replaced by the Osprey. They are not meant to be attack aircraft, but for search and rescue as well as Spec.Ops.
The US Military is so exciting! What will we come up with next?! Whatever it is, it's certain to be better than anything the enemy has :) WE just kick ass hands down
Yeah, the Vertibird that first appeared in Fallout 2 (made in about 1997) was inspired by the Osprey, AFAIK, but the cockpit design is more in line with the Soviet Hind gunship helicopter.
Yeah bro, they got the idea from fallout 3 considering they have been working on them for 20 years now and Fallout 3 has been around for that long too.
Great aircraft. But I was wondering if they ever gonna modify it a bit with some weaponry. Since there is a VTOL, has anyone come up with the idea for Valkryies (From Macross) or BattleMechs (From whatever, example, MechWarrior). Come to think of it. "Transformation"
gregrutz: When was the last time one crashed? Oh, thats right 2001, since then, they have made changes to the aircraft and to TTP's. It has deployed to Iraq several times and been all around the world. Do some research instead of jumping on the bandwagon.
That's funny, considering how America's main economy are from selling and manufacturing guns and armour (vehicles). They achieve this by starting wars, conquering places, etc... Improved weapons technology is not a waste of money, it will prove more profitable.
nope, it tilts it a little, flies forward, tilts more, flies faster forward, the faster it gets, the more the wings take over, and the more it can swing the rotors more, and done,
Not sure, but my guess would be debris. When these comes in for a landing they kick up a lot of dust and junk which can be murder on a jet engine, while a prop is no way near as vulnerable. Come to think of it, Prop planes tend to have a smaller heat signature for AA missiles to lock on to, which is something which is real usefull for this vehicle. Mind you, these are guesses
The rotors on a helicopter push down air to produce lift. the larger the rotors, the larger the lift (see the chinook, with it's oversized rotors).
Jets produce thrust by exhausting hot gasses after combustion.
So in order to get more lift, more fuel has to be burned to sustain hovering, thus they tend to have a low fuel efficiency. For a single seat aircraft (F-35) that's okay, but it's not (yet) feasible for transports, as the payload would be minimal and extra fuel has to be carried along.
because, the propellers work, and the jets would take alot more gas then the props, and therefore, you would have to sacrifice cargo capacity for fuel.
Even though i'm a civilian, i managed to see this aircraft first hand (due to Marine Week in Chicago). simply amazing aircraft, and, based on what the flight crew and other marines there said, they LOVE it. idk where people are getting the idea that it's retarted.
I heard that there's been quite a few deaths, mainly of troops jumpin out the back & being sucked into the rotor blades. They don't like it so I hear & who can blame them?
The military has tried to cancel this thing 12 times or so, but its one of those "pork" projects you hear about. They don't want it, but congress won't let them cancel it.
Dude where did you hear that? That is not only impossible, its retarded, Im gonna be flying it by the end of this year at New River, NC. If anything it would push people down--hence the term downwash, the prop-rotors push air down, not up.
60 minutes did a show about the problems with the Osprey. Can't recall anything about jumping out the back and all that but apparently, several people have died from malfunctioning ospreys.
quite a while ago now on a doc. I'll see if i can find it for you & post the title. Its not the sort of thing the govt wants a lot of publicity about whether its true or not. Atleast you're not jumpin out the back of it, have fun flyin it.
Hmm. A Black Hawk Unit cost $5.9 million, One Osprey costs $68 million.
Comparison; -Osprey
Max speed: 351 mph, 565 km/h
Cruise speed: 277 mph, 446 km/h
Combat radius: 430 mi, 690 km - Black Hawk
Speed Max; 222 mph, 357 km/h
Cruise speed: 173 mph, 278 km/h
Combat radius: 320 nmi, 592 km
Seems like a conventional Helicopter like the Black Hawk has a much better price. You can buy 12 Black Hawks for 1 Osprey. Even though it`s better in payload, speed and range, It`s not a good deal.
"we" are the taxpayers who fund these expensive projects when theres aircraft currently availabe that are proven safer and still get the job done. I like the osprey and what it brings, but its not needed right now.

Any Idea how many harriers and hornets have crashed during their development? Its normal for anything to crash during development. Lay off the CNN and read something.
psypholicious- BAE systems is developing a new turret that goes under the belly of the Osprey. Supposedly that will be the aircrafts defense in combat.
While being one of the most amazing and beautiful aircraft ever built, it will take a very long time to remove the fear factor from the pilots and troops sitting in the back.
I have a friend who has been in these, and I'm told it is a more horrific experience than being in the heat of battle. Every moment you worry about a crash, and remember the long history of deadly accidents caused a failed design.
I personally think they are almost there, but lets wait until the design is perfected.
No, they are still being used, I selected them out of primary flight school in Oct. It can drive both prop rotors with one engine. so the only reason to autorotate would be if both engines failed.
the osprey has no auto gyration. it cannot fly on one prop horizontally and will belly up on one prop on the vertical. As they say if it don't leak oil the marines don't want it.
it was designed to haul large amounts of cargo and troops with added range and VTOL capability but it can't drop soldiers onto a hostile territory because it lacks the maneuverability of a blackhawk which can evade RPGs and it has a gatling gun.
it can still drop troops behind hostile territory if needed. it can carry 24 combat loaded troops. it also has the capability of carrying 20,000 pounds internally and 15,000 on the external hooks. The CH-53E is still used as the Marine Corps main cargo transport chopper thanks to its 32,000 pound external lift capability.
Your talking about the osprey? It's specific mission, is to drop soldiers behind enemy lines - who whole point of it is that with the forwards flight characteristics it has a longer range than a blackhawk - its designed for the beyond-the-horizon capability of the US Marines. In verticle lift mode its just as manouverable, plus has the option of a 20mm chain gun in a chin mount - plus up to 3 door guns - M240, gatling, whatever... you don't know what your on about, do you?
amazing machine, but sorry for the army toys fan, the truth is: the v22 is an incredible expensive fiasco
75 000 000 $ each
1dangerous to fly:transition is hazardous even could be a suicide in a war situation.
2 pilots wanted a nose gun, it hasn't: so no way to back fire, just a useless 7,62 on the back door.
3 unreliable: was declared "operationally unsuitable" by pentagon, and breakdown rate is 2 times high than old ch 46.v22 already killed 30 peoples .the pilots all know this...
V-22 Osprey sucks ass. The hybrid plane/helo idea is good, but this plane is absolutely horrible. One of my best buds is an aircraft mechanic for the Marines and he has to fix these things on the regular because they go down almost daily. BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY.
The problem with jet engines is that they have too much thrust over too small an area. If a harrier or a JSF tried to take off from anything softer than concrete, the thrust would literally dig/burn a hole in the ground. Using jets would severely limit the places that the Osprey could land.
well, actually, the Osprey can burn a hole in asphalt, start grass fires, and break up already broken pieces of concrete as well. One of the senior pilots with VMMT-204 told me a few days ago.
i remember time turned this down. they said it was too heavy to carry a machine gun in front to lay down cover fire and the only defense it has is the machine gun in back and that requires to open the hatch. it was also turned down because the turn rate of the mechanism would create some turbulance. a hardware system faluire also caused it to either raise one foot or one yard off the ground and drop, snapping a wing off and costing a lot to repair

it was designed to haul large amounts of cargo and troops with added range and VTOL capability but it can't drop soldiers onto a hostile territory because it lacks the maneuverability of a blackhawk which can evade RPGs and it has a gatling gun.
bunnyhallow 3 years ago
it can still drop troops behind hostile territory if needed. it can carry 24 combat loaded troops. it also has the capability of carrying 20,000 pounds internally and 15,000 on the external hooks.

In verticle lift mode its just as manouverable, plus has the option of a 20mm chain gun in a chin mount - plus up to 3 door guns - M240, gatling, whatever... you don't know what your on about, do you?

can you land like a glider if your 2 engines die??
tks
nicholsonlai 3 years ago
what if one of the engines fails, can it land on one engine?
flashgrim 3 years ago
Yes, a few months ago in Iraq they demonstrated (inadvertently) a successful one-engine landing without any damage or injury.

I wonder if they could make one with turboprops. Would there be any advantage?
mesonofgib 3 years ago
it is. it has two turbine engines, one for each rotor
earpeffect 3 years ago
it is a turboprop
eternalfire1244 2 years ago
It can, but if both fail you're fucked.

amazing machine, but sorry for the army toys fan, the truth is: the v22 is an incredible expensive fiasco
75 000 000 $ each
1dangerous to fly:transition is hazardous even could be a suicide in a war situation.
2 pilots wanted a nose gun, it hasn't: so no way to back fire, just a useless 7,62 on the back door.
3 unreliable: was declared "operationally unsuitable" by pentagon, and breakdown rate is 2 times high than old ch 46.v22 already killed 30 peoples .the pilots all know this...

out of curiosity: how much does the standard helicopter of the marines cost that the v22 is seeking to replace?
ujbx 3 years ago
harriers is out of date..
VaanLeonis 3 years ago
Imagine if those rotors were replaced by jet engines . Crysis anyone :D ?

V-22 Osprey sucks ass. The hybrid plane/helo idea is good, but this plane is absolutely horrible. One of my best buds is an aircraft mechanic for the Marines and he has to fix these things on the regular because they go down almost daily. BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY.
tunakcil247 3 years ago
Most of the military's jets go down almost every day.
FCStaehle 3 years ago
Why don't they try making a VTOL with jet engines?
Can the Osprey do rescue hoists?
Antiworld23 3 years ago
The problem with jet engines is that they have too much thrust over too small an area. If a harrier or a JSF tried to take off from anything softer than concrete, the thrust would literally dig/burn a hole in the ground. Using jets would severely limit the places that the Osprey could land.
galaktar 3 years ago
well, actually, the Osprey can burn a hole in asphalt, start grass fires, and break up already broken pieces of concrete as well.
