This sounds really close to the Alesis Andromeda (or vice versa). With the prices people are talking about here, get an A6 and you'll have that sound without the giant hole in your bank account.
To get a CS80 sound on a CS60, simply add a symphonic chorus, since the best CS80 sounds are simply the same patch on its upper and lower layers slightly detuned. I had a CS80 which certainly had tune and span problems, my CS60 seems OK though and I quite like the Arturia software. Yamaha's AN1X does good CS80 noises too. See my book "Analog Synthesizers" on Amazon for more thoughts. Mark Jenkins dot co
There's a CS-80 on the Bay right now; it's going for $12,999. It's a lot of money, but apparently it's in very good condition and was recently serviced for reliability. The way I see it, a CS-80 is a gem among Synthesizers and I think it would be worth every last cent. The problem with the CS-80 is that unlike its younger brothers (50 - 60) it goes out of tune at the drop of a hat! I've heard that the 50 and 60 stay in tune fairly well, but the 80 is a monster. In the end, Arturia is all I need.
@noddyspuncture Hey, I'm not saying it's the best soft-synth (that place belongs to XILS Lab's "PolyKB") I'm just saying that it gets the job done.... for me.
@offthelinegt CS80 tuning issues are *overblown*... I have two of them... one upstairs and one down. They never get moved, and they only need tuning every few years, and that's just a tweak!
I believe Vintage synth explorer said he used a cs-60 also or was that a cs -40 he probably had a cs-60 in his arsenal oh well who cares like 1 out of 20 of us could afford any of those if we ever find one sucks they should rerelease both they would sell like crazy.
i cannot agree more, if its something Yamaha should do its to make a replica. If they do i hope they make the beauty as "portable" as the original was xP
I hope not I Was thinking making it more modern like digital controlled with analog oscillators or a virtual analog but they should have the components to make another line of cs-80s and it should cheaper.
Very nice. It is hard to compete with the CS-80, but there aren't a lot of those left are there? This one sounds fantastic. hard to hide real analog sound.
i know the lot who sold it- the tech is a great personal friend- and its not all down to them but more down to the clients. There's a problem now whereby the rich are shoring the prices up of analog gear - perhaps unwittingly- and this is reminiscent of the 70's when only multi- million artists were snapping up gear. For example hans zimmer has 3 roland system 700's...thats over 60000 pounds worth of modular. system 700's were about 10 to 12000 a year ago.
great demo, but the cs80 overshadows it so much in every department. This is reflected in the second hand prices. I know that VERY RECENTLY, one went fully restored and KSR'D for 15000 pounds. I almost puked in shock.
I bet most of the CS-50's & 60's are being gutted to keep CS-80's alive. I thought the one on eBay for $15K USD was insane, $15K quid is just plain stupid!
tis true, somebody commented on my cs50 that all cs-60's and cs-50's are good for is to keep the cs-80's alive. I'm going to try to keep mine from that fate
You could say that, but you could also say the CS50 and 60 are the best kept secrets, because they are exactly one half of a CS80.
A single-voice version for a fraction of the price.
So you double track a CS60, or you run it through a chorus/delay - as Vangellis did with the 80 anyway - and you can get *exactly* the same sound.
A lot of the time with the 80, you'd only be using the 2nd voice to thicken up the 1st. Slightly detuned. You can easily do Bladerunner on a 60 w/ a decent fx unit.
It would sound much much better if the player warmed it up before shooting this video.

Did they use this synth on Jacksons' Billie Jean for the "chords?" I heard they did.....I guess there are other synths with similar sounds.

I think it was $6000 brand new back in 1978

@TheSYNTHOID Arturia is all you need if you're going to play presets; if you need something that "behaves" like a CS, you'll need a CS ;-)

So, did the other CS models have the same tuning issues the CS80 was famous for?

is Vangelis brass sound possible on the CS-60?
WakemanFan90 2 years ago
Nope, he used cs-80
TommiT72 2 years ago
lol who doesnt knows that he uses an 80.....
i asked if it was possible to make the same sound out of a 60... and it is if you multitrack it, i just didnt know that when i asked
WakemanFan90 2 years ago
you need 2 oscillators for that sound, a cs70 would be better
