Is that a collapsible mesh feeder on the left? What type of seed is in it?

Yes. It's called a "no no" feeder meaning no wood and no plastic. I tried different seeds but safflower has worked out great.

Do house finches feed on sock feeders? I am thinking about getting a sock feeder.

No they don't. The house finches feed on the tube feeders, platform feeders and "no no" feeders like you see above. I even have them eating out of the flowerpots that are below the tube feeder.
