Considering this is a high school production, you guys have done really great!

Of course west side story should be done by high schools - it's a fantastic musical and teaches a really important lesson - why shouldn't it be explored by schools??

Good job guys n keep performing!!! Think people on here need to remember that this isn't the west end (or broadway lol) but it's a school who rehearse a hell of a lot less!!!

geez people...so critical... I mean it's a HIGHSCHOOL performance, not broadway. I personally thought the dancing was better then alot of highschools do, they actually moved! alot of non-art schools tone it down to a point where what the actors are doing cant even be considered dancing, just walking. There were mistakes, but it definatly wasn't this awful terrible abomination like people are making it sound, be proud ^.^! My schools doing this, I want to be Maria, but I'm not much of a dancer

I wish you luck with your own school's production, and lucky for you, if you really want to be Maria, she actually doesn't dance very much, it's Anita who really has to dance. Break a leg.

I agree.... the only thing i didn;t like though, was that the girl who was anita, the one who is supposed to stand out, looked like she didn't even care. I don't know, you don't have to be an amazing dancer to look like you're at least having fun.

really because this is the REAL west Side STory, you know the one on Broadway. Not everyone half asses it and does the movie version. so dont be ignorant. i think they did a great job

really? cause pretty sure im currently IN west side story and i happen to have the script .. the boys are msot certainly NOT in america .. this is a prtrayal of the MOVIE .. the REAL west side story includes strictly shark girls in this number .. i would know .. i play anita

Actually in the original WWS the boys were suppose to be in this number but they went out drinking the night before and were late for rehearsal and cut from the number. This is an all boy's school production so our director thought it would be best to include them in as many numbers as possible.

You'd think if it was an all boy's school production the director would have cast boys who could actually SING. The men sounded terrible. Just terrible. The women were pretty decent. Also, no High School should EVER do West Side Story if they can't do some decent choreography. It got better towards the end of this number, but it was really boring through most of it.

Also, it's a good thing Anita had a really good voice, cause she was a terrible dancer. The girl in the green was better.

That's unfortunate that you found the choreography boring. It's actually the original WSS America choreography and almost identical to what is currently being performed on Broadway.

I doubt that, since the original choreography was complicated and made for people who can actually dance, where as theese people can barely walk convincingly .

if that's the case, then it's just the non-existent skill of the dancers that's making it look boring.

So now we have a HS that did this even though no one in it could sing OR dance. Wow!

On a side note, I saw a clip from the current production yesterday, and it was a hell of a lot more interesting (and complicated) than this.

It's not that I hated it, it's just that High Schools should not be doing this, with the possible exception of performing arts High Schools. The original was good because they tried hard to find people who could sing, dance AND act. Most people in a normal High School can do one well, and maybe be mediocre at a second. Like this Anita, who can sing, but not dance. The choreography is not meant to be done by amateurs. As for the green...I meant the girl on the right at 5:13.

you know, i understand what you mean, but not every show can be performed by professionals, and how can you expect people to learn and grow if they aren't allowed to perform until they are triple threats?

It's not that. It's the fact that West Side Story was meant to be performed by tripl threats and wa specfically written for people who could at least do them all do some extent if not be fantastic at all 3. I'm not saying these people shouldn't perform EVER, it's just that West Side Story was meant to be performed by the BEST dancers and the BEST singers, and therefore I think it's inappropriate for a High School production unless it's an arts school.

There's a lot of plays with less complex dancing, or dancing period. Most other musical would be fine choices. Sondheim plays are often too hard for HS, for example, but most others aren't too bad. But something like Cats or West Side Story are kind of iffy choices...

You don't get to be a triple threat by doing a show that requires skills way beyond your level. You do it by practicing those skills on their own in plays that require less and build your way up.

Actually EKSgirl011 is right it was in dancespirit magezine.

Im sure alot of changes were made to the script during the first production before it was made available to the public. so ORIGINALLY the Shark men were suppose to be in the "America" number but since they arrived hungover and late to that dance rehearsal Jerome Robbins cut them PERMANENTLY from the script.

its not really the movie version because the the boys dont dance and they do not sing the movie lyrics. The only difference is that they sing Rosalia's part (for like half of the song)

even in that amount of time im sure you guys couldve have done better .. im sorry just not my cup of tea !!!! we did wss here in nz and trust me it was better than what you guys just did .. plus this isnt how its written the boys arent meant to be in it aggggggggggggggh wish people would stick to the script

thanks, i actually think the dancing is tight, although im a little biased, because we spent about five weeks learning it, oh well, no show is ever perfect. thanks!
