  • Every demo I see about this it always has the guy placing the arms high over the opponent. No demo has been shown how to get out of the same hold if the attacker is able to grab you lower where his arms cover the opponents wrist.

  • @1Blkkato the same thing aplies. drop your waist down and throw your arms up. that is if the attacker is grabing over your arms. if under then its another move.

  • I've never seen a bear hug applied around someones shoulders. Isn't the point of a bear hug to wrap up someones arms and ruin there center of gravity. I should start putting videos on here, at least they would be accurate.

  • For me the best strike for all the behind grabs as this one is quicly catch with your hands attackers hands and give him a back headbutt ... That will cause real pain and 80 % break his nose !!!

  • I have always seen these techniques as effective in the gym and not so good in the street as the other person is slightly more aggresive in the street. I have found western boxing strikes as the most effective. As in boxing you always train with someone trying to hit you for real as in other arts there is always someone playing patsy.

  • i agree conpleatly with ur way of escapeing a rear bear hug :) but in some situations the person with the need 2 defend themselfs from this move are either 2 weak are at 2 much of a disadvantage or lack the skills it takes to pull off such moves :) how would you escape from a full nelson? [without 2 much damage 2 your neck]

  • @thejessica1121 exactly! Full nelson the normal simple escape is to go limp and plop down on the ground like a 2 year old throwing a fit. But if they are way bigger than you like you suggest, yeah.. you are screwed :(

    You can also do a shoulder throw, toss your legs in the air and come down to build momentum to bend them over, but I have done that to big guys and they just hold me in the air and I just dangle helplessly.

  • @Subfightr thankyou :) that escape only rly works when the person is lacking in some way with the tecnique if the person is fully trained nd stronger with both escape attempts there isnt much of a way out i have been thrown a fair few times trying that nd i've already been trained. the full nelson is simply a pain. thankyou 4 helping :)

  • I had a guy who was 6'4" 350 lbs put me into a bear hug and I know I wouldn't had been able to move my arms out because he was too strong and too fat. The fat molded around me. What can you do if the guy is so strong that you can't get your arms free?

    if you allow me to answer:

    a specific answer is hard to give. altough the bearhug is about as straightfoward as they come. the escape isn't and is mostly determined by the positioning of your assailant his weight, height and strength. f.e.: if you can''t get your arms free you might still be able to head butt him by throwing your head back. this might provide enough distraction to be able to get your arms free. another thing you may be able to do is grab his testikels and twist.

    and there is more: if you can get hold of a finger, you can break it. you could also rake his shins or if the heels of your shoes are hard enough, break his foot. it all depends on the exact situation.

    1 the moves your using are kung fu against normal fools

    2 anywhere that says "chinese martial arts" tends to be a bit phony, because there are about a thousand chinese martial arts. i exadgerate a little, but if you dont go on to explain the origin of the move, or show other masters, then safe to say in my experience you know one or two pretty well or the basics of quite a few. just dont label them together because a lot of them have nothing in comon

  • First problem is, who grabs so high up the torso? I like the technique for sure, elblows and hammer fists etc are strong but instead of taking the guy down over the fron of the leg, try positioning behind and take him down backwards.

    I can lift someone up in a bear hug...............it must seem like a untouchable feat for you but most people I know can lift people up .

  • @pulsegang THAT'S what I was gonna say; usually someone bear hugs you and LIFTS you OFF the ground, and if it IS an attack, they will: lift you off the ground, swing you slightly and then slam you down OR instead of slamming you down, they could just keep you in bear hug, with your feet off the ground, swing you a little and then just fall down on top of you...probably breaking something...a rib(?)

  • i know these techniques. the way you do them is to respond right away and not wait for them to fully grasp. that is how they work. a martial artist responds immediately! not after. this is just to show the person learning. this guy is skilled. to say they dont work shows you are just another internet martial artist.

  • What bullshit this is, the attack is pathetic, no power or resistance, hes even wrapping too high on the arms... whats the point of hugging the shoulder? I would be more worried for a choke especially since he leads it that way with his defense.

    Just think about it, would the first thing he shows work if the guy was wrapping low (around the elbows or lower) and had power involved? Lift you up like a baby from there and then drop you.

  • This will not be sufficient. When you have gotten out he will put you in an even worse hold, a chokehold! The real attacker will not be so friendly and just let it happen. As soon as you have got his arm higer up he is going to start choking you.

  • What if the bear hug is done lower on the ribs at elbow level? ( your elbows get pinned up on your sides). Your way works most of the time but not always.

  • If the bear hug is lower, drop down as you push your elbows out, then you can choose to elbow as shown here, or pin the opponents arms against you and hip toss him over. I have tried this against someone much bigger than me and it worked quite well even as he tried to stop me from doing it. The trick is to drop and push the elbows out at the same time. Give that one a go and go at it full force.

  • actually, this works pretty well as long as you don't telegraph it. and the more force the attack puts into the hug, the longer it'll take him to recover.

  • problem, while hitting, they have one arm thats not being held by you, and your back is facing him...which isnt good.

    i'd prefer to spin once u have loosened the grip, then attack, in my oppinion

    you suck in all the breath you can expanding you chest/body then blow it all out really fast and at the same time you are doing that you let yourself fall to the ground and then elbow to the nuts. but only do that if the person is alone if you do that and he has friends kicks to the head on the street anything goes so ball kicks are really efitive

  • That has one huge flaw i always try that when my brothers bear hug me it doesnt work

    you breathe in , they feel it and tighten their grip shortening your breathe , so it basicly lowers your chance of surviving that attack

  • That's why I prefer Jukido Jujitsu. The technique you use for rear bear hug is itsukensetsu, where you basically spread your legs, grab their ankle, and sit back onto their knee. They're going down whether they want to or not.

  • That would work great if your opponent stands there with his free hand still wrapped around you the entire time until you decide to release it for that throw. Realistically if someone grabbed you from behind, and you immediately broke out of it, they aren't going to stand there and wait for you to counter. That elbow you throw is a bad idea, as its limited range would allow your opponent to easily sidestep it.

  • another method u can try is lift ur elbows up and using your strongest arm bend down and lift th knee an fall back the way on top and quickly turn over and put ur hand round his neck and squeeze wit ur finger and thumb just behind his adams apple and tell him stop struggling and it wont hurt. or try squeezing just under th jaw line next to th ears with ur thumb and 1st n 2nd finger..

  • basically wen ur in any situation u look to see what u CNA use i.e if u cant move ur arms...use ur legs and head lean forward with ur head and go straight back aim for nose, and wriggle as much as possible makes it harder for your opponent to make his next move
