  • Yes absolutely. The American military warranted first priority on ramp space for historical (many US interventions) and political (Monroe Doctrine) reasons.

But it also makes sense from a logistics standpoint. American military units are not masses of riflemen. They are combat elements fused with combat support/service support elements, which are trained and equipped to handle the distribution of massive amounts of material.

The USAF are the ones who got the airport running in the first place!

  • @Halo4Lyf

The runway was undamaged in the earthquake. Once a ground control team from the Air Forces 1st Special Operations Wing began landing aircraft on January 13, a team from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and Haitian authorities began working to restore navigation and communication capabilities. A team of U.S. military and civilian aviation experts working with Haitian officials began sorting flights, allowing some to land immediately, prioritizing receiving military personnel.

  • The ones contributing to the relief are assumed to take responsibility for distributing the aid they donate, as far as I understand and US is the major donor also conveniently located closer than other relief contributors-countries, it seems logical in the case of Haiti.

  • Labadee resort Haiti, Another cruise ship is due to arrive today as some observers wondered why the dock was not being given up to aid ships. The company said yesterday that US coastguards have assessed the jetty and decided it could not be used for cargo ships.

  • Why cant they dot boats and ships dropping anchor all around the island and then boating the items in ?

Obama better get this sorted.... if its not already too late...

  • Because the port at Port au Prince was destroyed. There is a US Navy Construction Battalion down there with 22nd MEU, but they can only work so fast. And the rest of the infrastructure in Haiti is terrible, the roads are junk, and the people are... energetically lawless, to put it politely.

  • sorry, i meant to say that they should drop anchor about a mile away from shore, and then send in smaller boats with supplies. I have seen this on other islands where boats dont dock at ports and they drop anchor about a mile out.

  • There's a US Army Transport Battalion (Heavy Boat) that's deploying down there as we speak to do just that.

  • it will be too late for many :-(

  • What do you mean by the "energetically lawless people"?

  • The statement "energetically lawless people" is an indication of the elitism of the commentator.

  • sussexking - The tour ships seem to have no problem birthing at the privatised resort where the Haitians aren't welcome. This exercise is a pure military takeover of a nation for the logistical reason of creating US bases between Cuba & Venezuela. Guarantee this and you will see an even greater buildup of US forces under the pretext of security.

  • the cruise liners docking in Haiti was extremely ill timed. sadly i know many who were on one particular cruise. Im sorry they should have diverted those cruise liners.

  • Doctors Without Borders: YOU ARE ANGELS! Those who try to prevent you from doing God's Work are MONSTERS, but YOU WILL PREVAIL AND THE ENTIRE WORLD WILL KNOW THAT YOU ARE THE FINEST DISASTER / MEDICAL RELIEF ORGANIZATION ON PLANET EARTH. I am posting your website link ALL OVER the Internet. God Bless You ♥

  • Yes why is the

    US doing this ?

    This should be a priority.

Seems the 10,000- military is more important then medical aid. Other aid agency's are pissed as well.

  • What??? Why are they doing this? This vlog isn't giving us a reason.

  • Doctors Without Borders Plane with Lifesaving Medical Supplies Diverted Again from Landing in Haiti, why is the US military refusing the landing of MSF supply planes & doctors.

  • Because the airport can only handle so much traffic in a given day. Port au Prince airport is a poorly built single runway concrete ramp that can handle 1 large body jet, 6 slim body jets, and about a dozen smaller aircraft at a time. Fuel is a huge issue too. The US Air Force has to prioritize what planes come in with these incredibly demanding constraints in mind.

  • halo4 - The US is completing a takover of Haiti with scant regard for the citizens welfare, the genocide perpetrated by the US is bordering on criminal and the condemnation of these actions wil be ringing for a long time, don't forget the New Orleans debacle with Fema, proves the US is a heartless, incompetent rabble.

  • Okay, it's official. I don't fucking care anymore. If we don't respond to a crisis, we're fucking crucified for being irresponsible. If we DO respond, our motives and methods are questioned.

I don't fucking care anymore. The world can get along without us. Ungrateful pukes. Let the mighty force projection abilities of Australia handle things.

  • Your statements only show your inherent hostility and elitism. How about stepping out of your own skin for a moment and into the skin of an earthquake victim. Stop crying "we're damned if we do, we're damned if we don't." No, you're damned if you do it incorrectly and thoughtlessly. Halo4Lyf: you are incredibly immature. And we are tired of this type of immaturity. I hope you are not part of the military in Haiti. God help us if you are.

  • I am tired of the complete lack of gratitude.

How long do you think those aid workers would last against the gangs without the Marines and Army airborne troopers providing security? Without those forces there, Haiti would dissolve into Somalia, force the aid workers to pull out just like in Somalia, and then how many Haitians would die?

Do you think that maybe the military has done this kind of thing before and MIGHT know what they're doing a little better than a substitute teacher?

  • @Halo4Lyf

You're such an elitist. No one should pay you any attention based on that fact alone. And what complete lack of gratitude are you talking about? I am completely grateful to people who do good in this world, such as Doctors Without Borders. For the most part, the US military destroys so much and works hard at maintaining unjust situations. I will never be grateful to destroyers and maintainers of corruption. And you will never be able to convince me and any sane person otherwise.

  • And, by the way, an earthquake hit Haiti. There is no civil war there.

  • And, as Doctors Without Borders will attest to, the Haitian people, despite suffering great losses in this earthquake, have been extremely helpful in helping each other and helping international relief workers.

  • I'm so glad you don't care anymore. The world doesn't need your type of help. Humanitarians from all over the world (including the US) can provide the help. Step out of the way, Halo4Lyf.

  • And learn the actual definition of the word genocide, you faux intellectual asshole.

  • Comment removed

  • You seem to exhibit a well-informed opinion,so I wonder whether you agree that prioritizing US military personnel air carriers over MSF urgent medical relief aid is reasonable. Presenting victims as lawless villains, who are to be feared must be convenient to the ones interested in establishing its military in the area, arguing that it is necessarry to protect the aid distributors.

  • Many seem to have the idea that the US wants Haiti as a base because we have designs against Venezuela. While I'd love to see Hugo's regime smashed by the US Military, we don't need Haiti to accomplish this. We have a much more stable ally in Colombia right next door to Venezuela. A base in Haiti makes no strategic or operational sense.

  • Halo4 - Typical skank retort to smash Chavez, the democartically elected leader, you really need to realise that the US is in dire shit and will probably need to be bailed out by the likes of Chavez who already has to subsidise heating oil for the entrenched poor in your pitiful country.

  • @arte6ka

It was not only unreasonable, it was insane and heartless. The limbs and lives lost because of this decision will always be remembered. I wish people would learn from their mistakes. Instead, they deny them. The majority of Haitians have been peaceful, patient and cooperative with each other.

  • @arte6ka I wonder how people on this site who are denying how wrong it was to prioritize the military would feel if their child was hit by a car, and the first people allowed on the scene were the police, securing the site, waiting for more police to come, delaying the paramedics for 30 minutes, while their child bled to death.

  • Yes, because police have no medical training whatsoever.

    None. At. All.
