It lasts about 1 year then goes yellow again unless you put on clear spray paint that has UV protection - I am told all clear has UV protectant- , or some 3M UV swabs at bodyshop paint stores but do the spray can clear , it's cheaper and does just as well I'm told :)
If you would like to get into your sealed headlight fixture it is possible. I did it on my GTI by removing the whole fixture and placing it in the oven at 220F for about 15min. This will then allow the Silicon to soften and then pry open with a medium wide stiff mud knife. It will come apart quite easily and after cleaning the inside of the glass then replace the Silicon with new stuff and put back.
Question: I intend to follow your instructions with the razorblade to clean up my headlights, however I don't have such a polishing machine. Is there any other way one could polish the headlights without the se of such a machine? Thanks.
Just a liquid RUBBING compound. In the video I say POLISHING compound but that was incorrect. It has to be liquid because the polisher dries it out too quick to be effective if it is a paste.
when you mean liquid rubbing compound, can you be more specific? not very familair w/ which to use. can you give the name of the compound you used or recommend? Thanks, would definitely try it.
Awesome now I just need a polisher. Nice vid though others take long or don't tell u where to get the materials needed. This one is easiest, fastest one.
Some after market headlights can be found that are fairly inexpensive. Such as the ones made from Tong Yang. Some are very high quality and, well, some are not. Look at Certifit at 602-278-4700 or AutoFit at 602-233-3300 for aftermarket pricing.
Yeah, I have tried that way also, it doesn't last long. If you want it to last, the yellow plastic has to come off. Besides, a person doesnt have to go out and find a specific cleaner or system to clean a headlight. Just simply any razor blade, any liquid rubbing compound.
The idea is to work smart not hard, by using a power polisher, and the rapid plastic removal of the razor blade. I have cleaned over fifty at a time and rubbing by hand is not the easiest way to do this. This is The fastest , easiest and least expensive way to clean a headlight, hands down.
I have never seen foggy-ness on the inside due to sun and sandblastdamage. It is usually because of a broken seal and water and calcium has gotten in. You can clean it but you have to take the healight out of the car and access the inside from the small openings for the bulbs. But if it has gone that far you might consider replacement if it is too bad and it becomes a hazard to drive.

What compound did you use?
I have done this with the 3M kit for about $15 and it makes a huge difference but falls short of making them new.
The one your video looks better.

I used Turtle wax. It is cheaper than the expensive bodyshop type and does the same job.

Wow! Your vid is by far the best! Thank you so much. Also, nice method of scraping the yellow gunk off. Others make it so hard.
Thanks again!

I does not matter. Just make sure you use Liguid rubbing compound of any brand. The paste dries too fast with the high speed polisher.
