But if you had the old style "slide the pieces yourself" you would not be able to scramble them to where that combination would occur. I can do this puzzle in 28 sec but every once and while is get a game that would never end and puss the hello out of me. The kids video was the first thing I saw and was laughing when he said it couldn't happen but then did the research. The kid is right.
for getting 4 when you have 123 you just slide the row below it to the right then your 23 to the left in the 12 spot then move 4 up to the 4 spot 23 back to their spots and then 1 up and you got the first row its much faster.. i solved this puzzle in 40secs on my itouch
There are many ways to solve it, not just this, solve 1,5,913 and continue, or solve 1,2,3,4 horizontal and then 5,9,13 and continue making smaller puzzles, and I end the last by solving 9,13 then 10,14 by making a smaller 2X4 puzzle in the main puzzle.
@tonymoralesadik It is impossible to have the whole puzzle solved except the 14 and 15 switched. Check the rest of the puzzle. Look up "15 puzzle solution singingbanana"

Then, rotations on the remaining numbers (10,11,12,14,15) are enough to finish it.
My best time yet was about 43 sec.
I think it's more than just being fast, it's knowing how to move things around quickly, and just having plain luck in getting the right numbers in the right spots.
your algorithm is not optimal. and the fact that the computer does it the same way doesn't prove that your algorithm is optimal. it just means the programmer of the solver was lazy or unaware of more optimal algorithms.
it should be obvious that your algorithm is suboptimal just due to the fact that you concentrate on one number at a time. an optimal algorithm would be concerned with all 15 tiles at once.
also, your explanation of 9-12 was quick and lazy.
You don't NEED to do the clockwise rotation on 15-13-14, you can still solve that one with a counterclockwise rotation if you're more comfortable, and vice versa. You can use either rotation for both 15-13-14 and 14-15-13.
I can solve the puzzle in 5.38 seconds with the iphone version. And no that is not a joke. I play it everyday and have pretty much every permutation memorized. Unfortunately my best times got deleted 2 days ago while i was at a swim meet and i have only been able to get back to 6.88 seconds. I took pictures of the best times list with my phone however before it was deleted. So if anyone wants proof i will email a screenshot.

well i was doing the puzzle the same time as i watched the video. sometimes i solve the puzzle without any problems and other times, there's just no way. i kept going back to the part of this video where he said the numbers that couldn't happen to check it with what i had on my itouch. and it was the same numbers. itouch also has 3x3 5x5 and 6x6. including this one 4x4 and i have had the same problems with each puzzle. i guess the update hasn't solved this problem.
@calebh220 If all the other numbers are solved and you get 13 15 14, it is impossible. If you don't believe me I can prove it. Singingbanana has a "15 puzzle problem" and he also has the solution saying it's impossible. Sam Loyd tried switching the 14 and 15 and NOBODY could figure it out. Give me a list of moves like "15 11 12" where you move 15 into the hole, then 11, then 12. So tell me HOW to get there and I'll believe you.

ugh, i hate this thing. i always take 5-7 minutes to do this. I can do the first two rows in under a minute, but that last part always kills me.
I need to get it under 2 minutes for a prize....(its a mini game for some other game, and i get a reward for doing so)
