Shredding is about technic. Jazz isn't. Pat's considered a guitar god for reasons that have nothing to do with technic. Rock guys should catch Ben Monder or Kurt Rosenwinkle live. Try seeing some cats who can play fast over more that one scale. As for Steve Vai, he's a great guitar player but can't play jazz at all. It's not his thing. But Vai knows that jazz players are a whole different animal.
Fenderbender 92 is an idiot! Shedders don't play chord changes just modes of one scale over tunes that are composed of maybe three major or minor chords. Being able to play a Eminor scale fast isn't what being an improviser is about. Yes, being able to play fast takes skill but can any of the guys he mentions play "Stella By Starlight" and be intresting? I have no idea why rock guys even watch jazz players videos. They have no idea or intrest. Why bother? Ever seen Ulf Wakenius?
I believe many heavy metal shredders have more skill. Not saying they're better musicians (though I prefer them), because quality of music is just a matter of taste (Dragonforce, for example, has a greater skill level than The Beatles, but it's pretty well universally agreed Dragonforce sucks, and The Beatles are gods). For sheer technical skill though, which is all you can definitively define guitarists by really, I give it to shredders. Yngwie Malmsteem=classical styled metal, check it out.
@NNATHEW18 More skill? You mean more speed. There are only a handful of shredders that are in a sense 'better'. Malmsteen is not one of them. Jason Becker on the other hand, or Shawn Lane, or Guthrie Govan. If you're going to mention shredders. Mention ones that actually go on par with Pat. Cause trust me, Pat can shred.
Splendid...

Check out those heavy strings! That's a baritone guitar probably with a nashville style tuning. Beautiful!
