@Rready555 I'm glad you disabled the ratings for this video. This song will forever outlast any youtube ratings attributed to it. Thanks for uploading it.
Good performance, but there isn't enough low brass; marches are supposed to have a very powerful bass line. I noticed that there were sections in the song in which the trumpets played the parts that should have been played by the trombones.
*is ready to start waving an American flag around* This should've totally been our National Anthem. It makes you want to jump up and act. I mean, no offense to Mr. Key, but the "Star Spangled Banner" sounds like a dirge.
I have to play this for a wind ensemble concert tomorrow and our conductor decided to give us this piece today. DX The other two flutes, sad to say, don't have a clue about what to do and I'm stressed enough playing this. The conductor told them to wing it and me to play. DDDX
Actually, this march was composed when Bagley was living in Keene, NH; the Gordon-Bissel Post #4 American Legion Band in Keene uses it as their signature tune (I know it very well, as I was with the band for several years).
@xL4dx7 Quite so!! I have listened to this march for more than 50 years and the four notes in a row make a fantastic change. When I was a child I used to go to auto races in Balboa Stadium in San Diego (1955). This march was always played before the main race as the cars circled around the track before the start. That repeated experience of hearing that has never left me. Great addition to Utube.
to my knowledge, that March, , or parts of it, are used at, U S Ceremonials, whenever our, National Colors, are moved about on a parade-field... Composer, Bagley, lived in, Keene, N H, for a time, and at the end of, picturesque, " Main Street ", there is a beautiful, Bandstand; most befitting a location maybe where his famous composition is still, frequently played, on a fine, Summer's Evening.... bdfd joe
I feel so sorry for you. What you just said just made a tear fall from my eye ;/ I hope your life will turn around and you will find somthing valuable to do with your time
you're a very shallow person if you think that music isn't important. I can tell that you need to make fun of others to make yourself feel good. Enjoy making 10,000 a year and marrying someone just as dumb and shallow as yourself.
I am a Vermont native and am very proud when I hear of wonderful things like this! I studied a lot of the life of John Philip Sousa, and for all these years I thought it was his piece. I'm glad to be wrong! Thank you for sharing this tidbit of American and Vermont History!
By the way find the version "Alte Kameraden Marsch" by the Berlin Philharmonic, Herbert von Karajan conducting.....you have to use the spelling "marsch" to find it.
If you like good marches find "Alte Kameraden" by Carl Teike. Yes I'm 100% American and proud of it but enjoy the piece I mentioned just as a good march. Carl Teike died in 1922 long before the little corporal became a factor so the march doesn't have the Nazi stench about it.
Does anyone remember the words? All I can remember is: "And the monkey rapped his tail around the flagpole and caught a bad cold in his a...... " was there any more?
Can anyone tell me who performed the version on "The Dirty Dozen". There is nothing to compare. It is conspicuously missing from the movie soundtrack and no mention is made of who performed it, or even of the march. The middle part was played with more pronounced drum paradiddles when the fake General was about to visit, and I believe another portion was played during troop transport.
i have to play this for jr. honors band and im terrible at the saxophone and we only have like 2 practices and the concert is on december 5th so this comment is basically saying that this is a hard song!
@Tobi324 Well, it depends on the arrangement. When I went to Boy's State we played a pretty easy arrangement. However, my high school plays a very, very tough arrangement of this march.
i play alto sax and this peice is SOOOOO EFFING HARD!!! the rhythms are easy but, technically the song is HARD!!!!!!

Which three flags are the most instantly recognizable? Great Britain, the USA and Israel. Now let the protests begin.

Wasn't this deemed by Sousa as one of the best marches that he "didn't write"?

When was the last good American march written...WW II?
RReady555 3 years ago
So true. Not sure why the march is such an underutilized form. Maybe people can't separate the music from the militarism and patriotism.
