Saw Bob in Chicago shortly after this show and asked him if there was any significance in the songs they played together (Hardly Getting Over It, Never Talking to You Again). He said they were the only songs Grant knew. Not really sure if he was joking or not.
Bob kind of comes off as an unreliable narrator in his accounts of Huskers' past. Age and (apparently) counseling have not done much to stunt his bitterness towards the other two fellows. We all do the best we can in life, and nothing THAT bad could have happened that Bob couldn't loosen up, laugh at life, and ACTUALLY make amends. He doesn't do it in his book, despite claiming so. Sad.
I can't favor one over the other so I can't pick sides. I'm sad that they are no longer friends (or maybe ever). Their combined work is undeniably wonderful. If anything, I would say that Grant's songs might have been a bit better but I really like Bob's voice.
I like them both, too bad they couldn't get over the difference's back in the mid 80's
I was at this concert for Karl (RIP) The picture is very misleading Grant was stage left VERY left, Bob was all the way to the right, you could have parked a 18 wheeler between them. Westerberg was amazing as always...Soul Asylum didn't play anything pre 1994 (still miss thier old scruffy stuff) What we really need is a Run Westy Run reunion...400 BAR...somebody make it happen
I could not disagree more strongly with those of you who prefer Bob's post-Husker work; I think Grant's stuff is more interesting in every way. I just love Intolerance, Nova Mob (their 2nd record), and Hot Wax.
Music aside, Grant seems to be the less bitchy of the two. On that NPR show Grant did a year or so ago, where he performed a beautiful version of "2541," he said that he wished Bob all the happiness that he (Bob) could get.
Both great songwriters - life is too short, who cares who has been the most successful solo artist? They are both still recording music and that matters more than all the other arguments. So touching that they got together to do this - new day rising.
Yeah Bob is not just talking trash about Grant in his biography. Bob just wants to move on and Grant wants to milk the HD cow some more. Bob has been more succesful after HD, both with Sugar and his solo recordings than Grant. And people like Dave Grohl state Bob as a major influence not Grant, that's gotta hurt.
Mould's discussion of this brief reunion in his memoir is misleading. He says that, upon coming on stage, Grant babbled something into the mic that Mould could not make out -- and that the audience could not make out either. This recording makes clear that what Grant said was perfectly intelligible (and I also agree with the anti-Bush sentiment he expressed).
@kylejj64 To Bob's credit, his descriptions of Grant and what it's like to work with him in the biography are fairly consistent, at times he gets a little bitchy but it's his book and it's far from just slagging him off plain like it could have been.
It's a shame that Grant will most likely be forgotten by most, but Bob will be remembered. Bob has clearly made better music: Copper Blue and Beaster might be worth the whole Huskers discography to me, but Grant has done some good stuff too.

Looks like they hadn't lost their sense of irony by choosing "Never Talking To You Again". ;)

I agree that that Bob does not merely put Grant down in his memoir.

I like Bob's solo stuff more but I gravitate towards Grant's songs with Husker Du.

@epsteinsmutha1 well the sound quality is pretty bad... you don't dig the fuzzed-out guitar?
grahamlaur 1 month ago
@grahamlaur they don't call em bootlegs cos the sound qualities great...if i had a better version i'd post it
matthewprokes 1 month ago
@grahamlaur The guitar doesn't enter into it. Grant can't carry a tune in a bucket and Bob seems to have forgotten the melody.

Just the right song for this couple, I fear...

Yeah the biography shows how poinant this show was. I doubt we'll see much of this in the future.
