These people have a powerful influence over the media, therefore when the promote a cause, it effectively reaches a large audience, and ultimately contributes to the cause in some way. Why is it that celebrities only want to get on the "bandwagon" once a disaster happens? It seems as if they only want to boost their popularity on the back of a tragedy. Most Americans had never heard of Burma before the past weekend. Well, I guess at least two actors will benefit off of thousands of deaths, nice silver lining.

I disagree. Sure maybe it promotes the actors comedians and singers, however it is an effective way to raise awareness. These people have a powerful influence over the media, therefore when the promote a cause, it effectively reaches a large audience, and ultimately contributes to the cause in some way. Even if it does promote the actors comedians and singers, then whatever, as long as it reaches the audience. Lets face it, any other random person, no one would necessarily listen to.

I respect your opinion, but I think you are wrong. The more important thing to do is help others, not try fighting our own wars. It's america's fault for the war in Iraq, what's happening there isn't their fault. How would you like to have to deal with the fear of everyone you love being tourtured and mutilated in front of your eyes? Sending money will help with getting those people out of there. It will help get them food clothing and shelter from horror. Try walking in their shoes.

I don't even know what they're expecting to happen. Yes, they raised awareness, but to what end? How do you remove someone from power who controls the allegiance of a whole army? Don't get me wrong, any human rights violation is a serious one. But comparing on a scale of importance based on first the threat to our lives and our way of life, burma is close to the bottom. The only advantage would be whatever mineral and resource rights we can get from the government we install. How do you think China is going to feel when we steal those? Yes, we'll feel good about saving helpless jungle villagers, but we wont feel so good when China tries to punish us. It's sad, but life.

Unfortunately, the middle east and possibly africa is going to take up our time and most importantly, energy and resources. True, it's a terrible situation, but it is more advantageous for us to concentrate on the mideast. If you want to keep living the lifestyle you have now, the one that's full of driving wherever you want and having enough plastic...not to mention the absence of fallout. A dictator who has access to nuclear weapons is a little more important than one who terrorizes villagers

Sad situation, but the only way to deal with people like that is force. The nonviolent way only works if it's advantageous for other countries. The whole point of nonviolence is to make the aggressor look bad in the global eye and justify the world applying pressure. The US has way too much on its plate right now to help burma. So, what about armed uprising? The CIA secretly funds the refugees and non-mil population. China then funds the military. A proxy war between the west and china.

U.S did not block France's attemp to raise Burma's case before the U.N Security Council to authorize a humanitarian rescue opration on May 08/2008. It was China that blocked. Beijing was trying to shield Burma's generals from pressure to let foreign relief worker into the country of Burma. Should I continue China's involvement in Burma?

The disagreement I have (I am a liberal, but can only speak for myself) is not with the act of deposing a dictator and freeing a people, but with a regime that lies to its citizens and targets a country not on human rights but based on a desire to create a pseudo-colony in the region to defend U.S. interests in the area. And I also do not particularly like the fact that the conditions in Iraq have Worsened since our occupation, infighting and poverty increasing.

Well, the british, finnish, italian, japanese, swedish, norwegian, and a lot of other participating countries medias are reporting that the situation boils down to 'it sucks, and is getting worse'. The American GWB funded media reports, based on american troops generals and american military press, that it's all sugar & pie; however they want to send 70.000 more soldiers there.

Disagree with the US or not . . . . it is extremely inhumane to allow your people to suffer after a major cyclone and not allow people in who want help and to save lives. There are 4 cargo planes and multiple ships with people and supplies to help and Burma / Myanmar and the Military gov't won't let them in.
